Not much directly related to us since it focuses on the first round, but definitely an interesting read if you're invested into drafting and the trades on draft night.

Bit of insight into the Collingwood draft. Looks like they were also keen on Archer Reid and Morris too.

Brandon Starcevich signs one-year contract extension to end of 2025

Medium defender Brandon Starcevich has penned a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Brisbane until at least the end of the 2025 season.
The 24-year-old was due to come off-contract at the end of 2024 however the Lions moved swiftly to extend the ever-reliable defender, who has missed just one game in the past three seasons.
Starcevich enjoyed an uber-consistent 2023 campaign, featuring in every game – including the grand final – and finished equal-fifth in the club’s best and fairest count.

After going so close to winning the flag this year, the West Australian said the club was “on the verge of something special” and he was eager to play a part in future premiership pursuits.
“We have an exciting list made up of a great group of guys who I love playing with and I am glad to get to do that for at least the next two years,” he said.
“Although we were grand finalists this season there’s still plenty of improvement in myself and the team, so I can’t wait to get to work and see what we can achieve.”
The Lions landed Starcevich with pick 18 in the 2017 national draft.
After playing just five games in his first two seasons, he became a plug-and-play starter for coach Chris Fagan in 2020 and has not looked back.
He is often the go-to man to match up on the opposition’s most dangerous small forward – doing the dirty jobs so that the likes of Keidean Coleman, Darcy Wilmot and Conor McKenna can join the attack.

Brisbane footy boss Danny Daly said Starcevich’s top-five finish in the best and fairest showed how much he was valued by his teammates and coaches.
“Brandon has played a key role in helping the club get back to the top end of the ladder and we are thrilled to have him recommit as we aim for future success,” Daly said.
“He is coming off another strong season where he finished top five in our best and fairest as a key player in our defensive end.
“Keeping players and people like Brandon at our football club is very important to our future, so having him extend his time here is great news.”

Seems a bit short for a "top 5" player?

I think it brings him to free agency. Hopefully its as simple as we have a lot of contracts to renew this season and both he and the club are happy to just push his back another year before he signs a long term contract at the end of next season.

The cynic in me says it suggests we might have salary cap issues in coming... hope I'm wrong obviously. A tight salary cap is to be expected I suppose when you've been at the top of the mountain for as long as we have been.

No doubt having to sign Mckenna to a decent contract wouldn't have been in the clubs medium to long term salary cap plans 2 years ago.

I agree, some might say it takes him to Free Agency, also takes him to No Gabba for 4 years and a decision needing to be made there.

If we had to lose a top line player because of a salary cap squeeze, Starcevich going would be preferable to a lot of other players IMO.

We don't want to be losing the likes of McCluggage, Hipwood, Andrews, Bailey, Fletcher, Coleman, Ashcroft, Wilmot.

The optimist in you should also remind you of how well the club has been run over the last 5 years and that the professional people we now have will sort what's best for the club list wise 100%. ;)

Hipwood isn't worth the money he is being paid. I would prefer to lose him and go with a small forward line.

Gets him through to his free agency eligibility in 2025, probably more his preference I'd guess? Can't see any reason why we wouldn't want to do a longer deal.
Maybe it wasn't his decision to make for a longer deal?

All I am saying is that The Lions is now (& has been for several seasons now) a destination club and a very attractive option for any player to consider should he be given the opportunity.

Nah, its the perfect long term investment for a player who wants to stay (I'm guessing) at less than top line salary. He's our academy player and home grown talent as well which is added bonus.

Hipwood kicked 40+ for the first time last season and he's in prime position to become that 50 goal forward for us. Great move by the club to lock him away.

Don't want to be losing a KPF, Hippy in his prime years now and IMO he still has improvement in him.

KPF are hard to find and/or develop, much easier to find a lock down defender like Starc.

I would hazard a guess that by the time Eric is well into his contract his salary will be above average at best, I believe he has prioritised job security above remuneration.

Depends on what he's being paid. Interested to hear what SpecialBruce can share regarding his contract.

Well when he signed for three years it was around 2 million. So $650,000 a year most likely. So it won't be less than that and could be upwards of $700,000-750,000. You can't tell me he is worth that. I wouldn't pay $500,000 a year for him. No team would. He doesn't step up in big games and is unreliable in front of goal. Locking him in on what coin he may be on now for 6 years is ludicrous.

41.29 this year SB. I'd say he's OK in terms of accuracy - it definitely improved this year.
