It's LOBS lack of physicality that got him undone and caused the average disposal efficiency. So many on here were obsessed with him lol

The physicality part of it is the main thing. Acres, Cottrell, Docherty, Hollands they do chase and tackle pretty well, they go pretty hard at the contests and they find more of the footy.

O'Brien doesn't have that aspect to his game. The other thing the above do is drop back in defence and fill a hole and generally have an impact doing that. Generally can mark and spoil overhead fairly well which is not common in O'Brien's game.

You see it all the time. Average players in ordinary teams threatening to go the next level but never do, just play the average game then the team recruits and develops well and they are upgraded on.

We have had plenty of players in our team over the years who have gone from best 22 to being squeezed out to being a fair way from it.

If we get out list fully fit for finals we will have Docherty and Acres on the wings and that will be one of the stronger wing duos in the game. Get a lot of the ball, inside outside players who are great in the contest and great on the outside, drop back in defence well, kick goals, run and carry, chase and tackle, good overhead, good footy IQ. Not really any holes.

The other thing is we also have Binns in the reserves who he's playing along side and is out playing him every week.

I hope O'Brien finds a home and think he will, he's a mature expierenced AFL player with youth on his side. We should not undersell the spill over of our list, it's really good now, it wasn't that long ago we were really poor and chasing players like this spilling out of better lists.

Doc on the wing has really surprised me and although he has only spent a short amount of time out there I think he really hasn’t got the acknowledgment he has deserved this season.

It is a bit strange it has taken so long to get him on a wing. It has always looked a likely position for him. He is a ball “follower” though. Does not play as well structurally as Acres or even Hollands. Doc has always been a little loose as a defender, preferring to read the play and focus on the ball more than an opponent.

I love that we have options where he can play. I also suspect that a he approaches his “twilight”, he may struggle to hold down a permanent spot, positionally. He is by no means in danger of slipping out of the team, but development of other players in various roles likely means he ends his career as a Mr. Fixit.

I don't wanna be that guy, but....

....is it time to do a Jones with Big H?

We want another key defender who can take the big forwards, one who isn't a liability with field kicking, one who isn't too slow to go with the more agile talls. Do we have him at the other end with an incurable case of the yips in front of goal?

It's probably a bad idea, but I reckon you'd have to give it some consideration.

Newman, McKay, Kemp
Saad, Weitering, Gov
Acres, Cripps, Doc
TDK, Walsh, Cerra
Martin, JSOS, Cottrell
Motlop, Curnow, Owies
I/C: Williams, Hewett, Kennedy, Cuningham

Something like that? Gets JSOS in as the second ruck without making the forward line too top-heavy. Still have the option within games to swing Harry forward.

Love Harry...

However, I'd nearly rather trade him, now...
He's a big expense to our cap and is mentally cooked, can't even kick a goal from 10m out...

We'd get decent compensation and could target a cheaper option...

I'm not against it. We did function better without him after his injury
I'm torn...
The flying Harry of 2021-22, makes us so much better...

However, we are now spending a large portion of our already tight cap, on a player that is a shell of his former self...
Yips or not, he should be kicking goals from 10m out straight in front...

And one metre out running in

H needs to put the off season sprint sessions to the side and spend it with a goal kicking coach. His preparation for the shot on goal is all over the place, needs to lock in on a routine.

He’ll definitely be fine … his only issue is when you put him in front of goal he’s still doing everything else extremely well… it’s confidence
Yeah but the precedent case before him is Richo. Awesome footballer, did so many things exceptionally & his career avg goal kicking was pretty good.
That little bloke never left his shoulder thou - he carried him throughout his career & was always questionable when the heat was on - when he answered the question it was more often than not a negative.
Sports psych can only do so much & he’s already working hard with them.

Harry was back to his best in the first weeks of our winning streak, just prior to his knee injury. He's struggled again since coming back. Trust with a good off-season, he'll be firing next season. The question will be do we pick him again this year (should we make it past next week)? I would - perhaps just showing confidence in him will help.

Harry will be fine with a good off season. Amazing what a couple months off can do for some mental demons when you're having a bad year.

I still think we are 2 really high end transition players away from being a flag chance. A quality high half forward and another elite runner/kick off the half back line/wing imo. Something like Bailey Dale and Ben Ainsworth/Brad Close type acquisitions. Both probably out of our price range given we're heading to the draft but some players who do damage when the ball is in open play on turnover.

Collard, Schoenmaker, Windsor, Tholstrup, Philactides are a few in the draft who could help address those holes.
