We need a Ruckman.

RoB
Strachan
Hberg
Thilthorpe

With Thilthorpe preferred as a forward, it is dire.

We have some midfield quality in Rankine/Dawson/Sog. A better Ruck than RoB would help.

Look at the second quarter today. We have the talent to be in games against anybody, but it is the lapses that hurt this team where it puts itself into situations where disaster strikes in the last minute of a game.

I think the coach needs to be sacked. Clearly he is not telling his players to play 4 quarters, or the players don't want to listen to Matthew.

Nicks, he gave it his best = but I think he needs to be shown the door even with 2 years remaining!

I knew earlier in the season the club made a mistake of re-singing him.

Does these lapse correlate with us carrying Smith, McHenry, Murphy (played as a standard AFL quality today), RoB and Laird because Nicks continue to select them???? Jones and Keays re-entering the conversation after having an excellent season last year.

Piggybacking on this.

Reilly O'Brien took four contested marks in his first nine games this season. Darcy Cameron took five today. In one game.

O'Brien cannot do the basics right in any way. He has to be dropped.

Commiserations fellas, no one was particularly happy about the result and would normally expect that Rankine play to be let go, you guys just can’t take a trick with umpires at the moment. Reading a few posts I see that ROB isn’t very popular… I don’t know if you recall but he absolutely destroyed us last time. I also saw the 18s match today. A couple of trade questions if anyone is interested:

1. Dyson Sharp is ****ing good, would the Crows look at trading for our F1 this year?

2. Is there any interest in Harry Barnett? Sounds like he’s about to sign a 2 year contract extension.

Personally I think we need to immediately address our need for elite talent. I think we’re a good chance doing that by trading up for a midfielder in this years draft (mind you we won’t have to trade up much higher). I also wouldn’t be so confident your F1 would be the top pick we’d want it to be to go through the hassle.

He did a countdown and when he said Keane I thought he has either left out Jake or Dawson and thought that was wrong
It’s always going to be hard to be up there as a key back, and if we are rating them on where we thought they were going to be at, we’ll then Keane for sure.
But as pure best for us, Dawson ahead.

That’s fair enough, if the ladder stays as is I’d trade down from pick 3 for 2 picks in the top dozen as long as one is in single figures.

Would there be any chance of prying Shai Bolton from Richmond?
Surely he doesn’t want to play in the Richmond team for another 5 years?
I know he’s contracted and would cost alot.
But Rankine and Bolton, wowee

He's contracted until the end of 2028. We can always try, but I feel if he was to go anywhere, it would be back to WA.

Another player we rated Gallucci ahead of. Family must be no good.

Top priorities this offseason (all are out of contract):

Tier 1
  1. H McCluggage (Bris) as FA
  2. I Cumming (GWS) as FA
  3. W Hayward (Syd) as FA

Tier 2
  1. B Hardwick (Haw) as FA
  2. H Perryman (GwS) as FA
  3. E Yeo (WCE) as FA

Tier 3
  1. N Moyle (GC) via trade

To me, the offseason is instantly a failure if we don’t secure at least one of those first tier players.

McCluggage is the definition of the type of midfielder we need. With no ties to SA, and the Lions not really needing to sign any other stars, it seems very unlikely that he would leave for a perennial non-finalist, but we need to be throwing ludicrous amounts of coin his way to turn his head. Would take Laird’s spot in the 22 and improve the balance instantly. Can genuinely split his time between on the ball and a wing. It’s rare to say that about anyone who is any good at all. Stays at Brisbane or gets poached by a contending Vic club for mine.

Cumming is the definition of the type of outside player we need. From Broken Hill, mates with Tex, and surplus to GWS’ needs with Ash and Whitfield running around. Would replace Brodie Smith, and also put a lot of pressure on Chayce Jones. A realistic get, and a huge list need. Pay the man.

Hayward is the exact type of half forward we need. From a winning culture, has speed, skill and can tackle. Instantly replaces McHenry in the 22 if he’s still being picked at the end of 2023 (or replaces Murphy if we’ve finally accepted that McHenry is terrible at literally everything), while potentially freeing Rankine up for more midfield time. Clearly we’re in the mix for Hayward’s services, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen because best 18 players leaving top 4 (and maybe even premier) teams for shitshow bottom clubs is rare at best. Stays at Sydney or moves to Carlton for mine.

In addition to it being an absolute necessity to secure at least one of the above 3 free agents, we should certainly be enquiring about all 3 of Hardwick, Perryman and Yeo as free agents, as the next tier down. Realistically, we should be looking to either get 2 from the top tier, or 1 from each of these tiers.

Hardwick can play at half back or half forward, but probably shapes as more of a forward for us. Seems a very logical play if (and when) we miss out on Hayward. Elite kick of the footy and a great one on one player. Adds a different dimension to our forward line as he’s not really a tall or a small.

