Call me desperate for a silver lining, but many of us have been calling for a transformation of our back six for years.

Griffs injury, McKay leaving and Ziebells likely retirement forces this issue. There will no longer be anywhere to hide.

FB - McDonald - Corr - ???
HB - Goater - ??? - Bergman

Throw in another runner & a stop gap with an emphasis on locking down. It certainly will have more run then our back six had this year.

Think it has to be a stopgap for a couple of years.
Probably a player that’s been in the system Oscar McDonald or even our old mate durds

got to keep mckay and hopefully get himmelberg on big coin as a free agent to fill those 2 spots

and still recruit a ready made depth KPD for backup

Alternatively the brown lining is that McDonald and Corr will get leave passes because the defence is so depleted.

tbh they were already going to play regardless due to the age bracket (mcdonald as the small defender and corr as the third tall) now corr will have to play as a chb or fb tho

Do we make Esava the richest backmen in the comp, I think we are going need to pay massive overs to get this shite show on track.

The only thinkg we have going for us is cash and lots of it, so lets spend it.
Well McGov is reportedly still on $1.1m so that would make Esava very rich indeed.

I wonder what comically large amount of money would have to be thrown at his team mate Tom Barrass to entice him, and what pick WCE would require in return. I imagine pick 12 or something thereabouts.

Griff is massive loss as he allowed McKay to leave “guilt free” and we could easily justify losing him for a draft pick.

I’m happy to play kids in the back half for the next season (Bergman, Goater, Archer) and they’ll have to play tall. I’ve said it everywhere but I’d also be having Eddie Ford training with the defenders next preseason. 190cm, kicks it beautifully and has great hands.

In all seriousness pay Mckay overs to stay, offer Ash overs, get an Ethan Phillips or Oscar McDonald or both. Look for cheap trade options like Answeth and others.

Start playing Dawson.
Have a look at Comben back over the pre season.
Hope Goater, Bergman can come on.

And invest in talls at the draft

Our back 6 mix has been stuck in how the game was played 20 years ago. Time to build a back 6 that can play the modern game.

Drafting someone like Philactides/Roberts
/best running hbf prospect, with dash and skill, with our Port pick + a big preseason from Bergman and Goater.

All of a sudden we have 3 good sized half backs that can run, defend and kick. They need to get games together.

I’m all for getting in a stop gap or two (particularly KPD), but I’d be using this as an opportunity to build a back 6 that can set us up long term.

I’d be very reluctant to be trading anything of high value to address this issue for the short term. Oppo clubs will smell the desperation. Kinda like how Port knew we were desperate for “outside run”, enter Jared Polec

It's our midfield that can't run both ways that is the real issue. Logue will be back, won't he?

Yeah Logue will be back, hence why I’m not panic buying someone else’s defender to help a 12 month issue.
You would hope that if Ben McKay was halfway out the door, and he had been six months prior too, that there wouldn’t be much panic involved.

North Melbourne’s star recruit Griffin Logue has torn his ACL in another disastrous development for a club that already has significant issues attempting to revamp its besieged backline.
Scans on Monday confirmed Logue’s diagnosis, with the defender meeting with his surgeon Julian Feller to plan out his recovery.

The decision could have a trickle-down effect on the future of restricted free agent Ben McKay, who was likely to leave the club at the end of the season before his defensive partner went down.

It will also likely make the Roos’ request for a priority pick all the more compelling given their run of 14 losses, with the club using their extra second-round pick handed to them last year by the AFL to secure Fremantle’s Logue.

The Roos’ defence has been under siege all year as Logue, McKay, Aidan Corr, Luke McDonald and Jack Ziebell attempted to repel attacking thrusts.

Logue has mixed excellent moments with games which have frustrated the Roos faithful as he began his first season of a five-year deal worth $650,000 a season.

If the Roos could secure first-round compensation for McKay after another club offered him up to $800,000 a season over five years they would almost certainly allow him to leave.

It would see them handed a No. 3 overall draft pick as compensation on current ladder position.

But Logue’s absence for a large chunk of 2024 means coach Alastair Clarkson and his list team have decisions to make about whether they match a bid for McKay or offer him a competitive contract.

Essendon is still seen as an interested party but might be keener to offer $600,000 a season, which would only secure the Roos second-round compensation — with a pick around No. 21.

If the Roos are determined to go to the draft they could still allow McKay to leave for that early second-rounder given they also have Port Adelaide’s first-round pick and their own first-rounder.

Port Adelaide has some interest but is first working on retention of its stars and its priority target would be Geelong’s Esava Ratugolea, whose talks will also likely drift until the end of the year.

Sydney has been one of the strongest suitors for McKay but their interest in West Coast interceptor Tom Barrass is real.

Barrass is only in the first year of a five-year deal but turns 28 in October and is seen as one of the few players with real trade currency as the Eagles attempt to stockpile draft picks.

West Coast might ask for multiple first-round picks for the interceptor or just Sydney’s current pick which sits at No. 4 overall.

Barrass is likely to consider Sydney’s overtures at the end of the year and has family links to the city of Sydney.

GWS swingman Harry Himmelberg has interest from multiple clubs across the league but clubs on the Gold Coast for the Under-16 carnival last week believed he would remain in NSW and play for the Giants or Sydney next year.

Roos football boss Todd Viney confirmed the news on Logue on Monday.

“We understood Griff had suffered a significant knee injury and unfortunately, scans today confirmed an ACL rupture to his left knee,” he said.

“Despite knowing his injury was serious, Griff continued to support his teammates throughout the game yesterday. The way he went about it is a testament to the professional he is. Everyone at the club will be there to support him as he begins the first steps of his rehab.”

Who have you got running around in state leagues that can fill a key position defender role until we can develop our own.
Oscar Mcdonald , limited but these are the types we might need to look at for a short term role?
Is Petric still showing promise?
How is Mutaz El Nour going at Richmond?

Any key position forwards looking ok as we might have to move Comben back?
This is the Comben who has played less than 10 games in three and a half seasons…

If he stays great….
If he goes ….l just hope the club doesn’t let him go for peanuts….
Fude that idea that we just let him walk for second round compo….if he goes and you want him…cough up or &#&$&-& off.
Get the best deal possible….thank goodness having Viney.….hopefully he rides the recruiting team hard all off season to ensure no peanut deals.

Surely the AFL have spoken to Viney and asked what his top two potential trades would be. And that the AFL have also spoken to the clubs of these potential players to find out what they would be willing to give them up for.

Our draft concessions (if any) most likely will end up something like that: pick 15 to be I traded and pick 25 to be I traded.

North bring in a couple of stop-gap KPPs.

Otherwise, take the club out the back of the shed and put everyone out of their misery.

The club has always seemed so relaxed about McKay leaving.
I can’t remember any of the usual guff like “he’s a required player and we’re confident we can get a deal done”.
The optimist in me wonders how that can be explained, without another key defender waiting in the wings, when someone as impressive as Viney is calling the shots.
Though it feels like quite the leap of faith, after the past decade.

Cause we don’t ****ing want him.

And that’s is 100% the correct course of action

Then Logue blows a knee 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

A bunch of tweeners surrounding a single KPF may just do with Clarkos team defence preference. Now just to locate that single KPF…

Take Nick Haynes salary on board.

We get an experienced high end professional in an area of desperate need and a pick as well.
