Explain how we have been over-performing?
Youngest & least experienced list in the competition almost always finishes in the bottom-2. We were well clear of the standards North & Weagles were setting.

8 wins for this team (in 2022) is an outstanding result. Most pundits looking at our list, both players and demographics, would say that 4-5 wins would be a good result for the year.

No, imo we were about par. Hardly outstanding.

North have been a basket case & Weagles were putting out wafl teams because of covid.

So I was mistaken, and you are talking the team as a whole( sorry Wayne if that's the case)?

I still disagree, but nowhere near as much

The Weagles weren't putting out WAFL teams all season, only for a few games.

Given our list demographics, and lack of elite players, there is no way on God's Green Earth we should have won 4x as many games as Norf & the Weagles.

... and yet, we did.

Wtf?!

North were a complete basket case.

Weagles beginning couple of months were completely disrupted by covid & they decided to tank after as their season was cooked.

Hardly outstanding by us to finish well ahead of either club.

You can’t over perform, only play up to your abilities

It's going to depend not just on wins, but also how we perform in general.

Firstly we have to be super competitive at home. Also there can't be any more uncompetitive performances like we had against GWS, Gold Coast and Hawthorn this year.

There also needs to be visible improvement with our younger players. No one is expecting them dominate the season, but maybe a game or two where someone like a Schoenberg or Berry dominate and give us hope that our younger players have a high ceiling.

In terms of wins, given that there's 23 games I'd be expecting 10-11 wins

So if North finish 15th next year and 14th the year after, they should sack Clarko? Or do you look beyond the win/ loss results and factor in what he has to work with?

Nicks may not be the game day coach we ultimately need to win a flag, but I doubt we are in a position to even test that in the next couple of years.

Dimma and Goodwin were both near sacking when they got their first flags. Sacking coaches to make fans feel better is not always the best tactical move.

You know what helps make a successful game day coach - star players

Truth is all coaches make very few game day moves of significance

And spot on with Nicks and not even being able to test if he is any good.

Point is I don't see Nick's holding his job regardless of wins. I think they will go after an experienced coach such as Simpson, Goodwin or Leppitsch end of next. I think this is the right play. Most likely it would be Goodwin through his relationship with Roo and the opportunity to come home and coach the team he played for. His relationship with the melb hierarchy isn't overly good so I can't see a problem in him being let out of his contract. Goodwin knows Burgess well and this would be another factor.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but I think it's well grounded in reality/history and don't think its that outrageous at all.

Goody won’t be available and if we are going to go after an experienced coach the experience must include a successful coach at senior level which Leppitsch is not

For Nicks not to be at the AFC in 2024 it would need to be a pretty disastrous 2023 season

The back half of this season gives me hope.

If he does revert and the apologists start banging on about experience, games played etc then this to me is a sure-fire sign that Nicks won't see out the season.

Historically we've forgotten lessons learned the season past during those few months in runners. We started the year with Berry in the 2s and Crouch in the 1s. Then we saw TT and Sog dropped after a round 1. I think an uninjured Keays is a lock for first rotation and Sloane is quite likely, Crouch not so much though. Hopefully we at least deepen the rotation if we're going to stick with Sloane and Keays.

I'll repeat Mutineer statement ...... Nicks WILL BE the Crows Coach in 2024

That's the fear.
Surely Sloane can have a line struck through his name straight away?

Nick did a great job rebuilding our culture. The issue for me is the inconsistency in his game plan and selection, almost always electing to go into games undersized, his obsession with smalls hasn't worked. I strongly disagree with the use of Dawson down back. That smacked of coaching to protect his job by being ultra defensive to reduce the risk of blow outs. The other part of the game plan I hate is one week we will play like champions, taking the game on at all costs, the next week we chip it around and almost try and walk the ball down the field. I get having a young and inexperienced group creates inconsistencies, but a lot of what we saw was Nicks doing.

With the extra round in SA now the pass mark for me is 11. A lot of the squad are hitting the 30-50 game mark now which means we should see natural improvement. But its not just wins and losses. Everything outlined above needs to disappear. He needs to be consistent and thats something he has been seriously lacking.

Correct.

We had 8 wins for the year, lets not forget half of those wins were against North and Eagles.

With the other 4 wins we had, we did get those teams at cherry ripe time too.

I wonder how many on here think we can beat Carlton, Port, Dogs and Tigers in 2023?

I think we will be in a similar ball park next year with around 6-8 wins as well. Assuming we play North and Eagles twice.

... and the odds are that we will only get one of them twice.
Many on here gave us a chance of making the 8 in 2022, many think it could happen in 2023, I just think we are still in the process of a rebuild and especially in the most significant hole in our list, the midfield. We not only lack elite, we lack the depth in this area as well.

I dont see it happening till 2025 at least.

I have 2025 as the year we should have realistic expectations of making the finals. Anyone who thinks that's even a possibility in 2023 or 2024 either has no understanding whatsoever of our team list, has rocks in their head, or both.

You're forgetting the compound effect of adding Rankine, and a couple of this years SANFL players ......whilst I don't expect us to make the 8 in 2023, our DEF KPP are still suspect IMO .....I do fully expect 2024

E.G ...Rankine changes the order of defensive matchups by oppo clubs .....will free up Rachelle, who'll be much fitter & prepared next year

You consistently undersell our players .....a couple of losses this year, can be attributed to youthful mistakes & perseverance with those players in the developmental phase

I don't expect as much experimentation with players next season .....we've got good list depth now
