We'll take him in the main draft I reckon, and put him to work straight away
Hey mate, did you end up seeing or reading the previous ESPN article from early 2024 I replied to you with showing Welsh at 7 (immediately befor Lalor and Lombard) at the start of the year? Along with a majority of seemingly guaranteed players going top 10 (Lalor, Ashcroft, FOS, Smith, Draper etc).

He definitely was rated much higher than where he is now

If he's not bid on by our 46, reckon we trade it into next year if there's offers and run the gauntlet on getting him free in the RD. Nothing to lose doing it that way.
We already traded 46 into next years draft, we’ve got 60 something.

Anyway, no rules guru but I don’t think we can do that can we?

Don’t we need to use 3 picks in the ND, it can include upgrading rookies but is that done on the night? If we can then we’d be upgrading two rookies instead of one and risking Welsh getting to the RD so I don’t see the point.

Process is to nominate the rookie upgrade by the relevant list lodgement date. This locks it in, and on the night it replaces our last “live” pick

Edit: just checked the rules. Looks like we can do this before the main draft or the PSD - so we do have some flexibility

Further edit: to count as ND selections the rookie upgrade must be before the ND. So out position will be locked in before the draft

Just so as I can get this straight in my head:

  • we currently have 37+3
  • we need to get down to 35 + whatever prior to draft night to take the obligatory 3 picks
  • therefore we still need to delist 2, either completely or with a promise to re-rookie them

Our options are:
  • take pick 4, Welsh and upgrade one rookie
  • take pick 4, upgrade two rookies and hope Welsh slips through to the rookie draft

I thought we kept that, oh well, that's the end of that. WRT RD, you're right about the 3 in the ND I think, but we can still take him with pick 80, which is effectively the same thing. We've got 64, which could be 50 by the time the matching bids eat up 2nd and 3rd rounders. Might have value in a trade.

Considering I said two rookie upgrades, it does work. I don't think I've seen any club announce any rookie upgrades yet, so despite there not being a second list lodgment date pre-draft this year I assume there's still some kind of date for that to occur, whereas they would have to be sitting on news of a delisting that has already been processed.

Everything about Welsh screams rookie draft - no certain position at AFL level as he's too small to continue as a KPF but only has a KPF skillset, a bad combine, strong rumours about work rate/attitude issues despite being moved inside an AFL club a year early, and Adelaide isn't nearly clever enough to have schemed it all up.
Only bad part of his Combine that was poor was the endurance run, speed test was in the top 10% and his hops testing was perfectly fine. Only big area he needs to work on is his endurance. You clearly have never ever watched him play. The endurance factor will be a massive work on for Tyler.

This is correct, although I doubt the second one happens. It's more likely we just take Welsh with 64.

I think this is right- certainly the delisting to create spots.

Thinking further on the timing - while we have the flexibility to upgrade a rookie after the draft, it only counts as a ND selection if we notify the upgrade before the ND.

Which means to make our minimum selections, we have to commit to rookie upgrades before the draft.

In which case, I can’t see the sense in upgrading two rookies hoping he slides. If we do, and another team selects him, we are cooked and simply can’t match.

We also can’t just upgrade one and wait and see - as otherwise we don’t make our mandated 3 selections if he does slide (and we don’t have the list spots to also use 64 if he slides). So we will go in knowing whether it’s Welsh on the main list or rookie.

I can’t see that we take the risk of losing him to save pick 64

Obvious for a few reasons.

1 If we were to delist a player it would be someone on less money for cap reasons. No way to we delist a big name player.

2 The deadline had passed.

3 Friday & Saturday nights are the most common time for drunk postings.

We've already traded #46 into a 3rd round 2025

Watch Tyler carefully ....he's a natural FWD ....he has an innate ability to read the ball off the boot very quickly, and get position quicker than his opponents this year

You can't teach that

His father was to. And he was a magnificent kick for goal.

Tyler has basically played as a stay at home FWD .....his speed and ability to read the ball, strengths

He hasn't had to play the type of game modern fwds play, where they come much further up the ground to defend

It's a learning process now ....and as Mutineer says, the endurance, which he's never had to worry about ...will be a massive work-on

But you could say that for most of the U18 KPF's

I'm trying to assess who Tyler would be similar to playing currently, would Jake Waterman be around the mark?
If so, I'm pretty happy to pick him up in the ND or RD

Welsh is the same height as Waterman ....playing style wise, not a bad comparison

However, I'd forget about height in any comparison, and look at AFL fwds who are elite at reading the ball quickly off the boot

Maybe a Jesse Hogan
