Sturt is getting closer to a game but he hasn’t quite elevated to the performances required or expected. His defensive pressure also needs to lift.

He is getting up the field a bit more which is a positive and as such his possession count is higher. He has been playing the last few weeks as a mobile CHF which isn’t really his go but been making a decent fist of it.

His body is allowing a bit continuity and his game fitness is improving each week. He now needs to work harder when the ball hits the ground and show more defensive pressure - tackling and pressure acts.

Watching Amiss earlier in the year he was playing a similar type of role to Sturt now. Whilst Amiss is slight in terms of weight he and Sturt along with Banfield and Logue would be viewed as medium and mobile talls.

I don’t see Amiss ending up that way but he will need a few pre-seasons to be able to size up as a key forward.

Treacy has the size already and plays a role similar to Tabs and Lobb. I’ve been impressed with Treacy’s ruck work at Peel. Treacy would have been the one I would have played last night as a replacement for Lobb at Marvel.

If Lobb is still no good for Melbourne at Optus - I would bring in Meek.

Jackson whilst currently different to Lobb would work quite well in tandem with Darcy.

Lobb whilst having a good year and in my opinion being a good trade in value for the club has been inconsistent across his contract with Freo.

At the end of last year so many posters happy to seem him go and really throwing him in as a bad trade for Freo.

If Jackson can be secured as a replacement for Lobb I can see that working out fine. It changes the dynamic of our forward line but let’s be honest whilst better this year it has still been dysfunctional in many games.

I agree with the post above that mentions mobile medium talls like Sturt, Amiss (whilst developing size), Banfield and Swingman Logue would work in well with Jackson. Tabs and Treacy the other power forward type.
Forward line has too many reactive players, which has worked well with Tabs
and Lobb in form.
Banfield plays like a small forward, but is not proactive, same with Freddy.
A true medium tall can play tall and small, good in the air, mark.
Our last good forwardline was when Harvey was coach. Our list management over the following 8 years totally neglected the forwardline.

Amazingly some couldn't see that and thought the issue was Hale and Jamie Graham would totally fix it. It's more about the personnel than the game plan or coaching.

It'll take time for the drafting of the last few years to pay dividends so we need to trade if we want a flag in the next couple of years.
Players average over a goal a game, Lobb, Tabs, Shultz, Freddy. Switta 10 games
11 goals.
One player Lobb reached 30 goals.
Then look at Cats, 3 players over 30 goals.
If you are under a goal a game average then you should be under pressure to keep
your spot.

This has been my biggest convern for this season. Young side are going to run out legs as the season wears on. I would say we should be trying to give 1 a rest each week and expose someone else but they may put our aspirations in jeopardy
Much better to have young legs going into finals rather than someone like the Cats who always run out of puff in the finals due to age. The key is limiting the injuries and we have a pretty good list availability currently.

Jackson absolutely helps last night- a few marks around the ground on transition, big mobile body causing chaos in stoppages, help for Darcy who honestly looked tired competing against 2 monsters... Logue could've stayed forward and pushed up to the wings and maybe a goal to boot

Mobile men like him turn games on their head- very hard to match up on. Yes he isn't setting the world on fire but he's 20 and has shown plenty of attributes that we are lacking.. I believe he could become a 1.5 goal per game forward at the least by the time he's 23.

Also Darcy is great but he's a big lump of a lad, he can't dominate against athletic jumping ruckman. Him and Jackson splitting ruck contests ~50/50 based on matchups would be elite for mine, then Jackson is a good option around the ground on transition

See kane Cornes and Nathan Jones on SEN talking about Jackson. Cornes the doubter

What was Lobb doing at 20?
Same with Zuhaar?
But they were getting games and developing.
Our kids are pretty good, coach has to believe in them though.
Jackson, Amiss, Treacy, Erasmus, the talent is not the problem.

I think it needs to be pointed out that Jackson’s mobility allows us to play an Amiss or Treacy alongside Taberner. It won’t be Taberner, Jackson & Banfield.

