Yes I can respect that call. Not the worst measuring stick I've heard on this one.
So Dawson was traded for a Future 1st Rounder that was tied to Melbourne... so effectively 14-20 in the next draft.

As the ladder stands today, Crows have 4, 22, 40, and a 4th Rounder (58?)
The Suns are going to be something like 7th, 25, 26, early 30, 2 picks in 40s and more picks after that.

It'd be nice to get Rankine for Pick 22 and keep Pick 4 for Phillipou but I just don't see the Suns letting him go for Pick 22 when they've got a raft of picks in that range already.

Ideally... give the Suns pick 40 for Rankine and Swap 1st Rd picks with them as well. Phillipou slides to 7th in the Draft so we still get him. And there's still pick 22 and 58 to play with. If we've got Rankine & Phillipou then I think we should use 2 later picks to get some young SA tall timber in Harry Barnett or Isaac Keeler. Keep them playing SANFL and let them develop.
I don't think we have a 3rd rounder this year as of right now? Think we traded it away last year

Okay, so if you assume we come 14th, and GC come 11th (I think we'll finish above Hawthorn, but below Essendon) - that puts something like this on the table (inc. Amon and McStay compo at end of 1st round):

Rankine + 8
for
5 + 25 + future 3rd

If we're giving up our own first, that's the maximum I'd go. Picks will obviously blow out to 6 and 9 with Ashcroft bid
Are GC in the market for more Draft Pick Qty ? .......doubt it, particularly if they get a "Priority Pick"

If we want Phillipou / Hewett .....offer our 2023 1st round, and get a 2nd round back .....or this year Crouch pick & next years 1st

We'll need #25 for Michallanney

dreaming.

if Rankine does ask to come to us this year. its costing us our first.. with little or no change coming back..

i’d be hoping that, given they already have a heap of good 2022 picks and not enough list spots to use them, they might ask for our 2023 1st..

i could get well onboard that.. keep this years first and give suns our 2023 first in any trade..

rankine, phillipou and max m..

maybe lets just see if rankine seeks a trade first and second, if he does, that its us he picks..

but you can almost be certain that their starting point will be our first this year and our first next year… they wont get that of course but they will come in high to start with. and you just know the vic flog media will egg it all on.. anything to make us overpay!

Man, I'd be wary of us having another very poor year next year, though. Could be giving up another top 4 pick

absolutely have to push to keep our 1st this year

you can't think like that though as if we can get say Phillipou now + Rankine now and bring in a very impressive Michalanney now, worry about next year then. If we are forgoing a top pick then, it means even with the new additions + another preseason under Burgess etc, we have really stagnated

I'd happily wager (if I bet) on this not happening ......surely you can see it's starting to come together, yes in patch's

But this team doesn't give in .....add another 4 Quality players next year .....I can't wait , just depends on our trading & drafting this year

Milera, Rachelle, Cook, Pedlar will be much better ....maybe Seedsman ....plus trade-ins

Yeah, fair play if we have belief we're gonna rise up the ladder. If you have that, this is the type of move you make

I just don't see it... yet

Gold Coast officials have long been confident of retaining Rankine after already re-signing fellow South Australian Jack Lukosius, as well as Ben King, Ben Ainsworth, Elijah Hollands and Mac Andrew.

The Suns are also expected to soon ink Lachie Weller on a four-year contract.

Rankine, who was drafted from SANFL club West Adelaide with the No.3 pick in the talent-laden 2018 class, is out of contract at season’s end but is not a free agent.

The Crows would likely need to part with their first-round draft selection, which is currently No.4 after their weekend win over Carlton, if they convince Rankine to leave, but that may be only the start of what was required.

His agent, Garry Winter, of W Sports and Media, was previously on Adelaide’s board, and it could be worth up to $800,000 per season for Rankine to become a Crow on a long-term deal.

Rankine’s three-goal performance against West Coast on Sunday was his seventh match with multiple majors in 2022, along with averaging 14 disposals and six score involvements.

He would be a significant upgrade on rebuilding Adelaide’s small forward corps and could form a deadly duo with last year’s first-round draftee Josh Rachele.

Pedlar, Cook, Seedsman and Milera (as much as I liked his performance on the weekend) are still big if's. Just gotta hope there's better development across the board next year than there has been this year (as good as the improvement of guys like Fog and Berry has been)

But yes, if you have confidence you're gonna make more of a push, this is the type of move you make. Then back that up by targeting a free agent next year (I still like Redman as a replacement for Smith)

Outside of Tex/Sloane, $800K would be our highest paid player. Screw that!

Imho... the hyoe draft of rankine and luko has been a bit of a letdown. No sa player has reached the hype of the draft. They are good players and might have played some good games and some are solid players but the hype has not been met. Imho... rankine for top 5 pick is overs. I mean I'm pretty sure rachele has shown more than rakine at this stage even though rankine has some nice highlights. I wouldn't mind paying him overs to get him over but would be annoyed if we overpaid draft stocks.

Rankine ranks 37th for ave goals per game this year
17 from his last 7 games averaging 2.42 moves him to 11th.
We got pick 12 for Charlie and Rankine is well ahead of Charlie in many areas before being traded, yet Rankine is younger
Get Rankine this year and if JHF doesnt leave this year throw the kitchen sink next year.
Surely Rankine and Rachele can roll through the midfield giving it polish along with moving Dawson to a wing.
He was pick 3 in a super draft, not going to be discounted that much.

I repeat my concern of Rankine being a money man and playing better in contract season but I would take the chance especially if JHF was a strong chance next year.

To say Hately, Dawson, Rankine, JHF SA boys returned to the crows is significant.

I'm adament part of the clubs problem is we leave players in the SANFL team for far too long and as a club we don't quite understand the concept of fast tracking development. We have been terrible at it for decades now, Walkers early career was riddled with this sort of crap.
We can afford to leave players for longer in the sanfl when we are in a premiership window... but when we are in rebuild mode, it's about fast tracking your top end talent as quickly as possible at AFL level.

LOL ....posters said the same about Betts $500K contract

With TPP increases the figure will be proportionally smaller than it initially looks .....Rankine is a future Champion of the game

EDIT
In the right Club ...not GC

If it's just pick 4 and nothing coming back then I would consider that a hard pass and $800K looks like $50-100K over so neither here or there.
You have to pay to lever a player out .....and ESS are in there pitching as well

If he were to leave, I'd be very, very, very confident it wouldn't just be one of our firsts for Rankine straight up. Especially given the uncontracted factor
