List Mgmt. 2024 List Mismanagement and Trading Part 2

Two players will be moved to the rookie list (I suspect two of Smith/Schoenberg/Strachan), Keane will be upgraded and I suspect we'll take Welsh with #64 (unless a bid comes earlier which is highly unlikely).

We just move someone to the rookie list and take Welsh on the main list.
Say Walker and Smith and promote Keane so we use our 3 compulsery picks.
Can we do that without delisting them first.

The first list lodgment deadline is the 31st, and there will be another one after that. It'll be what we did for Hamill and Macpherson before him, delist and re-draft in the RD (no one will pounce on any of them).

Previously there was a period between the afl draft and rookie draft where you can place 2 players straight from the senior list to the rookie list. Is that still the case.

Nope, that rule didn't survive COVID.

Now we have to delist them, commit to re-draft them in the RD, and then re-draft them in the RD. In the meantime, they're free to sign elsewhere as DFAs - assuming they can find themselves a buyer. Doing so would probably make Adelaide very happy (and would make BF posters delirious with joy).

No - that's correct. You've included Welsh & Pick 4 on the list, which brings us up to a full house.

Welsh either goes on our rookie list or our senior list, depending on how many rookies we upgrade (1 = senior, 2 = rookie). We'll know the answer to that question on 31st October.

Yep so need to delist Burgess and another.

Zero chance Tex accepts that even if its a paper excercise.
Of course he would, Tex loves the club and would do anything to help them. Passed up much better offers to stay next year.
I agree it won’t be him though because someone would take him, but Burgess, Strachan, Smith, Schoey, Murphy would all be fine.

There are a number of candidates, of which Burgess is only 1. My guess is that it will be 2 of Burgess, Smith & Schoenberg.

I don't think it will be Walker, as that would just be downright rude - and there's a decent chance that someone else would gazump us by grabbing him in the RD, ND or PSD.

I don't think it will be Strachan, because he's our only backup ruck (Thilthorpe & Turray do not qualify), and they won't want to risk even the slightest possibility of someone gazumping us.

I don't think it's going to be Murphy either, given that he was in our 2024 leadership group and the coaches clearly rated him as being in our best 22 (even if BF disagrees vehemently with this assessment). There are plenty of other players the club values lower than Murphy, who they would be willing to put through the delist/re-draft process.

Tex would do it, and he certainly wouldn't sign as a DFA with any other club.

However, he still needs to nominate for the ND and/or PSD, which then flows through to the RD. There's a chance another club would be prepared to draft him, gazumping us.

I just don't see the club wanting to put him in that ridiculous position.

With regards to the process of delisting players...

There are 2 List Lodgement dates - Thurs 31st October, and Wed 13th November. Delisted players have until Wed 13th November to nomininate for the ND and/or PSD. I assume this means we have until 13th Nov to delist them, though it would probably be best to have it done by 31st October.

I remember last year and even this year that Welsh was rated highly. what happened? did playing him in the SANFL reserves "hide" is talent by playing him under age against men?

Smith should read the writing on the wall. take a payout.. do what Luke Brown did

This assumes we have enough room remaining in our 2024 salary cap (which is mostly spent) to pay out his 2025 contract. This is unlikely to be the case.

Best case for Smith is that they talk him into retiring early in 2025, once it becomes abundantly clear to him that he's never going to be selected at AFL level again. We then put him on the Inactive List, and draft a replacement in the MSD.

So the only way for a delisted player to become available in the RD is to nominate for one/both of the ND/PSD and not have their name called?

Yes.

Players who were on an AFL list in 2024 have the right to nominate for the ND, or just the PSD (noting that any player not selected in the ND is automatically eligible for the PSD). Any player who hasn't been selected by the end of the PSD is automatically eligible for the RD. However, you can't get into the RD without having previously been in the PSD.

Smith is probably still on $600k+

Paying out Schoenberg or Burgess would be a cheaper exercise.

It wouldn't be his choice and if it's best for the team, isn't he the ultimate team first person?
Mate, seriously what have you got against Tex? It’s quite blatant and a little disturbing.

I have asked before and you never responded. Most fans see him as an all time great, leading club goal scorer, heart and soul of the club, one of the most exquisitely skilled big men in the modern era. In the conversation as a top 5 player of all time for us.

What’s your issue with him?

If he's delisted, surely he becomes a delisted free agent, so a club would just be able to offer him a contract that he signs. There'd be no need to wait for and waste a pick at the rookie draft.

Agreed. Burgess and Shoey are the obvious 2 (doubtful Smith with his longevity and standing with the club historically)
