Yep, and I’m further towards the ‘dislike’ end of the spectrum when it comes to ROB

Realistically we should be targeting two or even three rucks next season, especially if ROB dips in FA and assuming Strachan’s delisted - one or two in the 23-25 bracket (one can be a delistee if we pick two), and one draftee

I think you atew right. We will be chasing at least two and maybe even three as O'Brien will go and so will Strachan. The only positive with Draper is he doesn't cost any draft picks.

Not following here but is there any chance we snag Harry Boyd tonight?

No. We're done.

Our night is just going to be matching the Tyler Welsh bid if and when it comes.

Bickley was bassically saying this morning how we couldn't get any more list spots due to everyone being contracted. That and landing all the free agents we were after and Tex wanting to go around again.

Surely that is the issue and its all related. We gave too many guys a year more than they should of got. It wasn't an external force that made us sign everyone up. It was poor list management.

Let's wait and see how successful their rebuild is, before declaring it to be the ideal model. Their list now closely reflects that which Gold Coast had in their formative years, and they still haven't played their first final 13 years later.

Richmond may well have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

Let's not forget that Adelaide jettisoned a lot of players too. We just chose to keep a small core of experienced players, around which we could build our team of youngsters. Richmond no longer have that core to build around.
Going to be a fascinating watch. I think they might not win a game next year. Maybe the year after as well.
I guess we will get an answer to that old debate - about how totally bottoming out breeds a losing culture etc... or if stacking the team with talent is enough.
Good on Richmond for going all in.

Absolutely.

A good club would have made sure Smith didn't make it to his trigger. A great club would have traded some fringe guys. We did neither and restricted ourselves because of it. And it's not the first year we have done it.

It's frustrating to even be talking about it.
Good offseason overall though.

Richmond showing how to do a proper rebuild. Move out the guys that have currency, but won't be there for the next premiership push. We would have kept Baker, played him midfield, signed him for 5 years and celebrated his B&F wins, all while screwing ourselves over.

In fairness, this is what Kangaroos tried.

I’ll admit they didn’t get anywhere near the returns Richmond did, but they went down trading anyone that wasn’t going to be there for their next premiership.

It’s not always that simple.

Richmond can probably endure being bottom next year and the year after. But year 3? Year 4? Players will get sick of losing and good ones will leave and fail to attract FAs. No one knows if their draftees will kick on.

They could be competing very soon like GWS or they could never dig themselves out of the hole like Gold Coast.

Then you better convince Port to take him because he wants to come back to South Australia, him and his brothers were on a brother's trip up in the NT a few weeks ago and he misses his family and getting to hang out with them regularly.

Essendon's offer would have to be life changing to get him to stay and I don't think they are that fussed with him any more
Does that mean ours will be lifechanging?

Are we going to overpay?

I wouldn't say that. They still have Taranto, Hopper, Lynch, Vlaustin, Prestia, Balta and Short.

Something some of us mentioned very early in the year

You actually couldn't make up how stupid it was.
Play him past his trigger, then proceed to drop him for the rest of the season because clearly not up to it.
It was deliberate, they knew exactly what they were doing by activating Smith's trigger clause.

No Club could be that stupid, surely. :drunk:

Walker - arguable we needed to re-sign him or move to rookie list
Berry - it was good he hadnt signed and then said he was exploring options - then we decided to open the door back for him
Smith - nuff said

Burgess,Schoenberg - are they really going to be better than a developing ruck who looks as good as Doddy

That's a lie. This was our out of contract players in December of 2023

Contracted until end of 2024
Brodie Smith (trigger for 2025)
Lachlan Sholl
Sam Berry
Brayden Cook
Ned McHenry
Ben Keays
Lachlan Gollant
Patrick Parnell (R)
Mitchell Hinge
Elliot Himmelberg
Hugh Bond
Taylor Walker
Rory Sloane
Will Hamill (R)
James Borlase (R)

A few more ruthless calls and we have the list spots

I don't think we will be trying to get back in to get Dodson because the club plans on Sam Draper being a Crow by this time next year.
Geez, I hope not as he would be a downgrade.

even if that was true, that's no reason to not get a developing ruck.

We've waited so long that we now need to get both a mature age stop gap, and a quality developing ruckman that will take 4-5 pre-season to develop.

Will be interesting, as I think there could potentially be a ton of list turnover next year

Walker, Smith, Strachan, Burgess, Schoenberg very likely to go

Murphy, Bond on thin ice

Milera, Crouch, ROB, Taylor could seek moves, if they aren’t getting games/know they won’t get games in 2026/want to study in VIC (ROB)

Definitely could fit in three rucks if there’s enough list turnover

Yup, and more importantly, too scared to give underperforming, but talented kids the flick. Like, I get the Peatling deal mostly came out of nowhere, but that should be a position which costs you a fourth selection when you've got a FS lined up. I also get some players do find a way to save their career from the scrapheap, looking towards Sholl and Bond this year, but even then, it smacks of poor management.

The Cook contract is the standout egregious one. That kid has not improved one iota in four years of being on a list.
