Nas genuinely crucified not to be in the AA squad. Would be blowing up if he played for Carlton or Collingwood.
Nas's 2nd half of the year was elite but a slow start (understandable in a new position) would have kept him out of the conversation.

If he can start next year as he finished this one, he will be on the radar of everyone.

It would also help if he did some media work, they love talking about players that talk to them.

Very very curious to see what goes down with Dougal, key backs are so hot right now
Sounds as though he’s happy to stay. Given he’s contracted I think if someone wants him they’ll have to cough up something significant. Having said that, if that situation were to arise I think the club would encourage him to ‘explore his options’.

I’m happy for him to stay out of the media. Who cares what his profile is as long as he keeps improving? I’m not sure he’s the type that would want the extra attention. Owens and Pou on the other hand would lap it up.

Bit late to the party but I honestly don’t mind the thought of the Shiel acquisition if it’s for peanuts. I remember watching him last year in his rematch against the Swans after they Parker was giving him some flack about shirking a contest, and his game against them later in the year was A grade.

Makes me wonder if he just needs better management and motivation? Maybe being offered as trade bait and playing under Ross will give him a bit of that?

Also, a 1st rounder for Gresh would be unreal. His kicking is a limitation, will always be a good player with flaws, just never gonna elevate passed his early output, much like Billings.

The unique genius of Shiel is he has a beautiful looking kicking action / technique but often can't hit the side of a barn.
Normally players have obvious visible kicking technique issues when they are such regular bad kicks.

I don’t necessarily think we are guaranteed to make the finals even if we keep all the current players on the list. We just made it! I think the coaching group did an amazing job and we overachieved slightly.

I do believe we won’t achieve top 4 or anything serious with the current list though. We need to be bold in our assessment of player value and the way we can get top end talent into our squad and especially midfield.

It won’t be one player exit or trade that does that or looks that great in isolation, but maybe the some of all parts at the end of trade period. Let’s just wait and see how that looks at the end of the trade and draft period.

Free agency and trade isn’t just about paying overs it’s about paying overs for the right players that drive standards, leadership and are difference makers that can help you take the jump to top 4.

As we've found, the really top players don't often leave their clubs in FA. Also harder to attract them unless you are already in the window and can offer heaps of cash as well.

To me we've done a lot of list damage by trying to be too clever instead of taking the high picks to the draft and trading in a the fringe players to plug holes and hopefully with a decent amount of footy and improvement ahead of them.

List management shouldn't be that complicated and rarely do you get anywhere quicker by rushing it. We are now in a position where 70% of the build is done and we have a good mix of youth and experience.

Not sure going back to the draft in bulk is a good idea. We really need high end players but the chances of finding a kid who comes in and dominates in their first few seasons is so incredibly low once you get outside of the top few picks. Even inside the top few it's as rare as ****.

We probably should be keeping Gresham and Howard best 22 types and pushing out guys like Clark who are borderline after a lot of years. They could probably be related by a kid and get near identical output.

Dow and Henry make sense because both have upside potential and should cost FA.

A couple of players if they’re the right ones can transform how teams play.

Sometimes it's not even that, sometimes shit just clicks and sides gel but I've waited so long for this flower to bloom that I've given up hoping.

Nas is a quiet achiever. He has a very calm understated manner. He's one that just looked at home in his second year and like he'd always been there. He's the type that will one day all of a sudden catch people's attention but after already killing it for ages. He's probably the quickest to come on player we've had in decades. He's already a top 6 player on our list and looks unlimited in potential.

I doubt even many St Kilda fans backed him to make the squad, so crucified seems a bit over the top.

He had a very good year for a 2nd year player though. If he can continue that 2nd half of the year form maybe next year.

I thought he was good all year. If he plays like he did in the finals next year he will grab attention. SEN have a finals promo and it's the call of his goal against the Giants. He's starting to get noticed.

We are not pushing Gresham out.
He is leaving for a large pay rise.

Can someone remind me what pick we got from the compo for Goddard again?

Technically pick 13 but along with our natural first round pick we did a whole lot of trading to get Tom Lee and Tom Hickey as well as picks for Murdoch, Wright and White.

I agree top A grade players are difficult to get in free agency. In tends to be solid B graders that fit a specific need like McStay, McKay etc.

I think you can be aggressive and bold in the decision you make you just need to do it with conviction and get it right. Look at the tough calls and bold trade/draft activity Collingwood, Melbourne and Brisbane have done over the last 3-4 years to get in the position they are in.

I think our issue over the last 5-10 years has been playing it safe with trade and draft decisions. We drafted HB’s or HF’s instead of genuine mids because most of our picks have been 8-20 instead of top 8 and we kept drafting people with low athletic/running ability.

I don’t think we do have 70% of our next premiership side. We were miles off top 4 in my opinion and limped into the eight. I think we need to be thinking past next year for our planning. We have a lot of the current side that I think will be done in 12 months. Howard, Membrey, Crouch, Webster, Wood and then probably Steele and Hill in the twilight.

So I don’t mind us holding substandard output of our previous higher picks like Gresh, Clark, Coffield, Billing’s and co to account and if they want to leave we try and negotiate the best possible outcome to then potentially bundle it up to break into that top end of the draft.

I think that's assuming that the wants out. If we wanted to I'm pretty sure we could match his offer at a new club or put something close that would keep him interested. Haven't seen anything to suggest that he's not happy to stay. The club have been looking to get him out for compo but only if it's high enough. We are actively shopping and letting players explore to get high picks in the draft. Been pretty open about it.

We aren't that old. Howard is only 27. He'd have 5 years left. Ross, Webster, Hill, Wood and Campbell are our 30 year olds and most probably go until about 32 to 34 these days if they are any good. Collingwood is approaching a cliff with most of their best players around 30 or over. We are a young side still and getting younger.

Gresham is the only one with any value out of those guys which is why we are rolling the dice on him. Coffield and Clark are too old to be worth much now. Probably like Stocker they'd get picked up with a late pick or DFA. Doubt any make our suite of picks more attractive. Your best hope is trade one for a later pick and use it on Dow types.

Gresham had a bad year and is at his lowest value now. He has played some fantastic footy for us. The disrespect he gets on here is a totally OTT.

Richmond won three flags with a pretty solid but pedestrian list and a superstar match winner. If Owens or Phillipou can become a star player in that mould we all of a sudden look much closer to a flag. Get into the top 4 and you have a ticket in the lottery with decent odds. We weren't miles off that this year. Improve 20% and we are getting closer.
