I question your football knowledge. Laird is a proven excellent midfielder. 20 Brownlow votes playing solely midfield in 2023 backs that up.
No question on Lairds Midfield pedigree .....even the addition of Crouch, didn't impact his first touch game

Can see Rankine off a wing but not Rachele

Repeat running isn’t his strength , being around the congestion is , same re Pedlar . Get him in the congestion
Not going to be a popular position but my preference is to run rankine and pedlar primarily through the middle and have rachele primarily as a goalkicking small forward. I just see his skillset best used in the forward half and the the other 2 best as midfielders. I would always want to maintain that A grade level small forward and Rachele can be that.

CROWS BLOWS AS STAR COPS REPEAT OF GRUESOME INJURY

Adelaide may be without veteran midfielder Rory Sloane for Round 1 after being forced to undergo another surgery for a detached retina.

The 33-year-old had the same issue in 2021 and underwent surgery on Tuesday night after experiencing symptoms at training.

He’ll return to training to be assessed next week but missed four games after surgery the last time the issue occurred, and would be racing the clock for the season opener if that timeline is repeated.

Meanwhile promising young midfielder Jake Soligo badly rolled his ankle in a marking contest on Wednesday and was helped off the training track by trainers.

The Crows are hopeful he has avoided serious injury.

Nope, you intimated he's not a natural midfielder which is so far off it's laughable. The circumstances that led him to play midfield has nought to do with you intimating he's not a natural midfielder, his clearance numbers alone put lie to that. Rory may fall short of the really top echelon of AFL mids but he sure as hell is a very good midfielder.
One of the best ‘loose ball gets’ players in comp and yes this is a contested ball stat

His consistency, clearance game and offence / defence balance is top shelf

Only just lacks a bit of X factor and better kick to be in top 4-5 mids in league

rather than winge on someone else board i will thank you guys for doing this thread instead, pedlar seems to be a popular best 23 it seems, happy to know that, cheers

(swans no such thread, north started july,i guess because they were 1-17 odd,no update for over a month)

Curtain has to play round 1.

And a few games in have midfield time.

He’s a lock barring injury and poor trial form I’d say

Even average trial form and a healthy body should see him debut round 1

Can see round 1 defence being Keane , Worrell and Curtin

With Hinge as tall support and then Michaelanny Milera ( or Nank if milera injured )

Smith prob plays defence too if milera injured and Jones / Soligo wings

Do you reckon Butts plays just being abit closer in height to Ben King?

Round 1 team that I would personally select:

B: Michalanney - Keane - Hinge
HB: Milera* - Worrell - Jones
C: Soligo - Crouch - Smith
HF: Pedlar - Walker - Keays
F: Rankine - Fogarty - Thilthorpe
R: O’Brien - Dawson - Laird
Int: Cook - Rachele - Murphy - Curtin
Sub: Nankervis
Emg (from): Butts - Burgess - Berry - Dowling - McHenry - Ryan - Hamill - Gollant

Note: If Milera is unavailable due to injury, he is replaced in the 22 by Nankervis, and Nankervis is replaced as sub by any of Berry, Dowling or McHenry

Likely Round 1 Team in reality and how it differs from mine:

1) Smith plays at half back instead of a wing

2) Nankervis is out of the 23 - replaced by Sholl, which will make everyone shake their heads in a couple of years when Sholl is out of the league and Nank is a certified gun.

3) Cook is out of the 23 - replaced by McHenry - another decision which will absolutely baffle after 2024 when McHenry is delisted.

4) Even if Sloane’s eye is hanging half way down his face they find a way to at least pick him as the sub despite him not being in the best 35 players on our list

5) Butts a big chance to play - I just don’t see how you play all 4 of Butts, Keane, Worrell and Curtin, so JB is the odd one out for me. Maybe the selectors do pick all 4 due to the mobility and flexibility of Worrell and Curtin?

B Michalanney - Butts - Worrell
HB Milera - Keane - Jones

R O'Brien - Laird - Soligo
C Curtin - Dawson - Hinge

HF Pedlar - Walker - Rachele
F Rankine - Fogarty - Thilthorpe

Nankervis Ryan Keays Murphy

Injured: Schoenberg, Murray

Smith a chance to come in for Milera if not fit.

Controversial re Smith. Hard to agree actually.

No Curtin is interesting.

But as you put it out there. GC have casboult and King up forward and having the extra heavy tall (Keane and Butts) might be a reasonable thing to do.

Curtin to debut Rd 2 at home. Drop one of Butts or Keane. Worrell as KPD #2 can match up on Jeremy Cameron better than Levi casboult.

Open question...

Can we play butts, Keane, Worrell and Curtin in the same team? Seems top heavy to me. Thoughts?

I think we need to keep in mind that Curtin is more a utility than a key defender

Forget the height , he’s more like a Dawson or Hinge than a Butts Keane or even Worrell

Curtin is on the wing. I had Smith as an inclusion if Milera is injured. If we need more height down back Hinge could swap to HB and Jones to Wing.
