Lol people are putting too much thought into the beatson vs oliver chat. Clubs (particularly back then) love to get stuck into draftees to test how they react.

Fun fact, in a pre draft interview a club once insinuated Grundy was feminine and soft becuase he had long hair... Grundy replied something along the lines of " bit rich calling me soft when you work at the demons"

In the video I put up before, one of them said the Gold Coast asked players to read the form guide and call the last 400m of a race or tell a joke and said players were literally studying the form guide in the waiting room 😂

I don't really see what those sort of questions tell you about a player to be honest. I think these left of field questions designed to make someone nervous or uncomfortable were a bit of a fad, not only in the AFL but in normal job interviews too.

Wait, the consensus here seems to be that Logan is untouchable and you wouldn’t put him on the table if Oliver was available?

That is absolutely crazy and I hope our list management doesn’t share that view. The fact is, if Oliver was available, it would take a lot to get him and we aren’t just talking picks and Tom Papley (who wasn’t even good this year).

Another poster said they wouldn’t trade Logan for the #1 pick this year? Seriously?

Logan is a nice talent on a good development track but he’s not Buddy Franklin 2.0 and it’s far from certain he’s going to be anything in the league. I just don’t get the overrating of our young players. If they were that great, we’d be better than we are.

Then bemoan in gameday threads why we cant win a clearance lol.

100% Logan would be in the top 3-4 of absolute under no circumstances to be traded. I’d be putting Amartey up before Logan and we all rate Joel. Reid will be a star all things being considered. Logan is tracking the same way. Wouldn’t trade for anything.

For Beatson, players need to be able to handle criticism, however brutal it might be. Mental toughness. Also see how they respond to the criticism. The fact he interviewed him suggested that he probably recognised his talent and wanted to push him to get more out of himself.

At the Swans, and I’m sure other clubs, the players are expected to be brutally honest with each other as well as the coaches. Everyone is accountable.

I remember reading a piece, it might have been B Jack, who said an outsider looking in would almost see some interactions as bullying, but that’s the high performance environment.

that's a simplistic, short-sighted and ignorant comment
you expect young players to be match-winning stars from the off?
how many big forwards were superstars in their first season? two seasons?
as others have posted earlier, i definitely would not offer any of mcdonald, warner, gulden, blakey, mccartin and probably mclean ... if that means we don't get oliver, ok, i'll live with it ...
whatever oliver has been at his best, it's fair to say there's question marks on him right now, for whatever reasons
but be that as it may, i'd feel worse seeing mcdonald or any of those others starring in another team's colours in the future
they're ours and we'd be foolish to shop them around ... for oliver or the no1 pick in this draft

This one. from around 16min mark.

A bit earlier around 14:30 when he said he faked a hammy so he didn’t have to do most of the running tests.

Not mentally tough enough. Not fit enough. Reeks of lazy. Not sure what he is like now after multiple preseasons etc. Maybe his long contract has made him complacent. 7 years left. Melbourne maybe want to get off that.

Anyone want George Hewett back? :)
