They may need points.

But they will have a new coach as well.

Better be something pretty decent to get that pick. Imo.
I don’t pretend to be 100% across their academy situation.

But I believe they have 3 rated in the top 20 and 2 of them in the top 10

Sounds like there may be a few clubs interested. Competition is alwaysgood for the seller.
1st rounder for Howard, yeah give me a call and I will give you the lotto numbers for Saturday night

I dunno, Dunstan hit his career best form and only played 5 games for Melbourne lol. Acres and Newnes continued their mediocre careers.

Has any player left St Kilda recently and gone on to be better than when we had them? I can't see any of those names floated doing anything other than maybe 1 or 2 good games, which is probably the same outcome we'd get from them
I hear this every time I bleat about development and fair point. My suspicion is that players' first 5 years have a stronger influence on their ability that the next 5.

Gresham is a restricted free agent and their current pick is 12.

We can force a trade.

If the offer is lower then his current contract with us. Why wouldn’t we match that?

If it’s higher it’s a first round pick.
As Gresh is a RFA how about Gresh + our 2 rounder for Hawks 1st Rounder (which would be about pick 4 or 5)

If Gresh is worth an end of 1st rounder (2nd highest FA option based on what Hawks are offering) then throwing in our 2nd rounder could be close to equivalent in pts to get Hawks 1st pick ..... could maybe throw in next years 2 rounder if required ..... Hawks wouldnt be that stupid ..... would they?

You do know how free agency works?

Hickey recently.
Tom Lynch way back.
Ben McEvoy
Rhys Stanley.

Yes RFA means we can match another teams offer but if that other team is really desperate for that said player then the option could be to work out a trade for them ...... it happened with the Dangerfield trade did it not? Whereby Dangerfield was RFA and Adelaide threatened to match and therefore Geelong ended up trading for him

I rate Membrey.

I certainly wouldn’t want to throw him away.

But moving Membrey on fits with everything else I’ve mentioned especially the “strategy” part of our list management.

Just wait and see I guess.

It’s a big pool we could move on.

Gresham Membrey Howard Billings Clark Coffield

Some posters will be shitting the bed and rolling in it like when a bird dumps you and you’re heartbroken.

s**t ton of cap space too. Maybe we go in for Whitfield and improve a 3rd to a second rounder in doing so? 🤷‍♂️
Would like to keep Coff personally. Probably more worth it to take a chance and keep him, having seen what he is capable of.
Won’t get much from other clubs due to his lack of playing over the past year, I feel.

Say Carlton offer Gresh 400k
Don't match we get a late 20s pick.

Match and we could then offer to pay half or more of his contract to get their first round pick.

If the sun's pick is a top 6 pick I'd offer our future 1st and this year's 2nd, setting them up for next year and gaining more points for this year.

Sent from my CPH2145 using BigFooty.com mobile app
Or they offer a two year deal which is renegotiated after the first year, which is what Brisbane did with Daniher so that Essendon got a better compo without Brassy having to trade,

For me Membrey is surplus to requirements at age 30 and with injuries kicking in

I doubt he would have improved us this year considering he hasn't improved us in the years past

Ross also surplus and Billings as well

Thing is that their trade value is likely poor .... Membrey better than the other 2

If a 2nd rounder was offered I would be accepting before they had finished talking

Yeah yeah yeah all our players are worth peanuts and all thr other clubs' players are worth squillions, the same song every year
It's not the all our players are worth peanuts at all.

Just the ones we are happy here to trade.

If you want to get squillions you need to be trading a quality player, not a 30 year old that has been out all year.

You want squillions you need to be offering up a Steele, Marshall, Sinclair, Wilkie or one of our young guns, but no one would want to do that.

Hawks wouldn't consider that. They have the money to give him the contract to make it band one, that is much more likely than them giving up their first, but still unlikely.

Please show me where I specified a first rounder?
I’ll have the lotto numbers anyway thanks.

That’s a long bow you’re drawing.
A person is not allowed to change their mind in 14 years?

Fair enough , Ross may be of a different mindset these days.
But unless they know him they are guessing.
Meanwhile others say that Ross likes quirky defenders, based on a total of one that he took as a rookie well over a decade ago.

I would be over the moon with Band 1 but just looking at different options to move up further ..... guess it depends how desperate other clubs (like Hawks) may want him

Wrong thread and very early I know but

Jumper numbers 4 and 23 may very well be vacant in the off season. Caminiti and Sharman may fancy getting into something a bit more fashionable that their current 40-something garb.

How good would it be to have Buckets back in #23?

I think people disrespect Membrey, for a long time he's been holding down the spot of a key forward with the immense height of 188cm.
His goal rate has been right up there.
More and more he was called on to play up the ground, and he had the tank to do it, but his first instincts were those of the forward. Take the mark, go back and take the shot. That style didn't suit his work further up the ground.
Meanwhile his marking was certainly appreciated by me when he found himself in the backline.

I don't see where he sits in the team currently.
We have Pou, Owens, Sharman, Hammer, Hayes, all playing various forward roles, and Membrey has really been injured at the exact wrong time to make a case for himself.

I still don't like the disrespect he's getting, if everyone had pulled their weight like he did, we would not have been languishing at the bottom of the ladder.

I don't disagree with him going to another team if its the right move now, but like i said. Full respect for his career.

Agreed. Coffield has enormous up side but his body has failed him. So far. He needs to get on the park in the next 12 months, but I would absolutely persist with him for a little longer. The lad can really play.

But I’m not wedded on to keeping Membrey, Billings, Gresham, Clark, Paton and Jones. Happy to load up with draft picks if they help deliver a much earlier draft pick. Those players are not elite core players. Great for depth but they won’t be the driving forces to future success.

Howard must stay unless we can replace him with another similar player. He provides us with structure that we need in defence.
