Think he’s gonna be a first possession clearance winner at the next level. Big and powerful, but not exactly a bulky frame yet either, so I think he can add even more size and become dominant at the top level, if he wants to

Booming kick gives him a POD compared to the Mrouches of the world, too (as well as height of c), plus I think he’s generally more athletic than Langford from what I’ve seen

Attitude is a big red flag if it’s true though - not a Phillipou situation where’s he’s a hard-working FIGJAM (if those rumours were correct, as well)
Funny thing about Langford is he might look slow but he runs the lanes on the outside at times and is able to run and carry and kick so he’s an interesting player too

Smilie seems to be a large % contested without much of that outside game or ability to get handball receives on the move like Langford does

Don’t think Langford will have as good a time finding much time and space when he steps up to the next levels, particularly on the inside

Maybe he’ll be a good off a wing? Gotta make use of his long boot, marking, toughness and accumulation somehow

Going to be an interesting player , I reckon he’s going to go ok

AFL pre seasons will have him chiseled and repeat running etc

Just a natural ball magnet

You could look at it that way, or you could say that its a great year to have pick 1 because there's a large group of excellent options and you can pick the prospect with the attributes you value the most.
Spot on.

There’s not a standout strong candidate though

Last year you had Harley Reid and even Colby Mckercher before that guys like Ashcroft /Sheezel/ Wardlaw

And before that the Daicos / Darcy/ JHF draft

Don’t reckon it’s the best year to have pick 1 compared to those years personally

Don’t see a heap of difference between pick 1 and pick 9 which is rare

I do like a bit of anaysis, so quite liked the video below, but it does go for nearly 44 minutes, so there is a summary to pick 7:

I've highlighted my preferred traits, and I don't think versatility is worth as much given our needs. Using the marks (out of 5) above, my ranking would be FOS, Draper, Smith, Lalor, Reid.

Mutineer would you agree with the trait marks above, and how anyone else realistically in our mix might fare?

Any other way to watch this video? That link isn’t working.

Maybe if FO'S and Sam Lalor had got a decent run at it and not had their niggles that could have been different.

Edit - Even Sid Draper to a lesser degree.

Not sure how people can say its a good year to have the #1 pick when the talent level is so even.

Ya think West Coast would prefer to have Pick 1 this year and Pick 5 from last year?

Pretty much common sense to be happy with a higher pick when there are clear standouts at the top and happy with a lower pick in a draft that is even.

If you got a choice of pick 1 in 2023 or pick 1 in 2024 which would you choose?

Not a great year to have pick 1, not really a clear stand out
It will become clear in a couple of years who’s the gun and everybody would have picked him 😉especially the scribes.
As for me I genuinely have no clue and happy the odds of us stuffing up our pick are greatly reduced this year.

Gotta remember than even in a deep and even draft there will be a couple of high picks that never make it (2019)

Thanks, Big W.

Dylan (does some good work) certainly rates FOS.
FOS is such a smooth mover and good decision maker, really hurts with his possessions. His lack of games this year hopefully sees him drop down the order.

Jagga has looked the most polished of the/my top 4, and looks a really safe bet. But he didn't have the injury set backs the other 3 had to start the year, so hard to really compare.

Draper has that speed and spin move. There's been a knock on his disposals, but his disposals looked pretty good once he was up and running in the champs. Probably just needs to get used to the speed of the game as he steps up (and an uninterupted pre-season).

Lalor still looks to lack a bit of match fitness, but all the bits are there to be a pretty special player.

I'd be pretty happy with any of those 4 on draft night.

I'd rather have pick 1 last year than this, but I wonder how pick 4 this year will stack up against last year's pick 4 in a few year's time.

Anyone looking to get a look at almost all of the top prospects in this draft when they were all fit and firing also some that have flown under the radar like Zak Johnson , Flynn Penry etc.

The 2023 U17's Futures game

Yep but that’s the whole point

There were no ‘maybes’ re Harley Reid etc

The only spanner recently was giants having to pick a guy they thought would stay when he clearly wasn’t a number 1 pick

We are unlikely to be able to trade up or find the collateral to land Alex Dodson but we do have the collateral to land this lad. Bear in mind those stats were in almost blizzard like conditions down in Tassie on the weekend. Good ruck craft already and follows up ; with neat skills for a big unit.
