Yuck, he's been B grade since he signed his massive contract and too similar to Marshall. I'd rather Lobb and I rate Lobb pretty low. Neither are exceptional at ruck/ tap work, both great as an extra mid type and good marking around the ground, neither are very good resting forward. To me a ruck/forward as a chop out would be much more beneficial. We could probably make do with Hayes for a year and don't need to panic buy. Campbell and Heath are emergency break glass options anyway.
I have already mentioned but I would look at Billy Frampton from the Crows. More mobile than Campbell and predominantly plays as a defender. But at 202cm he also could be used as a ruck option.

Doogie is in a very similar boat to Hill I think.

He's clearly got the attributes to be way better than he shows in our team.

He's got all the hallmarks of being able to be a gun CHB, yet because we haven't developed or traded in a gun FB to replace brown- we stick him in a situation where he's not well suited and tell him to do his best.

His natural style is way too attacking to ever be a decent fullback
howard for pick ~18 or whatever it was is always gonna look crap unless we put him higher up the ground so he can play his natural game.

We really need a marcus adams, tom barrass type to make howard for pick 18 look good.

Same with hill- if we didn't play this garbage 'just bang the ball forward long and fast' crap and instead played a posession game- the hill trade cost would look fine.
I’m all for another tall 200cm + lockdown defender. Push Howard to CHB and let him run and carry. He is one of the quickest in the club and CHB would be his to own.

Butler is another victim of our game style and Rattens inability to think outside the square. When he went back to the VFL Batchelor threw him onto the ball and he excelled. So what does Ratten do when returns to AFL let him rot in the forward pocket when our midfield look like they are running in 'quick sand'. Go figure?

Our list is a lot better than what we produced this year. Far too many players went backwards and it all points in one direction as far as Im concerned.
I don’t rate Butler, he is his own worst enemy. You watch him carefully and when the ball comes into a pack look what he does.
He takes off, runs goal side to make space on his opponent and be one out in the goal square. But, If the ball comes to ground he’s no where to be seen. His opponent cleans up and clears the ball. Happens pretty much all the time.

Long is our only decent HF. When the ball comes into a pack he is always front and centre. His last few goals I’ve the last few weeks have all come from being front and centre.

As far as I’m concerned we should of off loaded Butler this year.

Thank you. It's giving me the shits reafing page after page of people bagging the player for the role that he's being given. It may be the case that this review notes Ratten's stubborn insistence on using players in roles they're not suited for until they want out of the club over it.
Battle as a winger
Hill as a defender
Marshall as a forward
Membrey as a hit up HHF
King stationery in the square.

The longer you think about it the bigger the list gets.
Coffield in AA form in the 2nd half of 2020, used as a deep accountable defender ib 2021 and was crap.
Etc, etc, etc.
All for the sake of versatility.. rather than fix the root cause of the problem.. didn’t identify the midfield players to recruit, don’t have a game plan that stands up in modern football..

Always just taking the easy way out.. Battle is a undersized key back, he is the perfect full forward/lead up forward.. is a good shot for goal.. but Ratts plays him in the backline because we didn’t bother to recruit key back apart from James Frawley..

I was never a fan of the NWM selection. Not just because of the go home factor either.

It seems strange though that we would take him so high when we had good local kids there available at our pick and not go out of our way to give him a decent offer to keep him here.

If he's genuinely looking at going we should bite the bullet now though and at least try and get something close to what we paid for him.
With our playing style, a soft winger does not work.. We already have a failed winger in Hill, what does the club do? draft another soft winger to waste like hill. Sonie, Sinn, Hobbs all good options.

With all of this year's and next year's draft picks at our disposal, if we can get de Goey as a free agent and then make some smart drafting decisions, this upcoming period will be huge for us.

Would love to see de Goey and Jack Hayes in our forward line. Some attitude and physicality. And de Goey transforms our midfield almost immediately.

We miss de Goey and I feel we'll be in for another few middling seasons.
I also want to see us do what we can to draft Cam McKenzie and also trade in Bruhn.

That gives our engine room a good balance of senior players and kids.
Owens - Windhagen- McKenzie - Bruhn
Degoey - Steele - Crouch - Ross - Gresham

Could also add into the mix
Clark - Sincs
(Byrnes - Jones) if still around

Longy is our only maniac that makes the opposition hear footsteps.

