Forward line has too many reactive players, which has worked well with TabsSturt is getting closer to a game but he hasn’t quite elevated to the performances required or expected. His defensive pressure also needs to lift.
He is getting up the field a bit more which is a positive and as such his possession count is higher. He has been playing the last few weeks as a mobile CHF which isn’t really his go but been making a decent fist of it.
His body is allowing a bit continuity and his game fitness is improving each week. He now needs to work harder when the ball hits the ground and show more defensive pressure - tackling and pressure acts.
Watching Amiss earlier in the year he was playing a similar type of role to Sturt now. Whilst Amiss is slight in terms of weight he and Sturt along with Banfield and Logue would be viewed as medium and mobile talls.
I don’t see Amiss ending up that way but he will need a few pre-seasons to be able to size up as a key forward.
Treacy has the size already and plays a role similar to Tabs and Lobb. I’ve been impressed with Treacy’s ruck work at Peel. Treacy would have been the one I would have played last night as a replacement for Lobb at Marvel.
If Lobb is still no good for Melbourne at Optus - I would bring in Meek.
Jackson whilst currently different to Lobb would work quite well in tandem with Darcy.
Lobb whilst having a good year and in my opinion being a good trade in value for the club has been inconsistent across his contract with Freo.
At the end of last year so many posters happy to seem him go and really throwing him in as a bad trade for Freo.
If Jackson can be secured as a replacement for Lobb I can see that working out fine. It changes the dynamic of our forward line but let’s be honest whilst better this year it has still been dysfunctional in many games.
I agree with the post above that mentions mobile medium talls like Sturt, Amiss (whilst developing size), Banfield and Swingman Logue would work in well with Jackson. Tabs and Treacy the other power forward type.
and Lobb in form.
Banfield plays like a small forward, but is not proactive, same with Freddy.
A true medium tall can play tall and small, good in the air, mark.
Players average over a goal a game, Lobb, Tabs, Shultz, Freddy. Switta 10 gamesOur last good forwardline was when Harvey was coach. Our list management over the following 8 years totally neglected the forwardline.
Amazingly some couldn't see that and thought the issue was Hale and Jamie Graham would totally fix it. It's more about the personnel than the game plan or coaching.
It'll take time for the drafting of the last few years to pay dividends so we need to trade if we want a flag in the next couple of years.
11 goals.
One player Lobb reached 30 goals.
Then look at Cats, 3 players over 30 goals.
If you are under a goal a game average then you should be under pressure to keep
your spot.
