Pelchen wasn't great but he didn't realize he was boarding the Titanic AFTER it hit the iceberg.

Scott Watters said on his episode of 'Sacked' that one of the first things he and Pelican had to do was drive to Zac Dawson's house and tell him he wasn't getting a pay rise with his new contract and that, because the salary cap was so poorly managed, he would have to take a pay CUT in order to stay.

But that's all in the past now. No point crying about it.

The cap was fa-kucked when Pelchen took over.

We had a month to sort it out otherwise it would have been another Carlton situation (which would have probably meant the end of the club).

Everyone cries foul with pushing Ball, BJ, etc out but without blokes taking massive pay cuts we would have breached the salary cap & copped the resultant fines & draft penalties.

Carlton had the resources to survive (even though it killed them for a decade)... I doubt we would have.

All can be traced back to GT. He gave his group of boys massive contracts that were impossible to wind back.

Well Nat Fyfe has re signed, looks like we missed our big fish

I can't understand the Hawks moves.

They now have NINE ruck or ruck/forward options on their list after yesterday.

Reeves - 209cm - Ruck
Clay Tucker - 204cm - Ruck
Ramsden - 203cm - Ruck
Meek - 203cm - Ruck
Lynch - 200cm - Ruck/Forward
Lewis - 200cm - KPF
Brandon Ryan - 200cm - Forward/Ruck
Jeka - 198cm - KPF
Kosi Jnr - 196cm - Forward/Ruck

Seems like absolute overkill.
Will trade out others, essential gaining picks for no loss at all. Smart move really

Supposedly it was tied to bonuses for BnF wins, club awards, triggers in contracts etc that were never accounted for.

Stuff like "If this player finished top 5 BnF he gets $50k extra" and so you have $250k worth of 'extra' money that wasn't included in the submission to the AFL and had to be paid back.

Completely ****ed it.

Yes we had some cap issues, but pushing out the future leaders was a disgraceful decision. BJ, McEvoy and Dal Santo were forced out of the club they didnt want to leave, it was horrendous player management in every aspect. IMO BJ over rated his own worth $$$, he got what he wanted at Essendon but we shouldnt have treated him as we did.

'Some' cap issues is understating it a tad.

JVR looks like they found another Naughton type of power forward. Looks a very high end talent. Nas looks like a smooth moving distributor but not a guy who'll sell a heap of merchandise. Nas is like one of those Hawks players who could cut sides open with their kicking and vision.

Pretty good call.

Almost feels like that Grant Birchall type - the side's primary distributor who doesn't really get the external accolades

Wasn't there a conspiracy that Dal Santo didn't poll votes in the last few rounds one year because they couldn't afford to pay him the bonus for a top 5 finish?

True. Surprised you need to ask.

Would have all been worth it if we had of snagged one of those two flags.

To come so close and walk away empty handed, to be followed by a SC f up and then years of compromised drafts leading to a decade in the wilderness just adds to the sombre attitude of most Saints fans.

Oh and don't forget Thommo's $400k he sued the club for unpaid holiday leave, from a job he got given by his sniffy mate and held for 6 years.
But yeah he loves the club apparently.

Wow id never heard of the cap issues

(not a boomer)

As if losing one player wouldn't have fixed them all. It's just another round of excuses for a badly run football club. We could have gone to the players and found out who wanted to stay. Pelchen had a plan to cut hard and refresh through the draft but ****ed it because the new franchises were getting most of the first rounds of multiple drafts. It was just pure stupidity. Wasting picks on spuds and spreading for multiple picks didn't help. Paying high for guys like Hickey and Longer while selling off McEvoy was one of the great acts of stupidity.

Here's the end of an Age article about the Saints wanting to draft McCartin rather than buy a KPF, it's a reflection on the salary cap issues the club had back in the early days of the Pelchen/Bains era.
"And one of the reasons that's happened is because we spent all our money on too few players. We spent it on 10 players, and it left a big gulf. We had 55 per cent of the money going to 10 players."

"More," said Bains. "Just over 60 per cent."

I know it’s easy to say now after what Geelong did last year and how badly we butchered the rebuild but we gave up too early on that core group. Even guys like Gram was booted out too early, it’s like we were looking for excuses to chop players. If we ever get a core that good again we need to hold onto it for dear life. They had plenty of good football left in them.

Hello, I have a question as am trying to help GWS list strategy going forward .
How do you guys rate Cadman compared to Phillipou as a forward. Do you see any Nick Reiwoldt like traits? Or more like Kosi?

The fact that they are even in the same conversation says it all doesn't it?

We certainly feel pretty chuffed landing a kid showing pick #1 type traits at just 17/18 years old.

Both are seemingly going to be excellent players- but it's obviously still WAAY too early to see whether they will be good or great at anything/everything.

Ps- the idea is seemingly for phillipou to be a mid, not a fwd.

Looks like he'll be a good player for you but any Roo/Kosi comparisons are probably off the mark at this stage.
Crazy what you paid for him though.
