We are at an all time low list wise. Going up against a team like GC tonight full of first round picks and were a team full of MSD picks and other teams rejects. Im not as bullish on our draft picks as others (bar weddle). Our top 10 picks look the worst of the lot. Mountain of work to do before Tassie come in and draft is compromised, at least now is a good time to suck.

Hard to disagree with this. I was initially bullish on Ward, McDonald and Butler but all three are struggling. Butler can’t play football. Finger twirler has been found out Ward was a pissweek so called “safe option” top ten pick. Not my words the clubs. Nowhere near it. DGB another top ten bust. Chol is a cat, unfit and lazy. GC has top ten talent pretty much on every line and then some. There is no splitting of picks this year. Next years first for smith or no deal. Sam needs to change something and quickly, starting to loose the players

Tonight was BAD.

But 6 days ago Josh Ward showed his class and Josh Weddle had an absolute shocker.

It happens with young players.

Ward, MacDonald, Mackenzie and Weddle will all be hitting their prime around the same time. It's hard to be patient, but in 24 months time we can make more definitive calls on how we view all 4 of them.

By the time they're reaching 22/23 years of age is when consistency becomes a non-negotiable.

Well said 👏

Now I shall go to bed a cry myself to sleep.

We finished 16th last year with a great injury run.

A few of us here (myself included) predicted modest gains if we had a decent injury run.

To date, that hasn’t happened and we ran into a stronger GC unit (they have FA injuries) than we faced in 2023, up there, and came away 2 goals better than last season.

So we are 0-5, but play Norf who are playing far inferior football to the 5 teams we have played this year.

We will win that game, and will win several more in 2024. Perhaps not 7 wins as per 2023.

BUT:

We will end up with a better % than 2023 because we are a better unit collectively, and we fight harder in 2024 than we did last year.

Bookmark it.

Disagree regarding Ward - we really do love the safe pick. I was hoping we wouldn't take him during his draft year, and he's done nothing since to make me think we made the right choice. Very underwhelming and incredibly soft. The ease at which he gets pushed off the ball is embarrassing.

Tells me everything I need to know.

Come the back end of the season, those players, plus Day, Watto, Ginni and Moore are going to be a fun looking group to play with imo.
Our challenge is going to be showing that our competitiveness matches our "fun-ness"

It's impressive that you manage to bash ward in every thread.

The way we are travelling we may need to start over pre-Tassie side entry.

No need for Smith if we are going to trade a few out and hit the next 2 or 3 drafts hard.

Both Sicily and Hardwick look like they want out. Hardwick is just more professional about it..

It might be a case that we haven't actually bottomed out yet.

Big question marks on MacDonald Butler Ramsden Stephens DGB Nash and others - Serong and Phillips have to get their shot soon surely.

We surely lose Breust Gunston as well.

I can see the upside in MacKenzie - potential for sure - Ward looks to be a solid 150 game B grader.

However unless we can land a good KPD and a genuine KPF soon, then the same problems will keep occurring.

We certainly have too many weaknesses to think we can fill them by trading. We are deficient in all stocks inc ruck.

It could be a case of get as many draft picks as we can over the next 2 years and hope we get as lucky as the ones Clarko inherited.

I think I'm still shell-shocked after tonight.

Virtually zero positives in a dirty night. Horrible.

A little bit dramatic from a few posters, think about the long game. Ward is learning every game, still very young, same with quite a few players. I still think we are still setting up for development as opposed to winning, focus remains on the future. We are still missing 4-5 players from our best 22.

We shouldn’t be trading out high picks for anyone we aren’t at that stage of development despite what the club says they are wrong or its spin. I’m fine rebuilding but then let’s do it properly. Keep high picks find ways to get more. I will get slammed for this but I would trade Sicily to Sydney; he wins them a flag he would dominate at the SCG. They offered 2 first rounders for barrass last year let’s get those. Blanck comes back Serong is coming along nicely so we can cover and we desperately need more young talent. They have 11/19 this year we take 3/11/19 to the draft that would be a good start.

The Sam Taylor chase is well & truly on. We are trying to make him the highest paid player EVER.

Always appreciate your insight no way especially after tonight he is interested unless he wants cash. Totally wrong play for where we are at we need more drafting
Of actual talent.

I'm not sure that's correct. I just think he gets moved off the ball far too easily, far too often and there's times I feel he needs to go harder. There was an instance last night where he had a lacklustre approach to a contest on the boundary, GC player nudged him which completely removed him from the contest, and the GC players just strolls off with ease disposing without pressure. That's a bad look and unacceptable, especially when you have form.

11/19 aren't going to help us though. If you're going to trade Sicily you want to be bringing in top end talent. Not just so so first round players. 19 is basically a 2nd round pick.
What we seem to be lacking when you compare our list build to Gold Coast is just pure high end talent. Top 5/10 elite players.

We need a priority pick. We pick back to back early this year would be a godsend for this list

I agree we do but in reality we won’t get one not where we want it anyway.

If the AFL did give us one it will be a pick at the end of the first round to start with pick 19.

Hawthorn hasn’t played finals since 2018 so 6 years.

Since 2018 wins.

2019 - 11 wins
2020 - 5 wins
2021 - 7 wins
2022 - 8 wins
2023 - 7 wins

A lot of these wins are as finishing the season of strong hurting our draft position which was good for morale but not getting to the elite kids.

And trading away top picks for players like Wingard,JOM and Mitchell who did win a Brownlow but now is no longer at the club I think was a waste of a first round pick.