Perryman is an interesting one. I don’t really know what his best position is moving forward. Is he a half back who could take Smith’s spot? A wing to take Chayce or Sholl’s spot? Can he play inside? I don’t know, but I know I’d rather see his name on the team sheet than any of Smith, Laird, McHenry, Sholl or Jones. Nowhere near as good a list fit as Cumming for us though IMO so this should be a backup plan.

Elliot Yeo likely wouldn’t be a popular choice around here due to his age and injury history, but his form this year has been back to very close to his best, and I don’t mind adding in some extra experience to the midfield to replace the mediocrity of Laird while the likes of Edwards, Dowling, Taylor, Berry, Pedlar and a new draftee try to bust down the walls.

Others I wouldn’t hate (all are out of contract):
  1. R McInnes (Coll) via trade (new dimension up forward)
  2. C Jiath (Haw) via trade
  3. H Cunningham (Syd) via trade
  4. B George (NM) via trade (uncapped, multiple injuries, huge upside with a new start)
  5. D Grainger-Barras (Haw) via trade (classic buy-low)
  6. E Ford (NM) via trade
  7. H Gallagher (WB) via trade
  8. K Baldwin (Ess) via trade or delisted FA
  9. D Butler (StK) via trade
  10. N O’Driscoll (Fre) via trade
  11. M Guelfi (Ess) via trade
  12. H Jones (Ess) via trade
  13. L Fogarty (Car) via trade

Things I would love that seem impossible (all are out of contract):
  1. L McDonald via trade (looks like WA only or stay in Sydney. Will win Colemans)
  2. L Baker via trade (looks like WA only. Would explode with a better team around him)
  3. N Cox via trade (surely they will re-sign him - could be anything)
  4. L Duggan as FA (can’t see the captain walking out to go to a poor club located in a state he has no ties to)
  5. A Perkins via trade (surely they re-sign him. Would be an amazing trio with him, Rankine and Rachele)
  6. O Henry via trade (He’s never leaving Geelong)
  7. J Henry as FA (neither is he)
  8. J Caldwell via trade (a 3rd club seems unlikely. Much better fit for our midfield than Laird)
  9. L Meek via trade (has emerged as a top 6 ruckman and hawks surely won’t let him go)

Other things I could see us considering but we really shouldn’t be doing IMO (only the first 4 aren’t out of contract):
  1. LDU via trade (will cost 2 first rounders which is far too much in trade capital for mine this year, reload next year when he’s FA)
  2. Lukosius via trade (not a significant list need with Welsh coming in. Overrated and selective with effort)
  3. Petty via trade (Another who will cost far too much via trade. Wait another year and grab as FA if we still have a spot in the 22 for him. He blatantly isn’t a good forward, and Murray / Keane / Worrell / Curtin looks a good combo down back that doesn’t require an addition of Petty if the next 15 months goes as projected)
  4. C Daniel via trade (reeks of a crow thing to do. He’s cooked, extremely easy to tackle, slow, cannot defend in a phone box and can’t kick over a jam tin. Avoid)
  5. Zurhaar as FA (a complete flog and not a clear list need)
  6. J Berry as FA (polar opposite of the type of mid we need)
  7. B Parfitt as FA (wrong type of mid for us)
  8. J Martin via trade (injury prone and inconsistent)
  9. T English as FA (too much salary to spend on a ruck)
  10. H Barnett via trade or delisted FA (he’s just not as good as Moyle, Meek and co. List clogger)
  11. M Taberner as FA (too old, injury prone)
  12. S Sturt via trade (boring and just another Gollant. No point)
  13. J Carroll via trade (doesn’t appear to have it)
  14. H Hustwaite via trade (doesn’t appear to have it)
  15. C Nash as FA (zero skill, wrong type for us)
  16. N Haynes as FA (cooked)
  17. C Guthrie as FA (cooked and horrid list fit)
  18. G Rohan as FA (cooked)
  19. D Shiel via trade (cooked)
  20. N Kreuger via trade (terrible at football)

Ultimate pipe-dream result:

McCluggage as FA (bye Laird from the 22)

Cumming as FA (bye Smith or Chayce)

Moyle via trade (genuine pressure on ROB)

One of Guelfi, D Butler, L Fogarty, B George, E Ford via a low cost trade (bye McHenry)

More realistic / likely result from the crom we know:

Cumming as FA (bye Sholl from the 22)

C Daniel via trade (we’ll find a way for this to negatively impact both Curtin and Ryan)

Some shit ruckman out of the woodwork who is horrid and never plays a game

Draft someone who isn’t a mid but one day “could be”, whose dad kisses them on the lips

Laird starts in the centre Round 1 2025

With Rankine attending over 50% CBAs against Collingwood for the third time in his career and having a breakout game spending relatively little time forward, I think a goalscoring threat is pretty important. Enough that it should be part of the pipe dream scenario, to free up Rankine to spend more time in the middle and only go forward when it suits the team (for instance to break a tag or as a resting position).

If we miss Hayward as it seems we probably will, is there anyone else we would want? I guess Zuuhar is the obvious choice?
