As the smoke clears and screams die out, Hunter Clark and Ben Paton slowly rise out of the bushes and, exchanging relieved looks, creep ever forward.

Whilst McKenzie is left to pick up his own crutches, realises he can't and starts clawing at the ground, fingernails white with tension and exhaustion, gasping for sweet air, as his poor legs flop feebly behind him; birds prey circling him from above in anticipation. The light of the sun, though not hot...blinds his eyes. McKenzie, determined to the last, cries in anguish.
"Wait guys...I'm also here."
Clark and Paton exchange looks. Paton imploring Clark to go back and help with their fallen comrade.
Clark, eyes hazy but full of steely resolve lights up a beadie and inhales it's god awful smoke.
"Do what you want Pato...I signed a two year extension but narry two weeks ago"
Paton stares at his friend curiously, looking behind Clark as McKenzie perseveres, sweat upon his brow, slowing and tremulously inching his way forward to what he believes will be both salvation and redemption.
" But why...why were you hiding in the bushes." Paton asks, voice quivering.
"I wasn't hiding...it's just where I sleep sometimes."

* Slow work day for me.

You don’t think we’d have looked better in that final with Billings playing instead of Pou or windy who were completely out of their depth?

We’re still paying the contract so what do we gain? One more spot from the VFL pool.
Short term I agree. But playing Billings wouldn’t have been the difference between winning and losing verses GWS.

RTB playing the long game. Didn’t see him as current best 22 or future best 22.

We gain paying a rookie 100k and getting games and gym sessions into him rather than a few extra 100k for an older bloke switching between rehab and reserves.

Richo: Nah yeah. Jack is gonna be a rule bewdy.

He he is.

Hey Jack young lad, come over and meet your new team mate, Steven May.

The list managers only come out at night, mostly...

He’s not best 22
He’s injury prone
He’s on a fair whack of a contract
Turns 29 next year
Wants a fresh start

Take the emotion out of it and it’s a sensible trade.

too much sense in here

legacy contract is the issue. moving some of it on whilst we can get something for him is a good deal.

id rather him gone and pay some of his contract than have him at sandy with the whole of his contract.

Actually just looking at this, we've closed the book on two fairly undistinguished off-seasons.

2013 off-season: Billings, Dunstan, Acres, Templeton, Weller, Holmes, Bruce, Delaney, Longer, Savage

DONE with Billings leaving

2015 off-season: Gresham, White, Rice, O'Kearney, Coughlan, Carlisle, Freeman

DONE with Gresham leaving

And now down to only two remaining from a couple of other off-seasons.

2017 off-season: Clark, Coffield, Clavarino, Paton, Langlands, Austin

2018 off-season: King, Bytel, Parker, Hind, Young, Wilkie, Marsh, Rowe, Mayo, Hannebery, Kent, Alabakis

Ah the memories.

With regard to paying Billings' salary, it could be a token amount we are paying.

He still had two years on his contract so chances were he would under perform in 2024 before coming good in 2025 - the year he needs a new contract.
Another consideration is, getting rid of his contract, frees up the bulk of his salary which could be used to reward others and possibly fend of Adelaide and Port trying to poach our SA stars

We might have looked better, but the development of Pou and Windy was far more important.

Those are 2 lads who are the future, not the past.

The list spot billings had is worth more to upgrade Mason Wood to senior list and then get a new player in 2024.

Ah the memories.
I know it's cherry picking but jeebus thats some ordinary years

Recently I took a whole section of stuff we'd accumulated to the rubbish tip. Kids toys with a bit missing, clothes that were a bit torn, random things that you buy because you yhink it will be handy but never use.

Most of it still functioned more or less ok, but not to the point you could sell it, and even if you gave it away you might get a bit of a dirty look from the receiver. It was just clogging up our garage as it had been for years, so we made the decision to get rid of it.

I went to the tip and there were queues of people doing the same. Things thst were a bit old and shabby, stuff that probably some more unfortunate people in society would be happy to take, but there were none of those people around. It was a bit sad to see all the waste, but that's life. You deal with it or reject society and become a womble or something.

As hard as it was to write all the cost of buying that stuff off and the years of holding onto it in futile hope, it felt good getting that space in the garage back and starting anew.

I think Jack Billings is the one player of the few we've said goodbye to this year who symbolises this for me. I hope someone somewhere finds a use for them all. I'm happy for our club to be rid of a lot of the "meh" section of our list, I'd have got rid of many more truth be told but we must be sensible and not do a North Melbourne - despite the benefits they got. Plus there's always next year!

Gresham
Coffield
Billings
Bytel
Peris
Connolly
Adams

A few players we will still need to find replacements for unless something surprises us next year
Clark
Howard
Ross
Jones
Paton
McKenzie
Highmore
Hayes
Cordy
Membrey
Allison

Plus Webster, Crouch, Steele, Sinclair, Marshallare all going to be around 29-30 this time next year, need to get cracking with the next gen.

As for the concept that Gresh, JB and Coff "wanted to leave" - maybe. But only because it suited us. JB in particular has had very a comfy career so far, if he's suddenly decided he's desperate to get out, why should that possibly be? If you look on his back you'll probably see the palm prints of RTB. Probably fair enough too. That takes me back to the start of my post.

God there's some names I hadn't thought about in a while there. Wasn't NOK gonna be a gun just needed some size? I don't even remember coughlan...

I suppose 2014 has Sincs and 2016 has battle and Marshall so those years will always at least have one win attachéd.
