Since when did age abd weight become an indication of readiness to play AFL
It was pointed out that he is currently 105kg's. Will be bigger and stronger next year too. I guess I meant that he's not some tall and skinny 18yo anymore. In my mind, clearly not in yours, he would be fine to play fwd/ruck next year for at least some of the season. That's all. Not so controversial I wouldn't have thought.

I think it's fair to say that Marshall is an elite ruck when judged by his own stats, but has very poor chemistry with our midfielders. I don't know how they assess how a hitout is "too advantage" but I would hazard a guess that the quality of Marshall's HTAs are on the very poor end of the scale.

It creates a bit of a dilemma because he is clearly a very good ruck and can only be picked in that position, but at the same time, he doesn't bring the best out of midfield.
Marshall is excellent around the ground, almost another mid in the centre square & tackles well but not a great tap ruckman.

But a bit of perspective, quite a few better tap ruckman out there but they have no influence around the ground.

Who is the complete package - Gawn - then who? English (though until this season the knock on him was his tap work was no good). Maybe a few rungs down - McInerney, Jackson maybe, sort of? Sure I’ve forgotten someone.

Very happy to stick with Ro - excellent player - but when he has a rest we need to find someone who is competitive in there - Hammer and Owens were monstered last week.

Again Marshall while not the best tap ruck is a bloody excellent player.

Our clearance problems are more related to our mids, not his ruck work.

Power, Lions, Pies, and Blues all seem to do pretty well with "average" tap ruckman.

The difference is the midfielders. We have no natural clearance machines, Gresham is the closest but he's a shitty kick and gets limited time in there because of that.

I wonder how much is due to Marshall and much due to our system at clearances. It’s been noticeable through the year and definitely in the final that other teams seem to clear the ball with one or two quick handballs that end end up with a guy in space who can then pass to a leading forward. We just seem to grab it and kick it blindly, whether it’s Marshall, Gresham, Crouch or Steele.
Its partly on the players but has to partly on the midfield/stoppage coach.

We probably have the thinnest midfield in the league in both top end talent and actual depth. Then on top of that we've had a thing for spread runners over one position inside mids since Richo's time.

If you don't carry specialist extractors you have to concede clearance and win it back while pressuring every midfield touch to cause errors.

You have to be good enough . He’s no where near good enough right now

He's very average at ruck craft though. I thought Briggs has some of Marshall's ability to take the ball himself but also had better tap work. His taps seem to hit their mids better. Gawn for example force feeds his mids. Marshall's go towards our mids but they have no real power or direction.
Our mids are passive and don't attack the ball hard or fast enough when it is leaving the rucks hands, so it does look like the opposition mids are getting all the taps, as they're first to the ball.

Nah people see the word "ruck" in a post about Heath and then automatically talk as if the only thing he can then happen is that he takes over Marshalls role full time.

Campbell played as the main ruck at Sandy because we need Heath to be a forward/ruck, not to takeover from Marshall.

Darcy Parish and Lachie Neale average 3.6 and 3.5 centre clearances per game.
Interestingly this year Paddy Dow averaged 2.4 which is better than StKilda's best , Steele with 2.1 ( = 27th in the AFL ).
Crouch averaged 2, and Hayes had 2 in his only game.

Marshall averaged 1.5, the same as Seb Ross.

Agree. Pretty clearly most are talking fwd/ruck, not 1st ruck. But if some think he won't be ready to play that role in the seniors next year then that's fine too. Another pre-season into him and he's going to be quite a unit.

C'mon we surely can't bring in a player on the cheap that'll help us in an area that we desperately need can we?

That's not the saints thing to do.

Just stick to the draft

And draft flankers

On CPH2145 using BigFooty.com mobile app

Free agent and irony of it all he was the draft pick we gave up in 2018 that netted us bytel

I think that pick was part of the Hannebery deal.

We traded the pick from Sydney for two later picks from Melbourne.
Melbourne drafted Jordan, and Saints got Bytel and Parker.

Meanwhile later in the draft ...McInerney, and Koschitski

Clark, Coffield, McKenzie, Jones and Gresham are all OOC.

Depending on the media outlet, I’ve heard various reports that have each of them staying or each of them leaving.

In order of likelihood, how many re-sign with the club?
