If Ben does decide he wants to go elsewhere, and this may have already been suggested, but why don't we just go and get Himmelberg?
What KC said. He's the most in-demand free agent available this year, every Victorian club is after him.

GWS have an offer of 5x700k already on the table for him.

We'd probably have to offer 850k+ x 5 just to get a meeting.

That's smart. We can also offer him a lot of inadvertent newspaper coverage because we feature in at least 1x major off-field story each year, usually unrelated to anything our football club actually did.

Wayne Carey, Hawthorn FC and Tarryn Thomas like this
Perfect he can be spokesperson too, we can push him out front of the cameras with the instruction of deny deny deny, Not sure what he wants to do life after footy but it’s perfect training for anyone who wants a job in PR or gov.

Its not that simple.
What if he goes to Port Adelaide and becomes a Premiership CHB, All Australian and plays the next 7 years there?
And all we got was a pick in the 20's for him as compensation.
Would you be happy then?.

What if he goes there, gets two head knocks in five games and retires like Ben Jacobs.

He's playing on potential. He's had one season two years ago where he was consistently good.

650x5 probably means a club needs to offer 700x5 to get him - Experts, is that Band 1 territory? I assume it's close...

Danihers was reportedly 2.5M over 3 years

What works in our favour is Ben is a "young" FA so he'll get bumped up years. And while he may have slipped from last year fact is a lot of offers would have come in based on last season and that KP's of his age and talent/potential are gold.

That's because Himmelberg is a proven gun who can play either end, has finals wins under his belt etc.

Let's be honest, if we spent Band 1 compo on an injury prone 25 year old who has played 55 games and is still playing on potential rather than results which is what Ben McKay actually is, people would storm Arden Street looking to hang Brady by his nostril hairs.
This is from the AFL website. See the bolded bit for how we'll get screwed:

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

Is Laura Kane involved in this from the afl

I think it will be used to help us not hinder us. We'll go to the AFL justifiably asking for a Priority Pick and they'll say no, however they'll give us a 1st round compo pick regardless of whether the formula warrants one or not.

Can or could pick purchasing work like this?
Eg: We buy Carlton’s first at a price high enough for them to fit in Mckay and a little bit more room in the cap. What they pay Mckay effectively gives us first round compensation which in a round about we are paying for.

Carlton could then have cap room to fit in Gresham.

I haven’ t thought much about it so just using the names and clubs above as an example. Just trying to fully get my head around it.

Wouldn't we get shortchanged in that scenario?

We give Carlton salary space (lol) for their pick

We give Carlton McKay for... their pick

So Carlton get salary cap relief (again, lol sure) AND McKay and we just get their one little pick?

We buy their first, plus we get compensation pick for Mckay.

Probably haven't explained it well, like i said i'm trying to get my head around it.

I think we get pick 3 Compo too.

Ok ok...

You have dismantled me - but done it so lovingly.

You've got the job.

I hope so.

So we get our pick (2), comp pick (3), priority pick (4) and Carltons first pick (7). Then the Port pick. Imagine if Port had sucked too.

I'm now addicted to this, who else can we trade out for a first round pick? I want 6 of them.
