If we don’t get FOS I’m of the belief Jagga is the better option than Draper now given Sid’s chronic back injury coupled with his shins this year. We actuallly don’t have a Jagga in our midfield. He is Daicos lite. Incredibly quick hand to foot, evasive and clean.

FOS
Jagga
Draper

I think Jagga is a safe option. You cannot fault this kid. But I would argue you are playing down our midfield. At our best we (as Kingy would say) brutalise teams. We have plenty of tough, ball winning and extraction ability. Having another mid that can find the ball and get it from the inside to the outside is not what I believe we really need. Jagga could potentially do it better than Cripps, Walsh, Cerra etc., but as a collective, we just dont need another accumulator IMO. I just get so excited thinking about getting a guy who is offensive minded with genuine explosiveness. You have that in all of Lalor, FOS and Draper. So despite concerns, I would take the risk on one of those three to weaponise our midfeild.

Who knows what Austin and Co is thinking. I know usually at the pointy end of drafts you go best available. Maybe they have Jagga in front on pure ability and thats the way they go? But for me, this position we find ourselves in lends itself to (finally) getting that explosive offensive run we've been looking for.

One thing is for sure... we will end up with one of these guns :thumbsu:

Are you saying the tougher opposition was in 2024?

That doesn’t make sense, the tougher opposition would have been in 2023 when he was playing against players one year older than him.

Injury interrupted, playing different position might be reasons for lower output in 2024. Also worth noting he was playing with some pretty good players in 2023 like Harley Reid and Zane Duursma which may have helped.
I'm saying when he played against the best players in his age bracket (under 18s championship), he was not a high possession player.

One thing we're kind of forgetting is North's #2 pick. Even if they end up keeping it, it's not a fait accompli that they'll definitely select Tauru. FOS would complement their young midfield nicely - and if pick 2 end up at the Tiggs, he'll likely end up there.

I'd be rapt if he ended up in the navy blue, but would be equally happy if it was Jagga. Or even Langford, who I also think will probably end up being the best out of the 2024 crop. Just not sure if he compliments our current midfield as much as FOS or Jagga. Still have these nagging doubts about Draper - no idea why, his highlights reels are as good as any - but just not convinced.

Cal Twomey's Phantom draft leading up to the ND will give us a good indicator. He's pretty much on the ball with his early selections after speaking with player agents, list managers etc.

Id be extremely surprised if they don’t take Tauru they’ve got a heap of mids and don’t need anymore the only proviso would be if LDU decides to take up free agency end of next year.Sure they’d have a inclination of what he may be doing.

Disposal, vision, ability to create.
Three things we sorely lack.
His side step ability is also excellent.
Bottom age player.
I’m certainly fine if it’s him.
In fact any of the top 5 prospects if taken at 3 are all looking like quality prospects

I am fine with any of the top 5 - even resigned to the fact that it’s better than two 10-20 picks

But even the Top 5 have Issues. If FOS strength is disposal, vision and ability to create. Then these are my concerns

1) vision, disposal, side step and ability to create - are we okay if he only gets it 10-15 times like Dow did ? Sure Dow had a propensity to dump kick, but 10-15 possession games tend to get you playing in the magoos unless it’s off a half forward flank. Smith has vision, disposal and elite side step but he does it twice as much

2) Disposal - is it elite like Langford? - cause I see a good leg and he finds open players (vision) in Coates footy but does his disposal create (puts it to advantage when our players 1v1 - like in the AFL)

I will be okay with FOS but yet to be convinced he is elite, if he has a preseason a good run with injuries and averages 15-20 disposals and continues to have 10 I50s to advantage then sign me up

My Preferences for Pick 3 - pleased we traded up to 3 - we need an elite player to add to our list:

Lalor
- 9/10 - impact player we don’t have - rare
Issue - consistency?
Elite - marking forward, goals and contested mid

Smith - 9/10 - speed & football IQ and rotating forward would be impactful
Issue - size, perhaps meters gained
Elite - ball gathering

Langford - 8.5/10 - elite kicking, football IQ, evasive, moves the ball on quickly and 191cm he can go forward and take a mark - issue is he deemed slower and too like Cripps/Hewitt
Issue - acceleration/pace
Elite - disposal to advantage

FOS - 8.5/10 - speed, disposal I50, seems to have space for disposal and
Issue - consistency, low possessions, what is he elite at?

Draper
- 8.5/10 - quality player, speed, injury concerns, disposal minor issues
Issue - back?, disposal at pace
Elite - ball gathering

Going to pick 3 and having our Recruiters have access to 1 of these 5 is worth the shot. Now they earn their stripes - the player must help our midfield compete in finals now and for the next ten years - No Pressure!

This is a helpful way of comparing the players but of course none of us have access to knowing the most important trait of all which will separate them - who is the most driven and will strive for excellence and also have resilience through their career?

It’s hard to see it but some recruiters do and hopefully ours can figure it out. And will having two of the most driven players out there on our list in our Captain and our co-VC help make pick 3 go another level? Does FOS working closely with Walsh give him an added opportunity to be the best of his draft class? Does Smith working with the best contested beast of the last decade help him be the best of his draft class?

I’m unsure about FOS

We already have a low possession highly skilled fwd in Moir, we don’t really need another one…

So Smith for me, then Draper (if his injury is ticked off)

CARLTON
Finn O’Sullivan (MID; Oakleigh Chargers)

As has been constantly mentioned, prolific ball-getter O’Sullivan just happens to be the second-cousin of Carlton star Sam Walsh. Partnering the pair is a tantalising prospect for the Blues’ recruiting unit and fanbase, particularly considering what the youngster offers. Pacy and powerful in possession, O’Sullivan brings an element of electricity not felt in the Princes Park midfield in recent years. This is not to call the Blues’ engine room a weakness, but rather to say that a genuine difference-maker might be incoming. O’Sullivan was affected by injury this year — managing just four Coates Talent League games — but he was influential when healthy, posting 17.2 disposals, 3.0 clearances and 1.2 goals per game. However, as much as the navy blue might be infatuated with the youngster that has drawn Marcus Bontempelli comparisons, there is a possibility the Oakleigh Chargers product won’t be on the board by the time Carlton is up at No. 3. In that case that he isn’t available, Jagga Smith, Harvey Langford and Sid Draper could be among the alternative considerations for Mick Agresta and Co. on November 20. The Blues will also officially welcome the Camporeale boys later in proceedings.

Moir has played what 2 quarters??
We are talking about potential aren’t we?
FOS has had an ok 2024, but based on 2023 form he’s high calibre

Moir was also highly rated until injured pre his draft into AFL

I think two different players and Moir has played 2 impressive quarters but still don’t know what his going to be, and respectfully I personally feel people have a personal bias against FOS so they are nitpicking reasons not to select him.

There’s a good chance he could go pick 1 if not top 2

Has to be one of the poorest articles on FOS going around:

  • FOS is a prolific ball getter, wtf?
  • backs it up with 17.2 disposals/ game
  • draws comparisons with Bontempelli??
