That was dour.

A number of players had their worst games for the year - Mitchell, Edwards, Hall-Kahan, McAndrew.

Buller looks dangerous every time he's involved and I really like his agility for his size. Rankin was clean and composed off half back. Ladhams and Roberts got through unscathed (I think?) Really struggling to find any other positives.

Stephens could have 90 disposals in a game and it wouldn't have any bearing on the result. Just no damage from him at all once again.

Agree. Stephens seems to get a lot of the ball but it is never damaging. Still, you have to be able to get the ball before you can do anything, so there is something to build on.

I only saw the last quarter which was a real disappointment as I was looking for green shoots and there was nothing. It was interesting for me because one of the Footscray boys plays for our club here and last year after he played against us he commented on how big and physical we were - with special reference to Amartey. I will ask him on the weekend, but I don't think he would have come from this game thinking the same thing about us this year.

Thought there were a couple of decent F50 entries from Stephens. Ladhams fell over for one, McAndrew's mark and goal at the end. But you've got to do it when it counts.

What makes this team so damned weak? There are definite problems with the VFL listed players. But some of this listed players too. We should have won the rucks easily as they gave no rucks. That should give us first use but does not seem to.

Too many of our players simply can't kick or make dreadful decisions. I mean, when we won our first natch they celebrated like it was a GF. For ****'s sake. We need to get much better than this to feed players to the seniors.

I have not seen the match but the score tells the story. So disappointing. Too many players just not improving. I saw the coach's record and was not that impressed. I don't understand why we hired him.

Asked myself the same question at the time. Interesting that GWS have improved with Laidler while we've gone backwards. There are cattle issues for sure but ...

No midfield.

Aside from Stephens (and Clarke for a while), we basically have no experienced midfielders.

None.

The young draftees seem to all play half-back with occasional forays onto the wing (apart from Matty Roberts, who hadn’t played in months).

And those in the middle have numbers in the 50’s on their back (i.e, they aren’t AFL listed).

Didn't we pick up a handful of coaches from GWS last off-season while losing a few of our own?

I'm no maths wiz but I feel like subtracting coaches from a GF team and adding coaches from a 16th placed team isn't a good equation for any side.

We basically swapped reserves coaches with GWS on every line

not able to watch last quarter and a bit

from what I saw the only talls that showed much were Arnold and Buller.
Yep, watched most of the game and thought Arnold was good.. Dont know if hes got another contract? but a few games and a pre-season to learn the system and he could be half decent next year - at least he could offer good depth/injury cover.
Buller was good
Both seem very mobile which I reckon is a big asset

Aye re their mobility. Both seem to have a decent tank as well. Buller will improve more with a solid pre season.

JB played as a roaming chf which was a bit different.

Having an effective Ressies team is vital for the Club. The drop off this year from 2022 is extreme. Injuries through the Club have affected performance as have the loss of experienced players in Sinkers and Lewy Taylor, the very light bodies we drafted in 2022 and possibly the change in coaching set up.

Not one of the 2022 draft is close to making a debut this year. I’m not saying that cohort is a total bust but beyond Edwards there has been little to write home about Re improvements and player development. Caleb Mitchell and Magor have shown a bit. Must say I hope Mitchell gets midfield time over the rest of the season.

I hope the end of season review of 2023 pays special attention to how we can improve the Ressies. This should include a look at how our pool of top up players can be improved. Only three toppies in Shipley, Bartholomeus and Harry Morrison have been effective contributors. Many toppies are light framed smallish players who have struggled at the level. Thank the stars we used the MSD to bring in two capable talls.

Looking fwd to what Buller does next season.
Hasn't done a single AFL pre season yet.
Still essentially a part timer

Hopefully we give Arnold an extension for 2024 as well

Ressies team probably needs a few more mature bodied journeymen who can play VFL week in week out.
I believe we are obligated to play a certain number under a certain age so there will be limits.
