I'm still into paying Burgess out and grabbing Dodson. It has to be done early as I can see Port getting him at 33. It would be stupid of them, as they already have a strong ruck collection but it would be just like them.
The Bulldogs would obviously be the target for a trade, but I don't think we have enough to interest them. If Dodson slips past Port and the Bulldogs then Essendon might be happy to move pick 39 for three F3rds.

I'm still staggered by North giving up their future first. All but guaranteed to be a top 5 pick. Monumentally stupid.
I posted on their board that I actually think it may not be the disaster it seems on the face of it and here is why

They got the Richmond F2 - likely to be the first pick on night 2 of the draft and they have their own F2. Its a draft with a lot of NGA kids, academy kids and F/S's and its very likely sides will be looking to bank points and North are well set to capitalise there and should be able to buy back into the 1st round and maybe at a good point. SO if that happens, the cost for Whitlock might end up being their F2 and a swap of F1's. This was the draft to be in and next years is said to be weaker because of the limited access to players compared to this year. So strategically i might not be a big deal especially if North do the unexpected and climb out of the bottom 5. I actually think their top end kids are going to be very good and they will bat very deep in midfield so why not next year (they must be thinking).

It's too late
We cannot delist Burgess now , the deadline has passed

Burgess has already been delisted, along with Schoenberg.

What we can't do is delist additional players, such as Brodie Smith.

We have committed to re-drafting Burgess in the RD. What is proposed is reneging on that commitment, and paying out his 2025 salary in the 2024 salary cap. This may or may not be possible, both in terms of reneging on our commitment and the salary cap.

I'm more staggered no-one else took this deal until the last 1st round pick. Sydney took an unknown when they could have traded with North and still took that player using their latter pick.

Tigers got multiple picks in what could be a Super Draft in 2024 and almost a certainty will have ~two Top 5 picks in 2025.

You’ve bought our BS media spin as well! Owies also cost two late picks and we would have got pick 45 regardless. Would have much rathered Smith or Draper. Desperate for elite midfielders and we draft a HBF, I’m sure you can relate to that.

Well done for holding your nerve and taking Draper, he’s the surest thing in the draft to make it as a very good AFL player.

Dodson still on the board and Keane still not yet upgraded… you know what to do, Vader will love it.
Just curious, who do you think the Eagles would have taken at 3 if they still had the pick?

Even then we are stuck aren't we? From what I understand, we have also committed to upgrading Keane to the main list, so not using a rookie pick on Burgess will only open a rookie spot. Unless we also go back on our deal with Keane.

Bottom line is, we could have been in a position to grab Dodson, but instead have limited our options through poor list management.

Richmond showing how to do a proper rebuild. Move out the guys that have currency, but won't be there for the next premiership push. We would have kept Baker, played him midfield, signed him for 5 years and celebrated his B&F wins, all while screwing ourselves over.

I believe this is accurate. I guess there's an additional factor in whether or not we can cancel Keane's rookie upgrade - probably not, given that the paperwork was probably lodged several weeks ago.

Let's wait and see how successful their rebuild is, before declaring it to be the ideal model. Their list now closely reflects that which Gold Coast had in their formative years, and they still haven't played their first final 13 years later.

Richmond may well have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

Let's not forget that Adelaide jettisoned a lot of players too. We just chose to keep a small core of experienced players, around which we could build our team of youngsters. Richmond no longer have that core to build around.

Hawthorn and Brisbane are the barometers of a rebuild at the moment.

Well there’s still a few hours left, Brodie could have a change of heart and do the right thing and choose to retire/be pressured to retire… 🤣

Hahahaha, Brodie would go full ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ if someone at the club had even suggested that to him

If Smith retired today, the best we could do would be to place him on the Inactive List, replacing him via the PSSP or MSD. We would not be able to replace him in the ND, PSD or RD.

I disagree. There's a reason we've been stuck with Murphy and mchenry for years

Yup. They're cheap (and every team needs to sacrifice a position or two for salary cap reasons), will provide a solid level of production (primarily in the transition or pressure aspects, though you're now low enough in the depth chart you're likely not getting both to a high level - unless you hit the jackpot with a rookie/low draft picks) and you can plug them into a position that can be hard to get value out of (6th-7th forward). We all instinctively understand how difficult it is, and how low-impact a 6th-7th forward has, by the reaction you'll see whenever Hamish mentions someone can play half forward. For most, it's a genuine career killer.

Guys like Murphy and McHenry (and all role players) survive until your needs change. McHenry became a depth player the moment we couldn't continue with Keays as a midfielder, as it changed up the needs of our forward mix. The same thing will happen with Murph. He found a niche in 2023 when we were a high-flying offense as the only thing Adelaide needed from the bottom slots were guys who can run all day, be tough and get out of the way of the stars. With Tex diminishing, the recruitment of AVB and the struggles of our half back line in 2024, our needs have changed and Murphy will again (and probably for the last time) fall out of the best 22 slots.

Nah that sounds too harsh...we would never have done that.
