So we needed a whole department of well paid Australia wide recruiting staff to select the obvious choice at pick 4, a preselected father-son at 59 and 2 rookies who are already on the books - a job that any poster here could have done for free by watching a couple of You Tube videos.

Well, they didn't know they would trade in 3 players who would fit in the best 22 but yes we should have delisted 2 more players so they can "earn" the money for the work they've done all season and draft 2 more youngsters.

Just nine new players taken in the rookie draft, out of 24 selections, what are we even doing here?
Interesting Powa took mid Tom Cochrane in the rookie draft while his father is going hell for leather trying to get the far far better younger brother Dougie eligible for their NGA Academy.

If you were a bit sceptical, you would almost suggest the two are related...
Pretty transparent and manipulative by Port

6 others though walk straight through via club Academies, Jayden Nguyen (Essendon), Benny Barrett (Powa), Malakai Champion (WCE), Ricky Mentha (Demons), Josiai Delana (Giants), Lachie Gulbin (Suns)

C'mon Wayne - are they y'all's or talks?
Bloody phones, i rarely use them because of the auto-correct ….. and it sneakily does it after i press the reply button

Burn all the bloody things

Anyone with 5 or more invites from clubs goes to the AFL combine

Anyone with 1-4 invites goes to the state combines
Hi Macca19,

As a highly respected Power fan and SANFL watcher, is it possible to get your views on Draper? (Not comparing to,JHF haha) but how do you rate him in all honesty?

Just a Draft comment ….. it always amazes me Clubs who end up with multiple picks late in Drafts

ESS have been notorious culprits …. COLL and WB in this draft
You invariably end up with list cloggers

To our credit, whilst we don’t take large numbers of draftees usually …. we don’t take large numbers of draft backend players like others
We leave our list cloggers on our list...

Burgess
Straughan
Smith

Another pick would have been handy....

Doesn't look like it. They didn't even take R. Burgoyne or Montgomery as a FS.
Yeah they did, Benny Barrett walks straight onto their rookie list as he wasn't taken in the National draft, similar to Edwards and Jarman for us only difference was they were F/S's and Barrett is NGA with a New Guimean heritage.

I thought we had to make a live pick to confirm it, but I guess not.
Hasn't been the case for several years.

These days it's just a formality, which happens between the ND & PSD. The paperwork had to be lodged a while ago, but they didn't bother with any media releases until the upgrad took effect today.

Meh... I'll give you Smith, whose contract was extended when he was stupidly allowed to reach the trigger point this season (at which point his form was beyond abysmal). Strachan & Burgess were already contracted.

More concerning were the decisions to re-sign Cook & Berry, who could have been delisted with no complications. Cook in particular is every bit the list clogger that Burgess/Strachan/Smith are.

The pick run-down on the AFL app didn't include him in Port's haul so it seemed as if he was overlooked, but that's on me for taking their word for it.

The point is very fringe players like Strachan should be given 1 year deals so we have flexibility & don't get caught out like this year.

That would be smart list management!

Strachan wasn't a "very fringe" player back in mid-2023, when the contract was signed. He was doing an excellent job of holding down a necessary role, and there was no reason to think that his circumstances would change as much as they did in the next 12 months. We'd previously had Graham & Lowden in that role, and Strachan was doing a much better job than his predecessors - hence the longer contract.

Burgess was traded in as depth coverage for our KPDs and KPFs. Traded players are almost always given 2 year contracts, or longer for quality players, particularly when they are traded to a club in a different state. There's no contract or list management negligence here - a talent identification failure (maybe), but not list management.

At the end of the day, the list mathematics got thrown into chaos when we landed all 3 of Cumming/ANB/Peatling. They were obviously only expecting to land 2 of the 3, and lost all flexibility when the 3rd player committed.

Lol, Strachan has always been very fringe. You couldn't get any more very fringe! There is absolutely no need to give him more than 1 year deals.

Same goes for other players like Borlase.

There will always be players like this on the list who should be getting 1 year deals.

Notice how the better clubs like the Cats do this with many of their players.
