Wanna play a scary game?

Try selecting your 2024 Round 1 back 6 assuming Logue has done an ACL and McKay leaves…

Who because of our desperation we'll have to immensely overpay.

We've fkd this.
Doubt we’d have to break the bank for a Caleb Graham or an Adam Tomlinson. The mere prospect of playing regular games would be attractive, I imagine. Agree we’ve planned poorly, but we should’ve been recruiting KPD experience this off season anyway.

Or drafted one in the last five years….

Dogs were keen AF on Adam last year and there was even a small market for Billy Frampton. We're no good and player managers know we're desperate. We'll be looking at Corr type contracts for blokes who aren't getting games elsewhere. Not great when you expect your gun youngsters to start demanding more over the next few years.

If you want to have genuine nightmares, look at our drafts from 2010-2015.

These are the senior core of most AFL clubs 25-30 years old.

It’s a complete and utter shitshow.

McDonald, Turner and McKay.

That’s it. That’s the list.

No wonder we’re ****ed.

I think what that understates is the possibility that some number of those players, people, may have had very different careers, and perceived "ability", if they landed somewhere else. Our place isnt the one to bring the best out of people, and hasnt been for a while. Hopefully Clarko et al are the ones to change the momentum.

Aren’t we getting Hunter Clarke for free? He hasn’t signed yet.

Great question! I have been watching this space closely too! (I thought I was the only one). Was supposed to sign on with Saints but hasn’t yet. Anyone got any news/updates on Hunter Clark and whether we’re still interested or if he still is to come across? Even though injury prone, I believe he would look good on a wing/hb flank role. Thoughts?

Who have you got running around in state leagues that can fill a key position defender role until we can develop our own.
Oscar Mcdonald , limited but these are the types we might need to look at for a short term role?
Is Petric still showing promise?
How is Mutaz El Nour going at Richmond?

Any key position forwards looking ok as we might have to move Comben back?

We're going to have to shift gears as a club and recruit enough journeymen from around the league just to give us a structure next year. A la Roos era Melbourne.

Another lesson to add to Melbourne, Carlton etc over the last 2 decades of not cutting to the bone and expecting kids to magically flourish in a perennially losing team.

Its no secret that our backline is the issue.

The saving grace is that backlines are easiest to fix - much easier than the long process of drafting then blooding enough top liners to completley rebuild a midfield.

Not only are there good examples of this outside our club - look at what the Dees did recruiting Lever and May as plug and play KPDs - but also Clarko is a master of this, having repeatedly recruited ready mades to fit his system to great effect.

Imo our backline was getting a cleanout at the end of the year anyway and they're far more focused on building the system rather than players, and would have been bringing in players to fit the system regardless.

Obviously the Logue injury is gutting, but I reckon a full burn down and rebuild job on the backline was happening regardless.

Will be very interested to see who we target in the off season.

Oscar McDonald & Ethan Phillips are probably the only 2 key defenders that really spring to mind. I'd probably go Phillips over McDonald though. Phillips is a better contested mark, but the question is on his mobility.

Petric is still showing some promise, playing as a key defender for the Jets. Had his best game on the weekend with 29 disposals, 9 marks and 5 tackles. I think he looks really natural as a key defender and he has enough upside to be on an AFL list as a rookie.

Archie May is another over age key forward who I think we should investigate looking at. He is still only 18 but is a big lump of a kid at 197cm and around that 92-93kg mark. Is a strong contested mark and isn't afraid to throw his body around. He has kicked 17.8 in only 6 games for Sandringham.E

El Nour is going okay at Richmond without being outstanding, he hasn't really built on his game from last year so I wouldn't imagine he'd be on many clubs radars.

Wouldn't say there are many key forwards out there in the state leagues that are worth taking. If we were really desperate maybe Hudson Garoni from Werribee.

Hopefully we use our rookie selections correctly this year and it give us a bit of cover where we have no depth.

Adding players like Howe and Turner was awful list management.

The club has coped a lot of sh1t over the last few years, but let's be honest, a lot of it is deserved.

Who the heck signed off on the decision to recruit 17 midfielders and we have totally ignored our key position players?

Call it bad luck or bad team management but....

If Logue is out for 2024 and McKay leaves, then our most experienced key defenders become -

Corr - who is unreliable and not a Key Position.
Dawson - hasnt played a game in 2023.

We deserve the criticism.....

Agree with most of what you're saying, but I'd argue that it's our inability to chase, tackle and put pressure on the opposition ball carrier that is a more fundamental problem. It will always be hard for our defenders to defend, when the opposition can waltz down the ground under absolutely no pressure.

ah, the Cam Joyce period. And in 2016 we promoted him to GM of Football cause Scott thought he had done a great job!

One player I forgot to mention was
Tyler Sellers.

He would probably be worth a look from our VFL side. He is a little bit undersized (192cm) but has a decent set of hands, had good mobility and is a neat set shot for goal.
