The whole don't give me an offer until i have explored my other offers crap they threw out in the press was lies. Was always leaving.

Pretty sure it was very mutual.

To be honest. They Brad Crouch’d us

A deal in the vicinity of $600,000 – $650,000 a season, plus incentives,

It's been mentioned a couple of times that Gresh could be our version of Crouch.

Doubt we will match. Unless that is where the Shiel part of the deal appears. But even then I'd be suggesting it would be Shiel and a 2nd rounder for Gresh. And that is a fair way off Pick 13.

This was a good graphic on this topic

We were lauded for this in 2020 when most of our top 10 B&F were traded in.

Gresham on $800k. Imagine the stiffy he had when his manager called him telling him he’d negotiated $800k a year for an at the time 21 year old forward pocket that had barely ventured into the midfield.
Fmd hats off to the agent, but the whole bullshit about paying 95% of the cap has led to Gresham being to most overpaid person in the country.

The rule isn't there to keep teams competitive.

It was driven by the AFLPA to ensure teams like WCE and North couldn't lowball their players while they are s**t.

It was a duality of club A could afford players A-C, so they paid them to jump ship and they did. Club B that had half those players and club C shrugged shoulders and plucked player F that was shit and player G that was great. Only he then got bigger money and pissed off to club A later also.

So a minimum spend TPP was envisioned so you can no longer monopolise just money to lure people, huzzah, progress is made for equality! Lookit the loyalty!

Then the AFLPA came along all "oi, how dare you call player F shit, he has a family all the way to WGAF" so in CBA with the threat of unionisation, the AFL and AFLPA went "you have to pay F a sizeable amount cause of his hurt feelings" and they did.

Later in this story, a new AFL came along, it looked at the previous instance, looked at the current player O for old fart, old fart wanted to be Y and young again so they envisioned free agency, so you can promise the elixir of immortality and morph this narrative into some wushu cinema shit with a dragon or monkey or both.

That same person then decided "what this needs is protracted instances" and threw darts, killed some bugs due to shocking aim at a board, stabbed a staffer with one, and decided to forgo the darts and just go with a random allotment of when to amend a playing list during an entire month. They considered it a great job until they saw the medical bill.

Tldr: Both to not lowball people and to stop others from just paying double and going "yoink" to consolidate talent with money.

Hold the faith

Gresham 800k a year just to retain him when he’d already been drafted to the club. You’d think he was the best mid in the comp. FFS, no wonder we didn’t lose any talent over the last 4 or 5 years… they’ve all been getting paid a kings ransom.

Dude, lay off the uncle dougs for a night !!

Can anyone translate this for me????

Lmao the salaries always get a few fired up. Rejoice, you lot, you’ll have someone new to whine about soon!

Alan Joyce could afford a car worth that much every year with 5% to 10% of his bonus. Probably a weeks wages for a decent premier league player. People lose their shit over wages. Hanners got that for sitting in rehab for years. It's just money that you have to use.

He looked the most deserving at that point in time. Like signing Owens to a big contract now. If he came good it's a bargain. If he stalls or injured it looks irresponsible. When you lack stars you pay GOPs like stars.

All those clubs did it differently
agree
Pies went down quickly and shot up even quicker,

Though Collingwoods's down year was really an aberration. Call it the Buckley Effect.

H&A Ladder Position
2023 1
2022 4
2021 17
2020 8
2019 4
2018 3
2017 13

the father sons very much helped

Yes 3 really good FSs did very much help them.

The Pies have also managed to attract a lot of good talent from other clubs.

And then their "top-up" last season was done at exactly the right stage with their list, and they got in the right players.

Collingwood had injuries especially most of they best backs that year. They struggled to field their best and dropped away.

Good on anyway getting as much as they can the bigger concern is the people at club who are given the money out at the time