Hopefully it looks like;
Switta Tabs Frederick
Jackson Amiss/Treacy Schultz……………with a rotation off the bench.

Others may jump up as well & Lobb is having a very good year, but his previous years he’s averaged about a goal a game. Having 3 targets mean we are less predictable & are more dangerous when the ball hits the ground as Jackson, Amiss & Treacy are all far more mobile than Lobb or Tabs.

When Darcy goes forward one of Tabs or the other talls go off on rotation so we keep a mobile structure.

I like that idea. So essentially it would be out - Lobb and Banfield
In - Amiss and Jackson

I don't see an issue with coaches having a lack of faith in young players, in fact it's probably the opposite. Erasmus and Henry have been given plenty of opportunity so too Western and Treacy, Amiss 1 game. No issue. The issue is that none of them are ready to consistently play at a high standard at AFL level.

Henry looks like he’s turned a corner and imagine he stays in our best 22 for the rest of the year.

Erasmus will be a gun! Just needs to build his tank and put on some size and he’ll be a serious weapon for us. Same for Amiss

Western and Treacy are harder to gauge but I have faith that when they get they’re opportunities that they’ll take them

No arguments on most of that, the future looks bright but that wasn't the point I was making.

Treacy, Henry and Western I still have doubts on.

Henry is progressing and hopefully can continue to as he needs to get better. Last night was a positive step forward but still a way to go.

Treacy whilst young has had his opportunities to nail a spot down and hasn't been able to do it. If Amiss comes on like I think he will, Treacy will have to rely on Tabs being unavailable and will more than likely be in and out of the side.

Western has finally shown something at WAFL level this year but the question is how that converts to the next level. No guarantee.

What do people think of the following assessment?

Best 22 players who will play a minimum of 20 games next season:

Defence

Ryan Chapman Cox
Clark Young Walker

Midfield

Brashaw Darcy Serong
Brodie Aish

Forward

Freddy Schultz Logue
Jackson

You could make a case of Darcy missing that benchmark as well. What's clear to me is that we have 15 best 22 players that are available. The midfield will sort itself out as we currently have the talent for it. The forwardline is our most glaring deficiency. We don't have a KPF! If Freddy's development plateaus than we only have 3 best 22 forwards.

I think Switta and O’Driscoll could be included in this list assuming they stay healthy

We’ve actually got incredible depth! It’s a real luxury to have players in the WAFL that can come in and play a role for us

If we can get a top ten draft pick key tall that we can get for a fourth round pick we absolutely should be looking into that but I think Gold Coast might have been all used up for those deals now.

Aaron Francis. OOC and probably not part of Dons plans going forward.
Genuine swing man, former pick 6 and from Adelaide so should be able to get him out of Melbourne

Switta won't play 20 games tho based on his injury history and Noddy isn't an established b22 yet.

If Lobb is gone, then we will need Treacy playing, Logue to keep playing the swingman role when needed.
More versatility with the talls, Logue can play on tall or smalls. Treacy can pinch
hit in the ruck.
I don’t think we have an elite small forward at all.
Shultz is handy, Switta when fit, not many marking options.
So we need to play 3 talls, and create contests.
NOD on a wing is a must. Mids who can kick goals?

I only listed established best 22 players. Treacy will need to build consistency in the WAFL first before he can not only cement a spot at the top level, but take his game to the next level.

Always worth remembering Treacy is a rookie pick in his second season.

For the stage in his career that he's at, he's shown more than enough to suggest he'll be really important for us over the next few seasons.

Here’s a bottle of mouthwash, don’t ever ever mention Scache and Freo in the same sentence.

Damn right. Simply cannot believe people are mentioning Josh Schache as an option for freo. Have they lost their minds?? The guy is absolutely friggin useless and will be delisted by the dogs the minute that contract is up.

With significant mental health issues isn't he?

I think he had a patch a few years ago but has been available the last few seasons.
As discussed there just isn’t many options, so maybe need to take a punt on someone. Least it’s not going to cost a lot

Each to their own but I don't understand the references to where a player has been picked in the draft. Once they're on the list and playing I judge them simply as an AFL listed player.
