He will need to be delisted by Essendon and not retired, changing the method of exit from them. But that's entirely on them to do that and they gain nothing for it.
If they don't he nominates for the draft and nobody picks him up.
If they do delist him go straight to being eligible for the SPP and midseason drafts.
Then we leave a rookie spot open and he trains with us and can sign him before about March 9th.

Don't mind me folks - but seeing as that's off my chest, and that trade season is done and dusted, I'm heading off-boards for a while to write dirty jokes about non-purple-clad footy teams that are heavy on satire, sexual innuendo, bad taste, mad scientists, randy blondes, crazy-eyed miniature former ruckman and a seven-feet tall, barely functional, footy-playing cadaver (...and no I don't mean Lobb).

This is a good day for our club. I’m very happy with the list heading into 2023. Wasn’t much more we could have done.
Got rid of toxic elements in the club and brought in 3 guys that are genuinely enthusiastic about playing for freo. There’s a lot to be said for that.

Just at the conclusion of today's trade they had the Essendon list manager saying that they're still hopeful McDonald-Tipungwuti will choose to play for Essendon when he comes back.
Said that AMT indicated that he wanted to play AFL again, so Essendon are trying to convince him to play for them again before they have to make any decision about delisting him so that he can play for another club.
