Geez, if Oliver is a lazy player,I'd hate to see him when he's fit and motivated... particularly if we are up against him...

Maybe he just got lazy again this year when injured. Maybe he is crusing through his 7 year contract and doesn't give two shits. Premiership player. Has done it all. Teammates are annoying too. "Get off my back".

Read between the lines and this all seems like the beginning of a coordinated media campaign to prep the Melbourne faithful for the departure of a favourite son. Within 8 hours sources from within the club have gone from "no comment" to "required and contracted" to "available at the right price". No chance to be at the dees next year imo.

We need to swoop in at "free to a good home"

There must be some serious concerns about where his head is. It could be potentially a Dayne Beams back to Collingwood from Lions situation where a club gives up alot for a mentally shot champion. High risk imo......
Beatson won't entertain this clown despite his ability. You would be insane to take on a 7 year contract for a player that wanted to cry in his interview way back with Beatson prior to the draft. Sooky boy, entitled boy, elite talent, sooky boy. 7 years of what? Who would know where his head is at. 7 year roll of the dice on Mr Dicey.

that's a simplistic, short-sighted and ignorant comment
you expect young players to be match-winning stars from the off?
how many big forwards were superstars in their first season? two seasons?
as others have posted earlier, i definitely would not offer any of mcdonald, warner, gulden, blakey, mccartin and probably mclean ... if that means we don't get oliver, ok, i'll live with it ...
whatever oliver has been at his best, it's fair to say there's question marks on him right now, for whatever reasons
but be that as it may, i'd feel worse seeing mcdonald or any of those others starring in another team's colours in the future
they're ours and we'd be foolish to shop them around ... for oliver or the no1 pick in this draft
Fair enough, we all have our opinions. Calling what I said ignorant might be a bit much though.

I’m not saying I don’t rate Logan or think he’ll be good and I understand the trajectory of KPFs but we act on here like he’s a can’t miss superstar of the comp. He’s had some good moments here and there and he’s on the right track but I don’t see him as the sure thing some others do.

Of course I wouldn’t want to move him if there were other options but if it came down to his potential vs an actual top 3 mid in the comp at 26 years old (assuming he wanted to come here), I think it’s a pretty clear choice. You take Oliver 100 times out of 100. That’s putting aside off field things, just what would make us better on a football field.

Now I’m aware that’s probably not the equation but this is a hypothetical discussion thread.

To me Gulden is the only truly untouchable player we have. Warner, Blakey, McCartin all very valuable (I don’t agree McLean is in that conversation) but if the Dees said you can have Oliver for one of those players, I hope we’d do it. Others may disagree and that’s fine.

For Beatson, players need to be able to handle criticism, however brutal it might be. Mental toughness. Also see how they respond to the criticism. The fact he interviewed him suggested that he probably recognised his talent and wanted to push him to get more out of himself.

At the Swans, and I’m sure other clubs, the players are expected to be brutally honest with each other as well as the coaches. Everyone is accountable.

I remember reading a piece, it might have been B Jack, who said an outsider looking in would almost see some interactions as bullying, but that’s the high performance environment.
Umm ok but he's already shown he can perform at a standard way above high performance.
3 x AA, 4 x b & f, a flag and two x AFL.coaches award.
So clearly beatsons so called "test" had absolutely zero bearing on reality..
I'm sure plenty of people passed his "test" and never played a single AFL.game.
It's clearly horse shit.
People are all different and respond in different ways to different things.
A good club is able to get a wide variety of people and have them reach their personal peak performance.
Not decide on one type of person and only recruit that one personality type.

Forget his interview, look at what he has done since joining the AFL.

Some people just don't interview well and it has nothing to do with how good a player they would become.

People can actually grow up in 7 years. God knows 18 year old me was a complete nightmare.

You do your due diligence sure but they are way way worse players on a AFL list than Oliver.

You then back your club to turn his issues around.

I'd bite way before then. Articles are saying they want picks to trade eagles for pick one, they can take every draft pick that we own for the next 2 years as far as I'm concerned. We've got enough promising young kids at the moment. Cross the Rubicon, live off the rookie draft for a couple of years and let Oliver and Grundy lay waste to the midfields of our enemies.

Agreed. Getting Grundy and Oliver in this trade period immediately puts the Swans in flag contention in 2024. It would be that big.
