Either way would clear a list spot! Take the chance. We should delist a player with the promise to rerookie - but only a player who may have a taker. So Crouch would be perfect

I'm working from memory of what posters like Vader have said, but - is it the case that we actually have to delist a player such as Crouch to move them to the rookie list? We can just move the player from one list to the other, after the ND / before the RD?

If the Crows don’t pick up Caleb Poulter, then Port probably will (as a replacement for Amon?)

And another thing… Jimmy Bartel wants tactical subs next year…
I doubt Australia can produce them that quickly 😉.
Wait for the bench to be extended, and then for coaches to call for the medical sub again because it's unfair if a team is down a rotation...player WHS and all that.

#Bookmark - the sub will be back in 2025.

Didnt know this, shame on me. This is our grand final time too. :$

The trade period might’ve finished a couple of weeks ago, but the dealing and negotiations haven’t stopped.

All AFL clubs remain in trade mode as they can still swap picks and strike deals in the lead-up to – and during – the two-day national draft next month.

Since Monday October 17 – five days after the trade period deadline – clubs have been able to trade draft picks. If they want to complete any swaps prior to the draft, they’ll have until 5pm on Tuesday November 15.

Yes... we're operating under the assumption that the 2022 rules will be the same as they were in 2021 (which were different to 2020) - in the absence of any AFL announcements to the contrary.

i.e. Clubs will be able to move players from the senior list, to the rookie list, provided they are contracted for 2023.
I wonder if THIS foxsports article indicates the direct senior-to-rookie transfer path isn't available this year as it reports the following de-listings:

  • Nakia Cockatoo, Ryan Lester & Bris “committed” to reselecting both at RD
  • Cooper Murley & Coll pledged to reselect at RD
  • Dylan Williams & Port committed to reselecting at RD

(there are other de-listings as well where the club may consider reselecting at RD)

Now, if the commitments to re-rookie are genuine, those clubs could just transfer those players directly to the rookie list if the rule applied this year.

As explained by Reid .....we have a cupboard full of wingmen .....I agree, Poulter is surplus to requirements

AFL keeps going back to what's been tried & found wanting B4 ......Coach's were upset .....they're always upset !

Coach's need rules they can manipulate .....if any rule is black & white, they're not happy

The rule was very simple, till they got involved .......player substituted for concussion ONLY ....and then that's an automatic 12 day sit out of the game

But no ....that couldn't be manipualted .....so they added grey, by including substitution for injuries ......weak as **** AFL !

The AFL documentation is a bit confusing.

It seems to read like it's two actions - delisting, and then signing as a DFA just before the rookie draft.

WHEN you need to have the delisting done by seems a bit unclear, but maybe a bit more reading would find that?

Yes players can be moved between lists in between drafts. Like Keays was last year after the national draft. So Butts and Strachan are not on the senior list until after the main draft. We then move them to the senior list. If we use 3 picks in the draft we will have to demote two players to the rookie list so we can upgrade Strachan and Butts.

OK... so, as with everything the AFL does, it's murky.

One AFL media release says that there's a window for moving players from the senior list to the rookie list, between the ND and RD:
They will, however, be able to shift players on the senior list to the rookie list in the time between the national and rookie drafts if the player is contracted for 2022.
** Note this media release is from 2021, hence the reference to players being contracted for 2022. Presumably the same equivalent for the 2022 period would require them to be contracted for 2023.

Another AFL media release contains a timeline for events to occur, most notably on 29 November. On 29 November there's the second part of the ND, there's also a window for upgrading rookies, and another for DFAs.
Tuesday, November 29

  • Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period – selections only (5.45pm to 6.30pm)
  • 2022 NAB AFL National Draft Round Two until completion, including Father/Son, Academy and NGA Players bidding (7pm at Marvel Stadium)
  • Rookie Upgrade Period opens (10pm)
  • AFL Delisted Player Free Agency Period (3) commences (10pm)
  • Rookie Upgrade Period closes (11pm)
  • AFL Delisted Player Free Agency Period (3) closes (11pm)
Presumably that DFA window is the mechanism for moving players from the senior list to the rookie list. We know that Davis became a DFA when he was moved from the senior list to the rookie list in 2020, so it appears likely that this is how it happened. What is unclear though, is when the players need to be delisted from the senior list, in order to be selected as DFAs on the rookie list.

This is how we did the pick swap earlier this week, when we traded pick 26 into the 2023 draft.

Not necessarily. Don't forget that teams need to make a minimum 3x ND selections, which means they need to have 3x senior list vacancies. It may well be that they needed to delist these players in order to meet that minimum requirement.
