What a night.

FOS at 2. Can play anywhere. Silky smooth skills. Can take a grab. Elite disposal. Can ease him in at HF of HB before he spends some time in the midfield.

Whitlock at 199cm. Can settle in nicely under the tutelage of Darling and Souva for a year or 2 while he fills out.

Overall very happy with this.

Under the tutelage of Darling? He’ll be pulling out of marking contests in no time.

Any 1 of those blokes at our pick tomorrow and I'd be stoked.

"Some of the top draft prospects, particularly this year, can hang their hat on hardly playing a bad game. That's something that Moraes did in the back-end of last season and looked like maintaining early in 2024. His numbers are consistently strong at Coates Talent League level, accumulating 25 or more disposals in seven of his 12 games this year, and hitting the scoreboard in eight of them with four hauls of multiple goals."

A midfielder who knows how to find the ball and kick goals. TICK.

"While this year’s AFL Draft crop is renowned for its midfield depth, Whitlock is among the many talented talls who will be highly sought after later in the first round. He suits the modern day requirements of key position players in that he is mobile across the ground and quite nimble below his knees, to compliment his aerial range. Whitlock also has the competitiveness to hold his own and along with his athletic gifts, projects as a forward with one of the biggest upsides available. His ability to ruck is an added bonus. Expect him to feature in the 15-25 range, likely as the second or third tall forward taken."

Could compliment RoMa but honestly tickles my fancy the least out of these 4.

"Gross' explosive streak is a weapon at stoppages, particularly the centre bounces. He has the breakaway speed to drive his legs out the front of the contest and burst into dangerous launch zones, where he often thumps the ball long inside 50. That ability to take metres and run-and-carry means he is frequently in position to hurt the opposition.

His physical attributes are also felt defensively. Gross is a real competitor and lays hard tackles when beaten to the ball, while also busting out of them and refusing to be tied down himself. As much was evident during the first AFL Academy match, where he lifted his side's intensity around the ball and helped match it against VFL opposition in Coburg."

An explosive mid with a strong defensive game, surely Ross would be interested? Looks to have a bit of mongrel around stoppages like Garcia.

"Another occasion where he held his own down back came that same season, again against the Northern Knights where he held his own against eventual 2023 pick 10 Nate Caddy, winning several contests and restricting Caddy’s output in the first half. Against a strong Calder Cannons side in 2024, Shanahan also played a defender/midfielder role again and performed admirably, showing he still had what it took to play those roles.

Shanahan's mobility has also been highlighted over the last few seasons. In 2023 as a bottom-ager, he was swung on-ball on numerous occasions which has also shown his ability to cover the ground for a player of his height. In the National Futures game on AFL Grand Final day at the MCG, he was also swung into the ruck, despite being undersized, however performed quite admirably by using his vertical leap to compete."

Versatile, mobile, strong mark. Could be RoMa 2.0 in terms of his ability to compete on almost every line as a big man. Has already played VFL football and has had 4-5 goal games.

Gross, Shanahan or Moraes would be great for us I think, Whitlock I'd be ok with but like the look on highlight videos of Shanahan and Moraes most probably.

For me 1. Moraes, 2. Shanahan, 3. Gross, 4. Whitlock. Although now I feel like there must be something going on with Shanahan for him to slide this far...

Thoughts on Moraes? Seems like one of the highest rated Mids left. I don’t know much about him.
I look at our mids and don’t think it’s as bad as it seems

Steele,McRae,pou,windhager,Henry, Sinclair.

Potentially Owens Wilson Nas Garcia rotating through

Plus crouch if he gets his body right.

Would I have loved one of the top 7 to slip yeah.

We needed to replace battle Taaru is him.
TT looks like a type who can become a mid in time.

We have no ruck depth other than Heath who is completely unproven.
If they get rid of the sub 2 rucks will become the new norm so more depth is never a bad thing

I’d love Dodson. I’d be happy with Shanahan.

But watch it be this guy… have a read

It’s not hate on Tobie FFS. Good luck to the kid. Hope he smashes it. BUT….. RTB, Misson even bloody Jack Steel today acknowledged we need mids and then some mids. And what does STKFC do with two top ten picks? Take the only two defenders taken in the top 15. Totally justified to be going WTF?
What is the use to get a all out midfielder if they are not up to standard - when put the time into a guy that turns into a Dunstan or worse - pick the best available and then see once they develop what position they take on.

Jack Steele has been fantastic for us , but in the coming year and years even his position is going to be under pressure , which is great because it will push him to play at his best - McCrae is not being talked about to much due to falling out at the Dogs last year and I full expect the 4 x All Australian will be what we have been screaming out for.

The difference in age between Steele and McCrae is only a year and hopefully they will carry us through the development of Phillipou , Windhager , Owens , Wilson , Henry who I all expect to have time in the middle --- also on top of that we are eyeing off the free agents in Brayshaw and LDU plus looking at bringing home Callahan who is off contract.

Our depth in talent is starting to really make us look like a top tier team - kids like Hastie , Schoemaker , McLenan , Caminiti , Keller , Garcia , Heath , Collard all have promise and with getting another lot of class talent this year things are looking up.

They've cleaned up. Makes me sick. We've been total shit since 2011 yet the Tigers and the reigning premiers are the teams cleaning up at the draft. We're gonna need a lot of luck and players to come on. Harsh reality is out last GF competiting team was built from multiple low first round draft picks. We've not been able to replicate that model since, for one reason or another.
Both the one reason and the another is Jack Higgins.

Rich WCE and 2x Dog picks in front of us, so think we need a mid so that leaves my preference in order as
Moreas 183cn outside athletic
Boxhall WA Wce before us athletic riser in the draft boards
Gross 181 cm hard at it mid
Jack Ough. 194 cm Mid

I cannot see Shanahan or Whitlock still there at our pick so worst case have a choice of 2.

would love Dodson, but geelong are keen, expect a move from them & dogs have 2 picks before us,they love rucks & after English are pretty bare,of course richmond may take him themselves,so chances slim

shanahan i guess next, then i guess its between gross and boxshall, some token effort to make up for our mids disaster

if we go total st.kilda and those 4 are the first 4 taken, then i guess we go barrat, apparently we are into him
I love Barrat, but surely we go smaller.

Just watched Moraes highlights. Petracca Mk2 , let’s do it.

Lots of picks =\= cleaning up.

Tigers did this in 2005. Didn't work.

Suns & Giants both got loaded up early. Didn't work.

North have had how many top picks? Hasn't worked.

The Dogs had a Grand Final team, added two top 5 picks in JUH & Darcy, and went backwards.

I ****ing hate this idea that loading up on "talented" kids means a flag is inevitable. There's so much more to it than that.

FMD our THREE best players all came from the rookie list!
Richmond “cleaned up” at the draft with like 5 top 30 picks a couple of years ago

Richmond loaded up on talls.
Dogs are stacked with talls.

West coast could go tall or go Boxshall.

FWIW.

I think Richmond take Dodson
Eagles take Shanahan/Whitlock
Dogs take Moreas & Gross

So it’s Boxshall or Ough for us
