Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

To play devils advocate, if Oliver requested a trade and Melbourne said no, it would be an interesting stress test for the industry. How many years would Oliver need to demand a trade before it happens. From my memory, the only best 22 player traded with more than 1 year left on their contract is Brad Hill and he had to get the bus rolling the year before. Lobb got told he was staying with his first request

Oliver is contracted til 2030

Clearly Billings would be better than Sharp! At least billings is an experienced serviceable AFL player.
We haven’t seen anything from Sharp at the highest level, he’s delist material as things stand right now only for freos interest.

Say we get pick 10 from GC, is there anyway we could package that up with some other bits pieces and target Macdonald? I have no idea what they could be but it’s a descent starting point.

Side note.
Was “working” on site today when Jye turned up and started busting out some sprint sessions before doing laps of the oval. He pulled up next to me eventually for a spell. Told him he was epic this year! Reached out and gave me a shake “ big winner energy” Asked if this was part of his OS program, he replied no, just wanna be ready, preseason comes around quickly, then took off for another lap

That’s my kinda keyforward 😍

Plenty of blokes excel at a new environment. Will Brodie, was a classic example last year.
Played more games than Sharp, but excelled in a new environ

Has he put on any weight?

If he has another injury-interrupted year I reckon Melbourne might be looking to off load him somewhere tbh. Guys who get serious hamstring injuries often find it hard to get back. In his position why would he want to leave? He has another 6 years on a huge contract.

AFL clubs are playing russian roulette with these long term contracts. Collingwood seemed to get the bullet first, could be Melbournes turn?

If we had to choose btwn 1 of Sharp and Billings, I'm probably taking Sharp. Younger and less injury prone are the obvious reasons, but that aside Sharp seems way closer to the type of player we need than Billings.

Sharp is the definition of a traditional winger: runs btwn both arcs, offers a run and carry threat and genuine pace that Billings doesn't quite have at the same level. Billings seems closer to like a wing/half-fwd who is good at getting himself in the right spots for goal scoring opportunities, but doesn't give you that same dash. That type of player is a bit difficult to fit in given we play 8 fwds and hopefully in the future we're considering playing some of our inside mids as mid-fwds (see that Liam Henry had to change his game from a more fwd-based winger to a winger that gets the ball from deep and elevates his running game to get in the team).

For what it's worth, not a whole lot in it btwn them re VFL stats this season: I don't see Billings as clearing Sharp as a player (tho that's partly because I really rate Sharp).

To me, Sharp is a better fit for what we need in a winger than Billings and we don't have to deal with the contract. Doesn't hurt that he's a WA kid either.

Where is this Billings talk coming from? He wants out sure, but would he come to WA?
I think people are interpreting Walls interview posted on the club site literally when he said something along the lines of wanting picks and / or a player in the Henry deal. Whereas I think it was more of a standard, throwaway, answer and in reality we are just after picks.

I don't think we'd be wanting to get involved in salary dumps at this stage, whatever tiny excess we have needs to be saved for resignings and trade targets 24/25.

Would you rather smart or fast?
I think it's team needs specific. Oleg Markov just won a premiership playing every game since round 4 (coincidentally, another Gold Coast reject). Clearly speed is important especially on the wings, and I don't think we have enough of it.
