This. But is this a question of personal? It seems we're still lacking a bit of run out of defence. Would Williams, Boyd, Cottrell would make a difference? Or is it both run and tactics?

I think Voss is implementing a game style to fit the cattle he's got to work with.

If we engaged in a shoot out with Richmond, with the ball pinging end to end in open space, I think we would have lost by 5+ goals.

With the outs you mentioned plus Walsh and last week durdin, that's a lot of our better, quicker runners out of the team.

I dont think Voss would always want us to play that slow and conservative.

I was optimistic last week, I have a sinking feeling this week.

Footy is well and truly back.
Funny I'm the opposite.

I was not confident going into last weeks game at all, yet am a little more optomistic about this week. Don't know why it's just the feeling.

Hope you're right haha.

I'm very concerned this midfield group won't allow a whole lot of scoring again. Kicking 55 odd points won't win you many games of football, no matter how good your defence is.

I partly agree, they also need the forwards to be better at creating and winning contests. It doesn't help the mids/half backs when they get the ball forward but immediately the forwards lose the contest and the ball comes back. Our smalls offered no pressure and no assistance to the attack.

I like the optimists in here, sadly when it comes to this game, to our form of late, to the IQ of our players, to team selection, to our entrees into the forward 50, to our small forwards, the magicians in our team (the ones that keep performing disappearing acts) and to the loss of Hewitt ….. I only see dark clouds, very dark clouds.

Cats by 50+ points, over by quarter time.

We will be bullied as we always are. Our boys are men but the reality is they are still children in their demeanour and actions.

Until this changes, if it ever will we will never be serious contenders.

I will be there giving them my support as it’s the club and not the players I give my loyalty to.

Go Blues ….. please, please, please prove me wrong!
Love the final line cop out....

If Geelong are well held in the middle they go outside through Smith - that is a key match-up. Both Rohan and Cameron drag defenders a long way down the field and then burst run back - Carlton doesn't have the running power in the back 6 to cover for that except Saad - so it will be interesting to see what the defensive plan is to counter that. I don't buy for one second (if they play) that Hawkins is sore and TDK's brother is proppy and if they are make them more sore and more proppy.ll

Big test for the Carlton on ball brigade missing Hewett and Walsh - I'm surprised Pittonet isnt playing to add to some clearance muscle - freeing up TDK and Jack more to be a point of difference for Carlton's attacking options.

My confidence in the smalls with or without Martin is as low as it gets so I am set for positive surprise there - but if Geelong win the territorial battle by winning the contests and clearances- they will be struggling to impact - again.

It seems that Vossy has to always play with one hand tied behind his back - who was the idiot that wrecked Cuningham's shoulder FFS - that really gave me the total S**** and whoever it was owes the CLub and his team mates - a LOT.

Don’t beat yourself up about it JaB, the way I look at it is if Cunners didn’t do his shoulder play wrestling with a team mate he would surely have done it when tackled by Nankervis, Tuohy, Hogan or any other opposition player.

The reality is he, like Philp, Boyd, Marchy Martin and Gov have bodies that are not capable of holding up week in week out to the rigours of AFL footy. That’s just too many players in a squad of 45 that can’t be relied upon to play consistently, yet we do it year after year after year. Whilst Philp and Boyd being relative newcomers may still have time to work on it, the others are 7-10 year players so IMO they are who they are. We can’t keep bemoaning bad luck when Martin does a calf injury first game of the season after he had an interrupted pre season with a calf injury.

Until the injuries are addressed definitively by riding our list of these players and recruiting more robust types at the end of the year then selection will be a game of last man standing where the likes of Owies, Ed Curnow, Plowman (if Gov breaks down he’ll likely be in the 22) get games.

The reality is for this week and probably most of the first half of the season we are stuck with these guys. Of the currently injured only Walsh and Hewett will come back in the short term - 2 great ins but neither will address the half forward issues we have. Of the reserves only Dow is really do enough to earn a chance but he isn’t a half forward. The chances of Fisher, Owies, SOS, Martin playing well against the Cats is low but we then we have a run of games where if they can’t perform then I think we have to start blooding new players like Carroll, Honey and Kemp.

Either of those would be huge. That side that played against the Pies last week was already significantly weakened with Kolo, Henry and Stewart missing (Stewart might as well have missed) and Hawkins on one leg all game.

If Hawk or SDK miss entirely then they’ll be as vulnerable a Cats side that we’ll see all year.
Mrs. Cameron doing the right thing would further "vulnerablise" them.

So Jack a late out and its going to be one giant puddle at the G'.

Watch us select a second ruck...

  • Realistically, it should be LOB in for Jack
  • Durds fills that spot in the forward line and Ed takes Georgie's minutes in the middle as the defensive mid
  • Get Fish more involved in the middle and put him on notice - he could be super important in a wet game
  • Give Honey a run as the sub to give us a spark if needed in the second half
  • Give Cowan a strict job on AA forward Stengle and share the load on Rohan/Close/Henry - that quartet can all be dangerous so we'll need to be switched right on down back.
I've still tipped us to win this game given they're missing Stewart and Duncan and SDK is potentially underdone.

Just a thought. Late change, Martin out and Pittonet in, LOB as tactical-sub...?
Geelong only have one tall in their emergencies - Ceglar.

If one of their suspect key talls is the other change Scott is referring to, then Ceglar may come in, allowing Blicavs to play back.

You would assume we would respond to that by bringing in Pitto.

Was confident of a win last week, was not far off. Feeling more positive this week, have enjoyed an extra days break. Absolutely no way known that JSOS, Fish, Blacres, Ed and Charlie would play like they did again. Expecting massive improvement from all of them.
LOB must come in for Martin, we do need his run.
With Sam Dekoning sore, Hawk banged up we have the cats at the perfect time.
Blues by 9 points.
