I didn’t think it would at the time but maybe being sub in a top 2 team and showing him he is basically on the line of being a regular was actually very effective. Subject to form I would like to see him begin starting games to get a feel for it the top level a bit more and to be less of a wildcard for our structures when he comes on.
That’s a really astute point. When he Lohmann came on it was like he was looking to make an immediate and individual impact. There was lots of energy and fizz, but he didn’t cohere with the team approach and those around him. It was almost like he needed to dial it back from “eleven”. Good luck to him though. Quick recovery from injury and a positive 2024.

One thing to take out of all this is those who have recently put themselves as “in the know” are just bullshitting. This forum isn’t as “tuned in” as it used to be.

It’s not over until it’s over. Great signings. Hopefully Dev follows but he looked a little sheepish in the news video.

Pot meet kettle.

I thought that immediately after he kicked his first and only goal when playing Gold Coast on the goal line in the last quarter. We were no hope of anything when he kicked it and whilst I get it was his first ever goal, his celebration and fist pumping were more than OTT given the time he kicked it. Definitely an all about me moment where he didn’t read the room.

I do look forward to him kicking numerous goals next year though and celebrating accordingly.

When Lohman came on in his last game he tried to do far too much every time he got near it rather than look to dish it off and it did cost us.

I'm sure we've put time in trying to tone down his need to try the spectacular and once he has a permanent role he should become more team focused.

I'm not completely sold on him until he produces at least some adequate footy at Senior level but he has the tools to become a permanent AFL player once he learns the ropes and it's a smart decision of his to stick with us because he's just about next cab off the rank if a small forward goes down or loses form in 2024.

Even with a two year deal, the option is still there for Kai to request a trade if he's not playing regular seniors by the end of next year. Obviously a good outcome for the club but I think it still works for Kai in terms of his future.

I think he needs to spend the summer getting super fit, improve his defensive game and then aim himself at Zorko's spot in the best 22. Different players, for sure, but I think he needs to aim to become a 15-20 touch, connecting, pressuring high half forward
Could see Linc taking the Zorko spot next year and Kai moving to Lincs spot. Linc's disposal is pretty good and I generally feel confident when he is kicking into the 50. Maybe that is what they sold him on?

It may be that part of his role was to just pressure and harass etc so hard to know

That's a really pleasant surprise with Kai. With all the trade rumours around him and that he had gone so long without re-signing I had already accepted he was gone. We really are bucking the trend of losing young talent while competing.

No idea what this is even referring too. But love the energy.
Wot, wot, you plead ignorance understanding "pot meet kettle" but you are literate in "reading between the lines."

Just waiting for the why am I shouted down shtick?

Fair bit of talk on the QAFL board about Rich potentially playing for a QAFL team next year. There was an interesting comment by one poster, saying that the Lions want Rich still playing for our VFL team next year.

Interesting discussion.
Maybe we are enticing Rich with a player / assistant coach role in the VFL side.

I've heard he's going to Noosa...Matty Leuenberger the newly appointed coach up there. It could also be a case of being involved in Lions VFL, but affiliated with Noosa for the odd game as per Wylie Buzza for Morningside. Just speculating.

Players not contracted for next year

Blake Coleman
Cockatoo
Matho
Fullerton
Macdowell- White
Zorko
Dev

Rich (retired)
Adams (retired but replaced on list by Joyce)
Gunston (a hint at retirement but unlikely)

That's the state of play at the moment.

I'm happy for Zorks to get 1 more year, Dev I'd really like to keep. Gunston won't retired unless he has back issues or something like that.

So I guess it's Rich, Coleman, young White, Cockatoo, Matho n Fullerton, that's 6, that will make way for trades and draft. Possibly Dev as well if he moves on.

We've been linked to

Doedee -- good call, long term benefit and improvement.

Coffield -- a slight gamble, a taller med defender (190cm), back from injury. With Lester, Michael, Answerth off contract end of 24, if he was to live up to his high Draft pick expectations he could push for a role like Lester this year or even McKenna If he got injured.

Chol -- would only be a thought if Gunston retires and if Fages was set on 3 talls.

Have I missed anyone else we've been linked too?

Just trying to get it sorted in my head, had to get it down. I can see us trading in 3 at the most, I'm OK with Doedee, Coffield and a tall fwd or fwd/ruck even if Gunston stays on. I think we need better depth there if Hippy or Joe go down.

Then we're required to draft 3. Have we any Academy kids we'd be keen on taking? Are any of them key position players?

Small but needs based player movement is all we need to do now to keep this team and club in the hunt for a long time.

Next years list of out of contracted players at the Lions is scary good and I hope we lock a few of these boys away this off-season. List includes McCluggage, Berry, McCarthy, Kiddy Coleman, Prior, Starcevich and then the likes of Madden, Lester and Answerth too. Wouldn’t think Gunston would go beyond 24.

Lester, Gunston, Zorko, Lyons will drop off the list for sure at the end of 24. Answerth a definite chance as well.

Hasn't the Afl and the Players association come to terms just recently regarding player payments, with a substantial increase in salary caps? If I'm right I'd reckon there's enough of an increase there to lock in the others you've mentioned. Those signed for 25 and longer are already penned in to future budgeting as it is now. Apart from maybe a small % increase for them, the bulk of it would be available to upgrade those necessary players. Anyway I hope that's how it will work.

Yep, a few of those will re-sign in the offseason and all of a sudden the list will look a lot less concering. Someone like McCluggage will probably negotiate into the season - he did last time too.

2 talls from academy, Richardson and McDonald. We could rookie at least 1 or both.

If rookie list is your best expectation for them I'd be looking in the draft primarily. Surely, with some manipulation, we should be able to wrangle a pick in the first 35, maybe 25 if the footy gods shine on us, but anywhere between 25 -35 I'd reckon we could pick up a handy fwd with potential.

My concern is this is a very light on draft for mids, while next year’s draft looks deep for mids.

So I’m expecting teams to go early on this year’s KPP’s.

Also, if we are going after Coffield, I’m expecting St Kilda to ask for our second round pick.
