But if we split 8 for 15 and 16 we will be picking at 18 - 19 or later and all those will most likely be gone already

Different if it was 8 for 10 and 11 but that would involve our F1 as well and I wouldn’t do it and neither will Richmond
No they won’t.

Kako Marshall Lombard and Ashcroft aren’t available to us and they blow the order out.

The same players would be available

8-20 are all somewhat similar talents.

There isn’t a clear cut pick 8. Every club would be viewing this differently.

Say, 8 and 32 into 15 and 16 where we grab two of those same level of talents is good for us.
But they are not

Hope our recruitment team have a set on them and can pick the difference between the 8th and 20th best player

It’s an even draft.

There is tiering within them. But whether it’s tier 1 or 2. These players are very close.

That is both the knock (no genuine outright clear cut stars) and the value of this draft (the talent is close across the tiers so you can get real value this year)

So let's look at the option of splitting the pics. For arguments sake, let's just assume Taurau goes at 2 or 4 and we get one of the mids we want with 7, let's just say Langford as that seems the flavour of the month.

If 15 and 16 are the targets, we only need to consider the next best group of 9 players.

So what would we rather, our first choice from the following 10 or so or our last 2 preferences:

  • Reid
  • Allan
  • Trav
  • Armstrong
  • Hotton
  • Berry
  • Shanahan
  • Lindsay
  • Hynes
  • Trainor

Am I missing anyone?

Out of this group the two most appealing are Reid and Allan. We won't be able to get both and I prefer Reid, so that rules Allan out for me.

it's such a gamble, if we split the picks and miss out on Reid I'd be disappointed. If we split them and get Reid, I'd be happy to take a punt on Hotton or Trainor, would feel like a free hit for a high risk / Hugh reward type.

All the talk of a top 6 then a big even bunch to about 25 is wrong I think there are a handful of players Tarau, Reid, Allan, Travaglia who I think should be in the conversation and others would probably add Lindsay and Armstrong to that top end bunch. Then there is Trainor who belongs there if you ignore the concussion talk.

After that you are in to neat half forwards like Berry and Dattoli or raw talls like Shanahan and the Whitlocks. They are all nice prospects but are not in an even tier with Tarau Reid Allan Travaglia in my opinion.

I am not keen on splitting 8 and even less keen on trading a F1 for a pick that on the night will be 18+.

Reid and Trainor may well slide all the way back there but just as likely won’t and if Trainor does it is purely because the concussion risk is very real. Only GWS or Richmond are likely to consider a trade out of this draft and into 2025 and only at a very high price. With the split of 8 the trouble is we won’t know who will be available when the split happens and chances are it will be Dattoli and Whitlocks and Hynes. I would take Travaglia over 2 of them every day of the week.

We don’t really need extra picks and I prefer 8 & 32 compared to 15 & 21

We have 8 list spots
Picks 7 8 32 Cole Hofman a mature age Ruck and we will need to rookie Crouch for now. Leaves one spot to rookie Peckett or other Rookie depending how we view what is left in the Rookie draft. Crouch will probably retire before the start of the season and we will take his spot to SSP someone.

At 32 take a tall Simms or Stumpf or Mraz O’Farell and re-enforce our talls I really haven’t spent any time looking at them so whoever they rate is OK with me.

Hoping for Langford Reid or Smillie Reid but am ok if it is Allan instead of Reid or even Travaglia. Expect Tarau will be gone to North but am OK to take him too if he slides. Any two of Langford Smillie Tarau Reid Allan and Travaglia is better than any split option.
Also need to include the controversial Sandringham Zebras rookie which means we need to take Peckett in main draft.
This means pick 32 would need to be the ruck if we are going down that path.

Why would you do that? At that point it’s a sellers market. 8 for 10 and 11 is more than enough if they’re desperate.
They would be insane to do that. They need as much quality coming through as possible.

If I were them I'd be looking to trade one of those picks for Norths 2nd, spread the player intake out a bit and probably get a far higher pick next year.

Any kick that travels more than 40 metres is considered 'effective' even if it results in a turnover

So if he kicks it 100 times, and every time it travels 40+ metres but hits an opponent's chest, he would still have 100% efficiency
An effective kick is a kick to a teammate or over 40 meters to a contest,
while kicking efficiency is the percentage of all kicks that are effective.

So no, if it hits the opponent's chest, it's not an effective kick.

It's an interesting thought.

Ben Lennon could be 8th on your list while Zac Merrett was closer to 20th on most lists.

Whoever we think is the 8th best player probably won't be the 8th best player in 6 years.

Every pick's a gamble.

Not sure what point I'm trying to make here. Presumably we have a list of players we'd take at 8 and if they're all gone we split it?

Or maybe they think they can get their 10 and 11th choices at 15 and 16.

If it happens. There would be method to it.

Either way. They might say **** it and take Allan at 8

Do you think we'd be willing to take Hotton despite delisting Olli?

If we by any chance trade up to pick #2 with #7 and F1. Wouldn't a top midfielder drop to us at 8 as well?

So we could potentially have at #2 Draper/FOS and then at #8 Langford/Smilie

Exactly my point, we own the pick, not them, if they want someone desperately they have to pay overs, not us. From what I understand, it’s not on our radar, pick 15 and 16 are firmly in our sights if the draft pans out as we expect it to.

You don’t think your proposal of north trading what looks like a top 5 pick next year for pick 15 or 16 - “insane”?
