Sam Edmund just said on SEN that LOB won't be at Carlton next year.

Not sure who would trade for him?

Yeah, after playing in 19 senior games last year and managing only six this year, he isn’t in the coaches plans. A bit of a shame as he seemed like he turned a corner last year.

Any chance we delist him and pay him out to free up a list space?
In hindsight, it seemed a bit of an odd decision to offer him 2 years....although it was at the time when Vossy and Cooky arrived, so no doubt were trying to establish some stability with the club and playing group.

I'll go in to bat for LOB though. At the start of preseason this year, he presented himself in tip top physical condition, and was smashing it in the repetition running drills. So if nothing else, he gave himself every chance to earn a spot in the 22. Even in the match sims, it appeared he was ready to take the next step - looked really good.

Unfortunately, that never translated to match day form, which only further justifies he's not at AFL standard.

Not sure that it's that strange to give a guy who's worked himself into your best team and played 19/22 games a 2 year (and low money) contract.

And when the contract was signed, we didn't have Hollands yet. And I doubt anyone could have expected him to do what he has 1st year?

LOB & Newnes played games in part due to an absence of alternatives rather than due to significant output fron either of them.
I assume the club was hedging their bets a little but offering 2-3 year contracts to peripheral players can be problematic, particularly as spots on the list are now harder to come by.

Player updates according to Sam Edmond

Sam Edmund’s trade and contract update on 18 AFL players

Interesting that info in LOB. He's contracted next year but I posted a few weeks back I think its in his best interest and the clubs best interest if we help him find a new home.

Certainly would be great to keep SOS and Dow. Clubs need a good top 30 players to really push for flags. Dow is now a required player.

Is Stephen Silvagni returning to his old tricks rolling into his new club and impressing everyone by poaching a couple of former first rounders from his old club?

I bet he didn’t tell the Saints he meant Lob and Stocker at the job interview!!!

Last year O'Brien was our number 1 winger. We never thought we would be so successful filling the spot. Now he is behind Acres, Docherty, Hollands, Cottrell and Binns. He's gone from being 1 to 6th. Not so much his form but from recruitment, players able to move to that position and from development.
He will have to look around for a club that can give him a game or he will be stuck on our list in our reserves side all season. Probably good enough to find a spot on a list at a club lacking wingers same way Newnes did with us.

Some creative accounting should see us balance the books, we also have Williams, Martin & Govs big deals expiring which frees up some room.

The Tigers after winning first flag in 17 were able to add Tom Lynch, Dees found room for Grundy last year, Dogs added Treloar after winning their flag.. happens most years where the premier gets better by adding to the list and the team that thinks they are close and have all the pieces stands still and gets passed over by those chasing. We cannot purely rely on natural growth from within our existing list (which has achieved nothing so far) we need to be adding the pieces that we need to get better.

McKay is available, wont cost us a draft pick and is an upgrade on Marchbank/Young and allows Weitering to play a more 'free' role if he isnt locking down the big forwards.

Personal opinion only but feel we really need a solid B+ player for lockdown KP defence. Have never trusted Young for the long term.

Don't like the situation currently where it is Weits or bust. There are certain matchups where another tall def who can hold his ground is required. Other matches we can go smaller.

I think we have more cover in every other position than an AFL class 195+cm KPDer (i dont rate Young). I dont want a draftee that will take 3-4 years. We need a current player ready to go. By all means draft a tall defender if best available but im not interested until 3 years down the line with that option.

Aside from that, best available.

Personally i would have given up Mcgovern for Ben Mckay and just use Kemp as the third tall with a rookie listed Marchbank as backup.

IMO we could do with both a solid ready to go option & a draftee to develop over coming years.
Either way, it'd be great to free Weiters up a bit more to play a more assertive role.

Paul Conners on Gettable yesterday. Says this will be the 'worst' trade period (read low player movement), and thinks there will be less than 50 players taken in the National Draft.

Also there are some proposed list rule changes:

ROOKIE RULE IN MOTION

THE AFL is contemplating extending the length of time a mid-season recruit can spend on the rookie list, after receiving support from clubs in a recent survey. Under the current rules, players are required to be promoted to the senior list after three years on the rookie list. Players selected in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft are currently more vulnerable given they only have two full seasons to prove themselves – if they secure a deal beyond the initial six- or 18-month contract – after arriving halfway through their first season.

Increasing the length of time on the rookie list won't be limiting financially and will provide clubs with greater flexibility. If this is approved as expected, Ash Johnson will remain on Collingwood's rookie list next year, along with Greater Western Sydney forward James Peatling. Both have contracts for 2024. Johnson is also contracted for 2025. Wade Derksen and Max Ramsden also secured two-year deals this year which could see them remain on the rookie list for the duration of those deals.

The rookie list is a joke and should have been abandoned a long time ago..

If they are determined to keep it in place, perhaps in the mid season draft clubs are allowed to select players on another clubs rookie list and offer them contracts on the primary list.

At present at least we're ok.. still think we'll trade our future first to get 2 picks in the first round and expect we'll look at drafting or trading in for another mid and key defender especially if Dow goes.

We could be Geelong with only picks 7, 81 at present in hand... they're in for some hurt.

The club desperately needs to recruit a Key Forward / 2nd Ruck this offseason, it is currently the biggest gap on our list and we have struggled to fill it all season (injuries or otherwise).

Our best structure is with a #1 ruck, a ruck/key fwd and two key forward targets. We need 6 guys to be AFL ready to fill 4 positions, we currently only have 5 and it shows.

  • Pittonet (#1 Ruck)
  • De Koning (#1 Ruck - break glass KPF/Ruck)
  • ??? (KPF/Ruck - break glass #1 ruck, break glass KPF)
  • McKay (KPF)
  • Curnow (KPF)
  • Silvagni (KPF - break glass KPF/Ruck)

We also have Mirkov, O'Keeffe and Lemmey/Akuei, who are all not ready for AFL footy. We have one too many developing talls, and not enough ready to go. My thoughts on Mirkov's list position have been documented previously.

I know these players dont grow on trees, but in my opinion, not having the necessary KPF/Ruck depth has hampered the way we want to play this year.

All year I've been touring Hayden McLean from the Swans to be this guy, but he has broken out in the back end of the season. The Swans surely wouldnt part with him now that Buddy & Hickey are going. Would now cost close to a first rounder, even uncontracted as he is.

Not sure what other options are out there on the market, but we need one for 2024 if want to contend.
Mabior Chol would be a affordable option

Meh (as they say), I abstain from stating my preferences until after the combine and until we know exactly which picks we'll have. What I will say, however, is that I don't want us overpaying for needs or for an extra year in the system.

We need to replace within 3 years.
Docherty
Newman
Saad
Mcgovern
Williams
Cripps (won't be full time mid)
Say Cowan and Binns cover 2 from above.

That is 4 players

In addition
Jack Martin replacement
Key defender
2 mids (1 outside, 1 inside).

Feels like a minimum additional 8 best 22 players, as soon as possible.

Probably on the money with the amount of ND picks, but there’s always players taken later for different circumstances where some end up being solid picks to even
diamonds…

There's also the possibility that we may need to improve on what we already have, not merely replace players. There's a bit to play out yet.

Ha has some intrigue...but we already have Young and Pittonet signed long term. Does Chol just add to our mountain of meh?

Nah, reckon he is more sizzle than sausage.

He has struggled to get games at GC behind Casboult, from the outside looking in, he doesn’t seem to work hard enough.
