We should look at Zac Williams.

Hes 28, has 3 years left on ~850K and is coming off an ACL. Blues cap is tight they need to offload some cash.

Well worth a punt if we can get a nice pick attatched.

Why would we get Aaron Hall's shit little brother?

You’d expect a top ten pick and them to pay a fair chunk. $2.5 million is a pricey pick.

This makes me think the AFLPA should be joining the drive for salary cap for pick purchasing. Clubs having to pretend to want players and players having to move jobs for no other reason doesn't help anyone.

But considering players still can't voluntarily move to the rookie list and have to do so via delisting, gonna punt the AFLPA don't really give a toss about player welfare. Unless it's the really rich ones who want to be able to move clubs without impediments.

Originally this idea was floated with the condition that we get their first round pick as well as Williams and his massive salary.

That would be the only reason to do it too.

This, as long as it's their first. We'd basically be pick purchasing and getting Williams who Carlton thought could be a midfielder but is definitely just a half back, which isn't a big need for them but is for us.

I once saw Stephen Patterson take about 45 intercept marks against us and he was about 160cm tall.

This s**t has been happening for a long time.
I have scar tissue from Mitch McGovern taking 100 intercept marks when playing for Adelaide. The only saving grace is probably added an extra $100k p/a to his Carlton contract.

Even then. The idea is you also get someone you actually would want to play. Bowes was decent last night for example.

Pretty much. Looks like a win win to me. Blues have plenty of half back options. Perhaps we throw them a late pick back.

I dunno. If no ones available, we have the cash and Carlton offer us pick 4 then Williams can play until we drop him to the VFL, (so for a week or two.)

Pay him out over two years and delist him. Its worth it for another top five pick this year. If we do it and end up with three high (top 5-7) picks this year (with McKay compo) then we've brought in 5 picks in the top 5-7 over two seasons. That's a huge injection of talent and gives our coaching group alot to work with. WE could end up with something like Watson, Caddy and McKercher. That's three top players who all fit list needs. Plus the Port pick.

The AFL gave us two extra rookie spots but it was on the basis of bringing in experience to help the yoof. SO it might help us keep those two list spots for another year as well. I rated Williams higher at Sydney. Maybe he'll be a better player at North. Carlton is a shithole side after all. But even without that (unlikely) happening I still think its worth it for a top five pick, this year if we have two other ones.

Its a highly unlikely situation anyway, but in those specific circumstances would be worth it.

Williams signed on with us as a FA and as far as I recall some rulebook nerd on our board quoted one stating we can't move his cash on until his initial deal is done. If we traded him his cash would still be on our books regardless.

We also would be 0 chance of trading our first selection in a cap dump given our Pres, CEO, Footy boss and Coach have said we'll be hitting the draft this year. Right now our picks are 5 and 2 4th rounders.

Absorbing around $2.7m and taking on a 29yo coming off a knee reco. That’s one hell of an expensive draft pick. They can throw in their 2nd rounder as well.
Under the new proposed salary dump rules you wouldn't even take on the player, just pay part of the contract.

What about your future 1st? You could finish higher next year.

We've already got LMAC on a long term deal on who knows how much for very little return. It beggars belief how he got extended for 5 years, why not 4 or 3 or 2? It wasn't so long ago we finally rid ourselves of Polec who was overpaid and underperformed. Mistakes like these and others have to be avoided to allow us to pay our current and future stars what they're worth or they'll be off. There will always be mistakes, just plan to avoid disasters.
I hope Brady knows how to use a spreadsheet and that all contracts are subject to rigorous review.
