Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Hi knowledgeable peoples.

I thought you could only take in the number of picks to the draft table that you had vacancies on your list? Wasn't that brought in to stop the stockpiling of a heap of lowly picks to match a bid up high? So how's this all gonna work for these clubs swapping out a low pick for a bunch of seconds / thirds?

How many players do we think we will be drafting in 2023?

If we have 9 - 19 - 22 - 25 already, plus something for McAdam, could we be gunning for Pick 5 from Melbourne? Or with our F1, maybe higher?
Vader has given you some more info - but probably the most pressing thing is this.

Once the draft starts, you can trade one pick for multiple picks. You can't use those later picks to draft a player you don't have a list spot for, but you CAN use them for points.

So, due to a trade DURING the draft, you can hold more picks than you have list spots. But you can't ENTER the draft with that, and you only use them as a combination for points.

Left standing at the altar with a bunch of picks and not enough list spots to use them on because we extended a couple of crabs
Absolutely zero chance of that.

It's incredibly obvious how we can and will make list space.

Tom Doedee (pick 19)
Jackson Hately
Shane McAdam
Elliot Himmelberg
Fischer McAsey (replaced with rookie)
Will Hamill, Sholl etc (to rookie list)

Plus we carried the maximum number of rookies last year, and we don't have to do that (as salary cap room isn't an issue).

We have a fantastically strong draft hand, which is great. No reason for you to twist yourselves in knots to try and find a negative that doesn't exist.

I thought we were at 38/4/2 at the end of the drafts last year? Then 37/5/2 once McAsey retired and Keane came in

Who the fxxk is running the show there at the Suns?..

Seriously the most moronic mob of incompetent fools going around.

Why the hell would you be doing a trade like this so early?..

They couldve traded 4 at anytime between now and draft night..

Why rush to get it done straight away?.

They couldve sat on it.. made all the teams interested in pick 4 sweat on it and maybe even got more..

Just reeks of a club thats gets bullied by the vic teams into s**t..
I doubt they are going to do better than 3x 1st rounders by sitting it out.

Suns made out like bandits for once.

You might be right - it might have been 37/5. I was just doing that from memory, so I might be out.

My point was more that the rookie list gives us extra freedom.

At the moment, our only rookie commitments are Keane and Parnell, so we have a lot of freedom to move main list players across, or run a smaller rookie list.

Yep overall you’re right. If we put Hamill on the rookie list, that should give us the freedom to add 4 new senior list guys (inc. Burgess), plus one rookie (not including EH among the outs - I think he will stay, at this point)

That’s also not counting any new rookies we might get from SSP, too - who knows, we might rule Schoenberg out for the season

I’d be pretty surprised if we didn’t initially go with a maxed out senior list, and minimum rookies

Can't then do deals for picks 10 & 17 if you don't have them.

GC wanted to get it done before Dogs realised it was a dumb deal LOL
Exactly, now we trade in pick 10 & Burgess using our 2nds.

We wont get 10 with just some second rounders.

we’ll need to use our f1..

dees and north are also looking at getting pick 10 from the suns.. and they both will probably offer a first rounder (they have picks 13 and 14 respectively) then add a second rounder to it..

north will probably use some of their pp from next year to get it done.

I don't get the arguments that GCS have given up pick 4 for points and F1 and somehow that's under.

They use the points for a top 3 player instead of using pick 4.

They have traded pick four for essentially pick 3 and a F1.

That is very good business.

GC chasing points...

19 + 22 + 25 is equal in points to pick 2

19+ 22 is pick 6 in points.

GC wants points.
GC pretty much already have enough points to match all three of their academy guys as it stands though.

at this point they would be more keen to shift some more capital into next years strong draft..

take pick 14 and and one of the 2024 priority end of first round picks off north for pick 10..

then they could trade 14 to the crows or someone else for a couple of seconds if they still wanted to grab more points for this year..

thats what anyone with half a brain would do..