Every decent side needs one.

If Port want NWM and hes already checked out, do it now. Why waste another year with him on the list, if you don’t want to be here, fk off. He’s contracted, pick 8 is a MUST. Take picks 8 and 9 to the draft and along with windy and Mitch build around them for success in 4 years when king is in him prime, no more short cuts
If we trade Nas to Port
We get
#7 Pick Swap (Depends where they finish)
#19 Amon compo pick
#56 4th rnd

They get
#9 Pick Swap
Nas WM (#11 based value)

Norf want Hill and need picks.
They get
Hill. (Full income) (#19 based value)
#19 (from trading Nas)
#27 2rd rnd

We get
#1st rnd
Tarryn Thomas

Using Norfs first rnd pick

1st pick Ashcroft F/S 3000pts
2nd pick Cam McKenzie 2500pts

Cam McKenzie is Academy Player
= 20% draft point discount

2500 - 20% discount = 500points
500points = pick #36

That would give us;
#1, #7, #36, #45, #56, #81.

That gives us 2 top 7 picks for gun mids
Plus Tarryn Thomas plus if we draft Degoey
We are looking pretty good.

We could then trade out players for additional draft pics.

We have the right to simply say no, so why shouldn't they pay overs?

No-one has the right to just walk up and grab any player they want and flick some garbage back to pay for it.
Well said.

We really should stand firm on this one. We don’t need the salary dump but if we get it and get something good (doesn’t have to be ridiculous we’re not asking for LDU, JHF or Larkey) then just say thanks but no thanks.

Just on Acres, I thought he was having a near-AA year? Serious question, if that were the case then why would Freo be willing to let him go?
Bobby Hill heading home to WA, Acres on the move…

Maybe another Colin Young double-payday special like the Brad Hill/picks+Acres deal 🤔

Couldn't give a flying rats @rse what Rooey say's he is a media person, respected him as a player & legend of the club but to continually pot shot the club doe's no good for supporter or membership morale & to come out & say don't get DeGooy because we can't handle please show some respect to the current staff at the club.

And by the way take Joey with you
He (Rooey) is almost always spot on in every assessment he makes of the saints.
So is Joey.
Del is much more calculated and reserved when he makes comment.

Can’t wait till Joey and Roo are back at the club, real saints people making decisions based on absolute investment and care.

Starts with Lenny and Del.
Next harvey
Then Roo and Montagna

Will be glorious

Not sure I would classify Taranto as average. He’s mentally checked out this year - and don’t forget he won their best & fairest in their GF year… with Lenny as their mids coach

(But he’s going to Richmond anyway, if Dusty leaves )
Taranto is average. Clear as day if you watch Giants games.

Anyone touched the idea of an trade exchange with North.

Hill and our second rounder for Jason Horne-Francis. I suppose we may have to pay some of his wage too. He only has 2 years contract left with us, so I don't see it as a major sticking point

if Hill is now open to trade and wants out, he's going to his old coach

JHF looks a ripper and we need to get something for Hill

You honestly think that Hill and a 2nd would get JHF. Holy Christ

Watching Brisbane play tonight I reckon they could really use someone like Billings on the half forward line.

They seem to lack a bit of polish delivering the ball to their leading forwards which he could provide.

Mind you, so do we, so what do I know.
Brisbane could use another player who makes them even more average? Yer if they are into that kinda stuff.

The AFL needs to address the problem of first round picks wanting to go home.
Early picks are huge investments for clubs, and how they pan out plays a significant role in the clubs successes.
These kids shouldn’t have the power they do in their first 3 years at the club.
North will lose JHF, we’ll lose Nasiah and there will be plenty of others who move on sooner than what they should, for less than they were drafted for.

Just on Acres, I thought he was having a near-AA year? Serious question, if that were the case then why would Freo be willing to let him go?

He's on big money and they need to clear space for Jackson. I guess they have someone else that they think can walk into his spot as well.

He looked like a high potential kid a few years ago but isn't getting games at a side that is rebuilding. You'd want to know why first.

Butler is safe because we have no-one else. He's the only one of his type, even Long plays less high pressure. I would be looking to find another small pressure forward though. Butler has stalled. That said the. way our forwards set up is almost asking to lose matches, so hard to judge the individuals.
