It’s interesting to see how it all played out.
Not that I think it’s a bad move but I didn’t want us to trade up to pick 3 and TBH I’d probably still prefer to have Berry or Allan plus North’s future first then Jagga.
Certainly not upset with what we have done though

I think we really wanted to rebalance our midfield. That was priority one this offseason.

As it turned out there wouldnt have been many options to do that at our original picks. Even the next tier mids like Hotton and Lindsay were gone. Mostly flankers and talls where we would have been picking.

James Barrat looks a good type at #40. Doesn’t turn 18 till the weekend, could grow a couple cms.

I really like him, has some Weddle traits

They supposedly had their future 1st on the table for every pick from StKilda at pick 8 according to afl.com.au. There were no takers till late on.

I quite like their move. They've backed themselves and their midfield to move up the ladder next year. So if they can finish 12th and the Tigers finish last (very likely) and you take out academy selections etc they will have given up 6 for Whitlock and 19 and a years development of a KPD.

It all depends on how good Whitlock becomes.

Maybe. All it takes is a few free agent compo picks and early academy or father/son players at that future 19 is suddenly looking like 25+.

So - big risk that if they don't improve significantly they've traded a top 5 pick for 25 and a somewhat ordinary KPP. I don't know what next year's draft cohort is looking like, but I'd have thought you'd find a better KPP prospect than Whitlock in the top 5 picks.

If they shopped it earlier than on the fly during the draft I struggle to believe they wouldn’t have got more for it.

It’s pick (F) 5-9 - others got more…
They got 27 & Tiges F2

* 9 & f3 for 28,40,46,54,66 & melb F1 (6-13)

Hawks 14 for Our F1,F2

Dogs 35 & 48 got them Bris 27

Looking at the above they got pantsed!
Yes they got the player but if that was a plan it sucked big time

Have to laugh that Dylan Williams and Pommy the YouTube ‘gurus’ who said we definitely wouldn’t take Jagga because we need a point of difference, were completely wrong - yet again.

Beware of content creators.
Such a personal and unnecessary attack.

Don't know who Dylan is, but Pommy is a passionate Carlton fan just like you and me...

And giving their opinion on said topic. 100% nothing wrong here.

Will be interesting to see how they fit him in. We've been playing our wings quite wide since recruiting Acres and Hollands, and I'm not sure Jagga will have the role down pat well enough to do that for us early - seems a natural ball hunter, so keeping width and working hard backward to help the defence might expose him a little until he's had a few seasons to adjust.

If he's going to get selected, I wonder if we might use him in the role we had Walsh playing a couple years back - start at half forward and then push up aggressively to add the extra number around stoppages and leave extra space in the forward line for our talls to lead into. I think Smith getting the ball 70m from goal is perfect for us early on, as he's shown he can identify and hit leading forward pretty effectively.
You've hit the problem right on the head...the leading forward!

As much as I hate *, this is so overblown (or completely misunderstood).
If they held 9, the bid would have come earlier. No way Melbourne or St Kilda let them hold that pick.
Don't know about that. SOS didn't appear to be in charge of the room..the Chairman seemed to have a grip on things. They seemed more focused on what they were doing and less interested in others. Melbourne was rebuilding the midfield, not interested in small forwards.

Yeah HB or HHF for me. Ever since we seemed slack on Houston have figured we were looking at a young talent to deliver into F50. We traditionally havent been having the extra at stoppage, but would like to see it happen.

Can see Soap's argument for wing too, as he must have a huge tank to maintain his disposal average in successively higher quality competitions. Acres and Ollie both put body on the line in those roles though, and don't want to see Jagga can-opened doing things that aren't as natural to him. At least running through stoppages he can keep his wits about him.

We'd be destroying him and our team if we play him HF. have him start in the twos and if he's good enough (he is), he'll play midfield.

What he lacks in size, he makes up for it in elusiveness and quick hands and feet. George and Crippa are there for the tough stuff too, we need a different dimension anyway.

Fathers and sons and academy players don't matter though. They wont have access to them regardless. It will still be the 19th best player available to them.

High half forward, with occasional centre bounce best spot early days for Jagga. Will cause havoc up forward - I'll back him to have more goal assists than Grian Myers

Agree with this ^

Think we’ve picked up a great complementary addition to our midfield (and half fwds)

Jagga Smith will be in there for the first centre bounce against the Tigers. Bookmark it.
Agreed. Should immediately take Kennedys midfield minutes which were not insubstantial. Would like him to play 30% of CBAs from game 1 with stints on the half forward rotating with Holland's playing about 20% CBAs

Cripps - 70%
Walsh - 70%
Hewett - 60%
Cerra - 50%
Smith - 30%
Hollands - 20%

Yeah, Nah…
Crippa, Lord, Cerra doing the bulk - Walsh, Jagga heavily rolling thru
Cinc if we are running a tag & pick your occasional cameo from anyone else wanting a crack.

Speed kills, time to step it up & change the look.
We have speed on the outside & coming from the back, I want to see it used.
Doc/Saad coming off the back move pretty bloody quick
Doc in a straight line can still move like he means it
