Round 1 will be hot and slippery , bit like our Darwin game last year

Will we be prepared ? Wouldn’t have minded some training in those conditions , thought that be smart way to go

I think this game will be a very early indication on how our season will go.

If we're going to have a good year then this is the type of game that has to be a win

Hopefully it puts some of the winning away from home chatter/anxiety to bed early. Do you reckon GC might struggle initially with a new game-plan?

We won’t win this one, Gold Coast are going to be on a high and pumped with Hardwick in charge. There season will depend on how long that can be sustained but early they’ll go very well

So Gold Coast get the potential advantage of a warm up before we play them. Hopefully the weather on the afternoon of their game against the Tigers is a hot, humid slog.

I think it will give us a bit of advantage being able to see how Gold Coast play in rd 1. Would much prefer to play them after watching them in action than coming up against them in their first game under Hardwick.

It also means they’ve had a week to gel together.
I’d much rather play a team that’s coming off the same prep as us I reckon.

Spot on. This is a match we should win. Despite having Hardwick - Gold Coast are still a club that have never won more than 10 games in an AFL season.

For the round 1 team, the most interesting selection(s) will be how many 1st year players will get a game.

Nicks loves getting new draftees into the team rd 1:

2020 - Round 1 - Fisher McAsey
2021 - Round 1 - Rowe / Berry
2022 - Round 1 - Rachele / Soligo
2023 - Round 1 - Max

If Curtain is fit he plays, but does one of the other draftees sneak in as well?

Edwards or Ryan would have to be a chance depending on trial game form and injuries

Big call, the Sun's on their home deck in likely tropical conditions will not be easy, in fact I'll be surprised if the bookies don't have them clear favourites.... rightfully so.

Bookies have Gold Coast at 1.76 and Crows at 2.08. Points spread is Gold Coast favored by 3.5 points.

Definitely a game we should win. Our first 5 games are pretty tough - would like to start at least 3-2 and would need to beat GC to accomplish this.

It's a Gold Coast home game isn't it? I'd have them as favorites

They are favs with the bookies
FUN FACTS WITH GROTTO

5 out of 6 new head coaches at their Club in 2023 covered the line in their very first game.

Clarko, Scott, Lyon, Kingsley, Ratten.

McQualter was the only coach in 2023 that failed to do this.

And rightfully so, beat us pretty decisively up in Darwin last time in what may be similar conditions?

And the year before up there.

Dunno

If we want to play finals and even better than that win finals , we have to beat teams away who aren’t in the top echelon

The conditions are a challenge that we have to overcome as much as the opposition IMO

Gold Coast should be about 2 years ahead of us in their rebuild

Not saying they actually are, but they should be.

Their emerging midfield has about 40 games per player on ours (eg. Anderson/Rowell vs Rachele/Soligo) and the same for their forward line and defense. Older, more experienced, more players in their prime plus plenty of elite talent

At home with better coaching than previous years they should be comfortable favorites

True about their young stars but it's probably more the experience heads we have the better of - Laird, Dawson, Tex, Crouch (I know), Smith vs Miller, Swallow, Ellis, Witts

Agree re their rebuild

Then you add in 4 star academy kids from last years draft

In essence they’re prob a year or 2 behind the giants and we would have won that game last year if we had of played 20 more minutes of footy

So I’m expecting us to give it a big shake with another pre season under our belt

Concerned Re the conditions though
