I mentioned early days this year when Dear looked like he did (looks every bit of a top 10 pick) that it meant we would be more open to trading our first. I reckon we view him as a bonus first rounder. Therefore I reckon it’s a no brainer to give up our first for Barrass. Add Battle to that it would be a home run offseason. We already have 2 top 10 draft picks on the outskirts of our midfield and with a midfield heavy top of draft it makes sense to trade it. We have to keep our second rounder though to target a key Fwd. One of the Whitlocks, Shanahan, Faull, Armstrong, Sims, Gerryn will be there. Offer our first and that’s it. Any talk of a 1st and a 2nd is crazy. They will bite our hand off for a pick 10 with where they’re at now. They will have their heart set on a player in draft so just offer our first and don’t budge.

Great post. It matches my thoughts 100%. Our side is at the point where we now are only looking to fill gaps, not go for best available.
One gap is the backline and if we get Battle and even Barrass not only would that gap be sealed, the run-on it would give to guys like Sicily & Weddle to play further up the ground is invaluable.
For that alone, paying the price for Barrass becomes a no-brainer.
The other part is the fact that we don't need a high pick. Our other gap is a tall fwd and as Wingnut points out, several marking fwds will be available with our second so what's the gain of hoarding a first to get another mid when we already have two very good developing mids that struggle for gametime - Ward and Mackenzie, and I'm not even counting HH or Finn yet.

It's not crazy to use a first on Barrass, in our situation it's crazy not to.

However For you, a band 1 offer makes it more likely he ends up at Hawthorn. Talk of 800k is foolish.

The guy is a UFA and move to the club of his choice and there's nothing the Saints can do about it. Hawthorn could offer him the AFL minimum if he was willing to take it (yes of coarse he wouldn't). He might, but the Eagles have lowballed his contract, moved on their head coach and are feeling the pinch of a pretty dire list situation. Last year it was just "injuries" that held them back, they might have been hoping for a quick turnaround with Reid, this year they were shown that they're actually just old and not very good.

When clubs are losing players they have to massage the story, and make it sound like the player just couldn’t turn his back on the money on offer.
You don’t want members thinking that players are actually looking at other clubs thinking “I’ll be more successful there”.

That’s why the money that Hawthorn are “believed to” be offering is so high.

It might complicate the deal. Depends where we finish. Pick 10 is about right for TB. If we happen to make a prelim not sure 15/16 gets it done. If we get Tb or Battle then DBG doesn’t have a spot with us so let’s hope WC are interested. DGB steak knives at best.

Correct, the optics for the supporters members and sponsors here is important.

The Eagles will point to the fact they had him contracted and the player wanted more long term security blah blah blah and quietly will sit back behind closed doors and say “show us the picks”.

What will be very interesting SYL is what they demand/ request for the trade and whether they are prepared to negotiate or this becomes an absolute sh.t show until the final few seconds of the trade period when one team buckles.

That situation sounds like a deal was agreed to in principle but it's important to remember that a lot can always break down to get the whole thing across the line. Could be anything from money, contract years, stipulations of bonuses, draft assets just to name a few. It was made to sound like it was Barrass the vetoed the trade but just like some of us Hawk fans feel now I think it was the Eagles that didn't end up doing the trade because the Swans likely didn't want to give up the draft collateral they were asking for.

The talk is that Barrass was promised by former list manager Rohan O'Brien who stepped down that his contract would be renegotiated. This is why Barrass is disgruntled and is willing to move as the new list manager Matthew Clarke has obviously earmarked Barrass as a player that isn't in their future plans and can be moved for draft assets.

Where a fair club in negotiations but I really hope that we remember that they're actually pushing him out the door and actually reneging on what was mentioned as a verbal handshake. I'm not saying we should lowball them but I'm not giving anything more than 1 x 1st rounder and with that said I'd be open by offering our F1.
