I laugh when I see people want to jettison Bytel, Connelly etc. and bring in Constable, Mathieson? No club in their right mind is going to remove deadwood and replace it with deadwood.

Word from the club has been the focus will be on the Draft this year. So you'd suspect a relatively quiet trade period unless we can lure a Liam Henry across from Fremantle. It may well be limited to Gresham out - 2nd round pick in, use that pick on Henry or take it to the Draft.
100%

Ross has talked about kicking all year and somehow Dow, Constable and Mathieson are getting discussed

Lyon did a very unsentimental cull of guys who were injury prone last time he was in charge. If you can't get on the park he's pretty brutal.
Thats unfortunate with Coffield since he does have such big upside and is still only 23. In terms of value, another club could get an absolute steal by picking him up.

But it also might not be completely our choice given he is out of contract.

I can’t agree that we need midfield depth. We need quality, if we get some actual quality then some of our first picked mids turn into depth and that’s when we’ll actually be getting somewhere. The time for the Fiorinis and Constables of the world finished 10 years ago.
Agree only one player can have the ball in hand at any one time believe it or not 😉 and we need a couple of those to be elite. Things happen when elite players use the ball from time to time as opposed to good players all the time

Well they might but they are also taking a gamble as well. Same as Nathan Freeman and Hanners. Once you've lost 2 season to injury it's a dice roll. I'd rather keep him than sell for loose change though.

Trade or de list for form yes , but now that he’s fit and playing and showing something would be silly to let him walk for FA . Yet pay thru the nose for another top 10 pick with some potential. Talk about weakening your hand .

Based off his brief VFL return, he is far too good for that level. Out of the possible gambles this off season, he's one I'd be wanting to backing.

Let's just hope we can also bring in some high end talent and don't cut back too far.

We dont have a choice. He's out of contract so can leave regardless of whether we want to keep him or not.

We need more cream. We have plenty of "adequate" players.

Just bringing in another adequate player of known ability just displaces another adequate player, unless it specifically addresses a particular lack in our list. So it will achieve little to help make us a Top 4 team.

We are all desperately hoping that Owens and Pou will become gun mids, but they may not. I have no doubt that they will both be longterm very good players for us. I am just not sure where they will play most of their career. If they do not, then our midfield will remain our Number 1 weakness.

So to me a potential gun mid/s is our main need at present. Very hard to get though!

We also need better ball movement. Too many of our otherwise competent/adequate players are let down by their use of the ball. Take Gresh's last game, he got the goals, but his field kicking was poor. If we can get a few more good ball-users into our team in addition to Sincs and Nas it will help a lot. This in itself should have won us more games this season.

We don't have a choice, but we certainly have influence.
Unless he feels like we have butchered his injury management (maybe?); then you would expect it will come down to how much (or little) we are prepared to back him in (in terms of guaranteed salary and years) to get past his injuries.

Any trades we do are more likely going to be for draft picks than players if we want to hit the draft.

Until it's actualised it's just hope. Nas is putting himself up with the best in our side this year. King is probably the other that is proving himself to be more than just potential. They are actualised talent. Otherwise it's exactly as we thought about Coffield and Clark. Promise can turn to Gresham pretty quickly. Toce deserves credit because I think we have turned a corner in drafting but until they show more than promise they aren't anything bankable.

Chito was brilliant at times this year too, he's dropped away a bit but the contested numbers at least point to a high level player.

So Newcombe is actualised as a Brownlow medal winner?
Chito
Naz
Pou
Hammer and Sharman
have all shown more than promise. I don't know why you undersell our young player and continually oversell players like Newcombe who is very good but no better than some of our kids.
He may well win a Brownlow but I heard that about Dal Santo his whole career.

Anyway as I said the Brownlow is diminished because the umpires can only see midfielder.

So Twomey saying Carlton now unlikely for Gresh but linking the other MCG tenants and clubs who play there often. Essendon Richmond Hawthorn

Clark membrey Howard Coffield Billings all mentioned the other week now Twomey has mentioned Paton

Circles back to what I told you all 2 weeks ago 😉

He also asked the question of if we really want to get back into the draft... would we trade the skipper?

He did.

But it was hypothetical and no I haven’t heard anything like that.

It’s the same group of players I’ve mentioned. Blokes who are all individually talented and never took the next step(s)

That's a given. Of course we need to keep bringing in high end talent but realistically that's high picks and trades or FA. If we let go of 4 depth and starting mids -Jones, Hunter, Leo and Bytel and wings HBFs in Coff and Dmac, we could really struggle with even fielding a best 22 let alone depth. Ross is over 30 and staring to get injuries too. Gresham looks gone too.

We need some mature depth, some semi developed talent that is ready to step up and some kids. Getting a layer of solid middling talent is good management....except when you pay crazy capital away to get it. I don't think guys like Mathieson are that far off the quality of the guys that we paid huge amounts for not that long ago. If you can grab some for free apart from humble wages it's good business. Unload Gresham and move sideways for example.

Carlton did well picking up Acres, he's been huge in their turn around. He's a weapon at the moment and cost nothing.

Newcombe is actualised as a guy who's dominating the midfield in a fast rising side....most of it seems off the back of him. You obviously didn't watch his last couple of games. He had 40 possessions and goal against the Dogs who have one of the best midfields in footy and he dominated them like they were his bitch. Looked like Dangerfield at his prime.

If I was a betting man I'd get on him for a Brownlow next year because he's one of the most exciting young mids in footy. This kid is going to be a star.

Nas is actualised too because he's owning a spot and in our best handful of players every week. It's not hard to understand. Newcombe is already a dominant midfield in the AFL competition at 22. He's just jumped Noah Anderson (the other absolute shooting star young mid) into the top 20 player rankings.

Pretty shit draft. I reckon we'll go after existing players unless we are trying to move up into GCs picks with a pile of later ones.

This is why the talk of letting selling off good players for draft picks is concerning for me.

We can't cut all the depth on top of the best 23 players rumoured to be leaving, fill out list with more draft picks (from a draft lacking depth no less) and still be competitive moving forward.

If we lose Coffield for anything less than a FRDP I’d be livid.

Really want him to stay and get a run at it, has so much upside. Was a key player in our only final’s win in a decade. Only 23 years old.
Prepared to be livid.

No one is giving a first rounder for someone who hasn't played for 2 years. We'd be more looking at a pick in the 50s.
