We aren't obliged to trade him.
What did we give up for him?
Has his risk of being a washout gone up or down since we selected him.?
What did the cats get for uncontracted Kelly.
"We aren't obliged to trade him."
I know

"What did we give up for him?"
Pick 11

"Has his risk of being a washout gone up or down since we selected him.?"
Not sure what a washout is

"What did the cats get for uncontracted Kelly"
Kelly was an AA genuine mid. Not a great comparison
Not many players that leave after their first two years at a club hold their value unfortunately.

Then they don’t get him.
He‘s played a fair amount in his first year and we got him around that pick.
And he’s contracted.

Stuff it, if we give him up for less than he‘s worth (like we did with Cripps) we might as well shut the club down.
If we wait another year we may run the risk of losing him like we did Cripps

Being contracted means we may he able to get close to what we paid for him. Probably not more though unfortunately

Taranto is average. Clear as day if you watch Giants games.

He's not average, he's a messy kick but his numbers are huge and plays mostly forward these days. Probably too much like what we have heaps of though.

So does Wilkie or battle leave the side?
If we got another really decent tall defender then clearly it changes the mix completely.

Not sure if he fits the "bill" as a decent tall defender but if we picked up a Billy Frampton type then either Wilkie or Battle would be totally surplus to needs and would be tradeable.

I'd keep Wilkie because of his leadership qualities and I'm sure a few clubs would be interested in Battle.

I think our best bet would be a straight swap for Bergman. Both similar picks, both want to go home. We could probably ask for a 4th rounder or something on top as an extra due to Nas being less developed and so a higher ceiling.

Butler is safe because we have no-one else. He's the only one of his type, even Long plays less high pressure. I would be looking to find another small pressure forward though. Butler has stalled. That said the. way our forwards set up is almost asking to lose matches, so hard to judge the individuals.
I don't understand, yesterday you were telling me Butler was only as good as Lonie and his pressure was a myth.
Today he is high pressure and we have nobody else like him.
So does he pressure in the forward line or not?

All true but he might break out next year and be worth more. We may have a good year and he wants to stay.
He may fall in love with a Melbourne girl. A myriad things may happen.
Ball in Ports court if they want him.

Yep. I’ve written that before.
Better he goes now and we get another pick to start developing right away than wait till we’re another year down the road.
More risky to wait if he’s going to leave anyway.

At least when st kilda were rubbish in periods over the last 30 years they had stars that made it worthwhile to watch.

This team has no star factor, hasn’t had a player in that category for years.

Players burst on the scene and look good in their first year or two and then their careers just fizzle out at the saints , it’s a serious problem. If I was an 18 year older I’d want to avoid the saints like the plague and I love the club.

Honestly..... trade everyone.

All those things are possible but I'm not sure how likely.

Ball is in both of our courts. Either way we are taking a gamble if we choose not not to take a decent deal for him this year.

I don't mind people holding the view they want to hold onto him, as long as they aren't the same people coming back up in arms in 12 months if he leaves and we only get a 2nd rounder for him

What part of “we are St. Kilda” don’t you understand?

He will break a leg or do an acl.

He would be in the 1st couple picked every week for us

Disagree - King kicking 50 goals in his 3rd year screams star. Could easily be 70 with some goal kicking coaching. Every club in the comp would love to get their hands on him

Depends what you call a decent pick I suppose.
If they offered pick 20, would you take that?
If we got pick 27 next year its not much difference.

If they offered say pick 13 this year you would have to think about it.
Personally we need better than the pick 11 we paid for him after a year of development and contracted.

It’s a shame he was slightly more prominent this year because we’d certainly be holding the whip.
I don’t think we can afford losing a first round selection without one coming back our way, so if he wants out I dare say the club asks for either clubs 1st.

Did you actually read what I wrote? I just said I'd replace him but he's safe because we don't have anyone else listed. I'd replace him in a heartbeat but you can't just throw a mid into his role. I gave him an out though suggesting a shit structure might have caused his drop off.

I wouldn't take pick 20 on it's own for him but at the same time I'd he happy to trade him for something close to 11 if the rumours are true.

I wouldn't expect to get more than that.

I'd be happy to give something else up to push for Ports 8 but I can't see them giving that up on it's own.

As I've said before, I was never big on taking him in the first place though.

He'd certainly would be but he likely costs 2x firsts so you give up 2x Cam McKenzie types or even our potential future superstar like Bont or Max King.

You wrote his pressure was a myth but today he is our best pressure forward. You seem to post conflicting views from day to day depending on who you are trying to point score off.
And realistically who are you replacing him with?

Fix coaching and development.. lift standards..

Correct. 100%. The best summation of why NWM should NOT be traded.

As a club we should back ourselves in to keep him and for him to be a 200 game player. He was a first round draft pick and will be a very fine footballer.

Stuff the SA clubs who are pursuing him. He’s our player and we will keep him. Line in the sand. He should not be going anywhere.

I agree. Things may have changed, if we lost say Hill and Naz, there are two more potential frdp's. We might wanted to package them for a very high frdp.

For shits and giggles, say we got pick 5 for both. So we had 5 and 10.
Go for the two best mids in the draft,( real mids not Clark and Coff), and use the freed up sc to get DeGoey, and maybe Amon.

Still require a lockdown FB to free up Doogs.
Will be an interesting trade and draft period.
