What I mean is what’s in it for the player if he’s not guaranteed to be taken by his nominated club in the national draft?
He most likely gets to play for the club of his choice, which his Dad played for.

That's the whole concept of father sons. ;)

Vader going back to the Ben Jarman drafting ....it was at the time, if you nominated a father / son in the main draft, you were obligated to take him ....UNLESS, he was bid on, then you could refuse to meet the bid

It's why we only nominated Jarman as a Rookie father son ....and not in the main draft

Is this still the case now with Welsh ?
I'm not totally certain. There are 2 separate F/S Nomination dates - today (31st Oct) and Friday 22nd November. The November date pre-selects them in the RD, so you don't need to worry about being gazumped.

In any case, it's a moot point, given our lack of list positions. We won't have the option of hoping he falls through to the RD, as we won't have any rookie list vacancies - and thus no ability to pre-select him ahead of the RD.

I get that, it works for us, but the player doesn’t seem to get much, I can understand if they go high and the collateral was a lot, but with a later pick?

Does the player automatically go on to the rookie list if no one picks him?
Yes, they do.

But given our list spots, we’ll take home with our last pick if a bid doesn’t come.

What’s in it for Tyler? Is it not obvious?
He wants to play for the Crows and now he’s guaranteed a spot on the list unless a bid comes early.

He’s way more likely to get to us now than he would in open draft.

What do people think about Josh Smilie? Would he be a good fit for us if Smith / Draper is gone?
Concern for me over Smilie was he didn't step up when the quality stepped up - ie at the Nationals - although he wasn't terrible, which leads to the thought that maybe he was bullying the general U18 league with his size advantage. Not a great mark for his height but a very good kick. Wonder if he'll potentially be a defender rather than mid. Good player - maybe 7-12 range rather than the top echelon.
