All you campaigners thinking we’re going to be a contender overnight need to calm the **** down. It’s going to take a couple of more drafts plus Free Agency to put us in the sweet spot. Just enjoy the ride, as I’ve always posted, despite protests, we were always picking the best talent available.

We don’t need anymore Rob Eddys and Mini’s on our list!
Why don't you just F*** off back to your GWS board only campaigner on here is you clown

Could we trade our second next year to Adelaide, for their 2 thirds next year, in order to facilitate a trade between North and Adelaide for Tauru at 4? Not sure if this is allowed.

The copium is flowing strong.
I’ve been a fan all along and never been upset at the prospect of selecting him. IMO he’s one of the best prospects of the draft. Travaglia I’m a little more meh and would prefer Allan but tbh in terms of where they’re ranked there’s not much difference. We can’t control who goes before our picks so what can you do? I find it so strange that people are getting so upset and invested in this tbh.

So thought I would get my draft day thoughts down on paper. That way I can look back in a few years and see just just how wrong I was.

Looking across the last few weeks, it has pretty much been the same top 7 spoken about as the first 7 live selections. Assuming Smith, FOS and Lalor go top 3, I am super happy with any of Draper, Smillie, Langford or Tauru. Obviously Langford or Draper would be amazing for our midfield, and I will be doing cartwheels if one of those 2 slide. But I am also getting increasingly excited for Tauru. There are a couple of videos where he looks like Rooey MK2. Hands appear excellent. Late birthday and late riser. Seems like one of these types explodes into a superstar every year. Very happy to walk away with that.

Inevitably there will be talk in a few years about why didn’t we trade up to take mid x. The first option to do this was for 3. But we missed the boat there, and Carlton jumped us. Assuming we offered 8+F1, here is where we realized how worthless futures are this year.

Second later option was to trade 7+8 to North for 2. But the incompetent morons paid 25 for Caleb Daniel. Would we have done 7+8 for 2 and 25? Who knows. But I would in an instant. Gives us something like FOS or Draper and maybe Trainor. But absolutely no way would we do 7+8 without another top 30 pick this year coming back. So that North brain explosion basically shut us out of guaranteeing ourselves one of the top 6 mids.

*If any of the North people are still lurking here, dear God you are easily triggered. And yes I am annoyed that one of the teams we have to deal with in this situation was you or Essendon. Easily the two worst trading clubs in the AFL. After watching our club f**k things up with regularity post-2010, trust us, we know what incompetent looks like. And that is you. See my above post if you want more detail. BTW, Parker is an excellent pickup. Brilliant player and leader. Perfect for your list. Paid good value. But in a super even draft with quality spread throughout, you traded pick 25 for a 29yo reserves player who fights in the same weight class as a 15yo girl to play the easiest position on the field. Its almost triggering for us to watch how much that one move has hamstrung you (and now us) from getting what you actually need from the draft.

Moving on from the blue and white s**tshow, pick 8 is where it gets really interesting. Assuming we take Tauru, obviously the midfield is our glaring weakness. So for me, I want Reid. Is that a reach? Maybe. But it is what I think we need, and he ticks a lot of boxes.

Based on the late mocks, and particularly Cal, instead it looks like we will take a HBF with the scope to go into the middle. Trav or Allen the two options. Trav the favorite. And here is where most of the board had a collective moment on Monday night. From what I can see, there where 3 reasons for this.

The first is our decade long trauma of picking flankers that might be mids one day. Makes us all instantly skeptical of the clubs ability to actually do this, and why many (myself included) are more comfortable with a pure mid like Reid.

The second and third reasons were specific to Cal’s mock. Firstly Cal said “worst case you will have a 200 game half-back.” The problem with this is that our whole game plan is built around moving the ball from the back half, and we have 2 of the best HBF flankers out there (Sincs and NAS). The issue isn’t that we are already loaded there. The issue is that these are 2 of the best because they are ELITE kicks. Allan and Trav seem to do a lot right, but both look questionable kicks at best. We have watched sooo many players run the ball out of half back and break lines (think Gilbert / Savage for us or Saad / Hind for others), only to turn the ball over with regularity. Then watch the oppo walk in easy goals and the air go out of the stadium. It sucks. Had Cal said someone like Linsday at our pick, we would probably understand the logic. But enough of the questionable kicks, especially in the back half. Nope, nope, nope. Not how we play and not how any of us want to play.

The second issue with Cal’s mock specifically (and with what the club might be thinking) was that the order of his picks made absolutely zero sense. Taking Tauru as the riser at 7 makes sense. We could then listen to offers for 8, as we are either reaching for a player that suits us, or picking a player that looks good but doesn’t suit us. However, if we take Trav first, we are then listening to offers for Tauru. He might hold more value, but that is also the reason I really really want him. If we ultimately miss out on the first 6 mids AND the most exciting tall with a huge ceiling, that is basically everyone's worst nightmare.

So yeah, I genuinely understand the melts. And to those responding with ‘trust the club,’ geez that’s a hard sell to a lot of us. Personally I am almost there after ripping out NAS, Pou and Wilson 3 drafts in a row, and then poaching Dalrymple. But I certainly understand those that have very limited faith.

So where does this leave me on draft day?

Well trading up is out because North is the second worst run club in the AFL. Trading down by splitting 8 (and upgrading 32) for 2 picks (or even 3) between 10 and 25 appears unlikely based on the noise. However, if we take Tauru or a sliding mid, I think this would be hugely popular with the fanbase, myself included. There are a plethora of players here I like from mids, (Reid, Hynes) to KPP (Shanahan or a Whitlock). But based on the rumors I am resigned to not doing this.

So far all the hundreds of pages written over the last month, that leaves us with 7 and 8.

7 – Just keep it simple and take either a sliding mid, or Tauru. Happy days. If there is a curveball, then play it as it comes. But I am very happy with any of Draper, Langford, Smillie or Tauru here. 2 of them is the dream

8 – Earn your money Dalrymple. Assuming we aren’t splitting, then I want Reid. Lindsay I understand here too. Allan (and even less so Trav) is my least preferred option. Will of course jump on board if we pick one of these two. But not the flavor of player that I think we need.

Anyway that’s my utterly useless 2 cents. Happy draft day to all! Looking forward to the chaos on here

Of course you’re entitled to your opinion but not many 18 year olds have a big frame!

Pretty much spot on

Well said mate. Agree with pretty much all of it. I'll be a happy Saints supporter with Tauru and Reid.
