I agree this is a dilemma. The forward line leaked and lacked the intense pressure last week. Want to see it back to, as was in the run of 50pt wins. extra smalls with a mission to tackle and harass. Solution might depend on whether a) JSOS is part of the consideration, and, b) strength/makeup of Oppo rucks
This is our biggest dilemma.

The value that the two big forwards bring us VS The value a smaller forward line brings us.

Big forward.
  • More scoring power.
  • Better results from our talls as defence can't crowd the one key target.
  • Struggle to fit in all the form genuine small forwards and forward mids.
  • Less forward pressure.
  • Gives us a quality key tall target when having to kick long, especially when coming out of defence up the wing.

Smaller forward line.
  • Can fit in the forward mid rotations and the genuine small forwards in the one team.
  • Elite forward pressure.
  • Correct midfield rotations.
  • Enough genuine small forwards.
  • Less predictable.

How we navigate this, there is only one solution, we rob peter to pay tall or we change McKay's role to second ruck and that gives us the best of both worlds.
We can't have it both ways. If McKay does not ruck he replaces one of Cuningham, Fogarty, Motlop, or Owies. Probably out of Cuningham or Fogarty. So one less small forward and mid rotation.

This is our biggest issue IMO.

Obviously the taller defenders is also another tricky one.

This is great really, it's the sort of thing you talk about when your team is good enough to win it.

Hoyne is correct, the best and most sustainable source is from turnovers, scoring/denying

And prior to GC, in the last 6 weeks we aren't even top 4 for scoring from centre bounces

What he failed to add, we are top 4 for scoring from general stoppages between the arcs and repeat entries

The real kicker, we are top 4 defensively

Avoid the Demons come finals, no reason we can't make a GF
Agree with this.
Pressure and defensive structures create turnovers - think we've seen positive capabilities in these areas in the second half of the season, despite what the stats might say. Plenty could change this week ... but if 1 v 4 is Coll-Melb, I'd be backing Melbourne.
Too far ahead for me to think about the potential ramifications for us in that scenario.

I wish I could agree. How do you have this being bruise free? What am I missing? GWS will be desperate to win won't they?
If Dogs win, they have more percentage. It will be do or die and they can be scary tough.
We need our players uninjured...I honestly don't know how we manage our players for this one.
The one benefit of the time slot is results will already be known. I expect a few late outs if Brisbane beat saints

We always play them at Marvel, where they play well.

If we meet them in the finals, it'll be at the 'G. They won't get within 10 goals of us.
Meh.
Throw 'em a bone.
They'll be too distracted to notice anything.
Also, if they come near the ball just get Walshy to give a firm 'no', 'stay Bont, 'Good dog.'
It's all in the tone and body language.:p

Since we started winning, we've only had the 'smaller forward line' for 3 games, when we kicked 14, 10 and 9 goals.

We were winning despite having the small forward line, not because of it.

Hey baggers I'm flying down from Sydney for this game, I hear parking at Marvel isn't as easy as it once was, the website is saying parking allocation exhausted. So is there a next best alternative? Ideally without much walking as I will have my old man with me . Tia

parking in wilson car parks all over the city - weekend rates probably cap out at $15 for the day/evening..........

I'd go the Wilson carpark at 800 Bourke St. Think it's $12.

Would be handy if the people reading stats actually understood them & also explained the limitations. Having an actual grasp on the English language would be handy as well.
“Sustainable” & “Turnover” is an oxymoron- turnovers by their very nature are random occurrences & created by an error- it is a reactionary measure.
How can it be “Sustainable” (able to be maintained at a certain level or rate) to rely on random errors? What if they produce no errors?
Argument goes completely out the window, as the base premise “Sustainable Turnover” is just bullshit.

Leave plenty of leeway time-wise even at 6pm on a Sunday. With the amount of road closures/works, it’s an absolute nightmare driving in the CBD and surrounding areas at the moment.

Where are you staying? If near a train station, or even can park near a train station simpler to just catch the train to Southern Cross station and you're right next door to the stadium.

Thanks

Hi mate I am staying at my parents place in Wallan so I'll be driving to the game. Wilsons parking on Bourke st looks the way to go and ofcourse I'll leave myself plenty of time to get there and seated 👍

Yeap, it's actually very simple

Sustained defensive pressure, causes more opposition turnovers. Do it in your forward half is generally more ideal

Scoring on the counter once the turnover occurs comes down to the system of both sides, how quickly the opposition can get back defensively versus how quickly you can move it into a dangerous scoring position

Scoring from centre clearances is great, scoring from turnovers is a better source

Simple theory, both sides average around 140 turnovers a game, you might only have 30 centre bounces a game

It’s easy - I’ll have a bigger & smaller forward line please :)

Everyone’s a winner !

I agree, although when we dial up the pressure turnovers are extremely likely.
