How long is a generation? I've seen from as low as 10 years but more generally 15-20 years.

Also does once (or twice or thrice sometimes) in a generation refer to a particular club sees a player like this or is it league wide? So the league sees a player like this a couple of times every fifteen years or so which would be much harder.

I think I've got it.
Its like drink sizes that start at large, extra large then jumbo rather than SML.

Rookie: young gun
Regular player: star
Better than regular: gun
Best couple of players in your team: superstar
Best couple of players in the league: generational talent

Franchise player: superstar who is recognisable to lay folk and gets part of his salary through "approved" representational work. Such as representing the game or a cardboard factory.

I just used it as a term to mean it to mean genuinely elite, I wasn't really thinking about the word that deeply. My point was Jackson is an absolute freak, is likely to get even better and I don't think many of us were expecting him to be such a freak when we were looking to trade for him. I thought he was good but not this good

It’s quite possible to get Logan McDonald and still have two first rounders available imo.

We have 3x 2024 first rounder, 1x 2025 first rounder and 1x 2024 second rounder to play with.

Luke Jackson cost pick 13, a future first and future second with future seconds/thirds coming back. I think we’ll have a better pick than pick 13 tbh - it could be ours or Port’s.

If a similar trade is done for McDonald trading the remaining two first rounders for a top ten pick is quite doable - If the right small forward is available he could be ready to impact in meaningful way by year two imo.

That's nearly my dream outcome.

2024 and 2025 first round pick for Logan McDonald and a future 2nd.

St Kilda's 2nd round pick to St Kilda for Lance Collard.

Remaining two first round picks to an academy/FS club with a top five or ten pick. Draft the best small forward.

Speaking of which, I was looking for the best thread to ask about Malakai Champion from Subi. Anyone have any opinions or seen him play? I've watched some Youtube footage and read some articles and he sounds perfect for our list - forward craft of Walters mixed with the agro of Ballantyne from what I've seen and read (he started two brawls in the footage lol, didn't give away frees from what I could see because of it). Played senior footy in Kalgoorlie when he was 15 (had to get permission from Mum), named All-Australian at under 16 level, one of five WA players named in the 2024 AFL Academy squad. Part of the WCE NGA but that stupid top 40 pick rule could actually help up this time. Will be watching his development closely.

Being from WA means we probably only need to use a pick in the teens to get him, WC won’t give up a top 3 pick for a small forward and he won’t have the hype of vic small forward like Watson or Rochelle.
From your description he sounds perfect.

In the very early mock drafts for 2024 Malakai Champion has been named as a highly rated player likely to go late in the first round. A lot can change obviously between now and the draft but I'm sure we'd be watching him closely. I lived in Kalgoorlie for a year working as a teacher and I went to quite a few Kalgoorlie League games. If Champion was able to have an impact at senior level in that league in his mid teens then he's tracking very well for his age. These highlights are from the game he played a role in starting two brawls. He's super impressive.

Otis Harvey is expected to go first from WA?
Not much info on him.
But appears to be another mid/forward.

He was everywhere in that game, centre bounce, taking marks on half back and of course up forward.

He is exactly what we need...

I don't see anyone from WA going in the first round at this stage but it does look a weak draft overall so there may be fluctuations. I think Kayle Gerreyen is the best chance from WA to go first round but that is only if he can put some pressure on the scoreboard; he has mainly been playing ruck but is a super athletic tall with a great mark and good skills who projects as being a handful for defenders.

Champion is good but he is small (176cm) for a midfielder, still a bit raw and probably suffers from there being a few who play a similar midfield game but with better credentials and athleticism, I have him next probably in the second or third round along with Bo Allan (outside of Champion, Allan is the only other National Academy player, is a tallish athletic backman training with us this preseason) and Otis Harvey (best midfielder from WA, basketball background and will tick the leadership box for many).

I agree that Champion looks like he could be a good fit I am but waiting to see how he tests in terms of endurance and speed, some of the interviews and of course how he does in the championships. As we keep seeing, there is an expectation with Top 30 picks that you need to tick boxes on and off the field; deficiencies in any areas will see you fall down the order.

The long range draft predictions Ive read describe this years draft as likely to have good depth with a lot of talent in the top 30 prospects but weak in terms of depth in key position players.

And we should make our peace with the reality that the club would pick a talented midfielder with a top ten pick over a specialist small forward.
The good news is that there could be quite a few mid/forwards that will be drafted early in the draft. A players that's got pace and class that's seen long term as a damaging mid but is expected to start their career as a classy forward would be ideal in many ways. Cooper Simpson might be just that type of player but adding another player with class and pace who can rotate forward/mid fills a long term need for us regardless.

If Gold Coast finish bottom six and have another gun academy kid (which atm they have - things change in 12 months) I can see a trade similar to the Western Bulldogs one this year getting done.

Only issue would be if both us and Port flop and we end up with two top ten picks (which imo is more than possible). It'd make trading Collingwood's first to move up pretty pointless unless we're getting ourselves a top five pick.

I have it as GAblett jnr, Dusty, Fyfe levels.

I know that Collard was rumoured to have issues with going east but trading players, other than Jason Horne-Francis, after one season rarely happens.

Wasn’t he technically a first rounder, so he’d have a three year deal?

I think it was top 20 this year, so should only be 2 years

In terms of smaller players expected to debut or be considered for the forward line we currently have Emmett, Simpson, Delean and perhaps Stanley.

I hope we are very selective if we are adding to that pool as I am optimistically thinking they each have a reasonable chance of making it.

Meaning, quality not quantity.

Same thinking for the draft generally with our multiple first rounders. Quite open to shuffling a 2024 first round pick to 2025 in the search for quality. Clubs looking for Points should be our new best friends.

Two year deal and the first big hurdle for St Kilda was him coming back to Perth for Christmas and going back for the long stint after New Year.

Motlop should have been available to us.
Ironically we take Henry when we should of taken Pickett.
To be fair though we have done well to get the WA boys back in Clark
and Sharp, Jackson.
The 2019 AFL draft is the Super Draft for our club.
Jackson, Serong, Young and Sharp.

Love how they change the rules unless your club is a Northern academy
