Opinion 2024 Round 1 Team

Hard to predict given you'd hope we have players coming and some going which are currently unknown.

I'll presume Doedee (unavailable anyway) McAdam, and Crouch are gone.
BZT in but not best 22.
Use first pick on Darcy Wilson.

FB: Michalanney ~ Butts ~ Worrell
HB: Hinge ~ Keane ~ Milera
C: Soligo ~ Dawson ~ Jones
HF: Rachele ~ Walker ~ Keays
FF: Rankine ~ Fogarty ~ Thilthorpe
R: O'Brien ~ Laird ~ Pedlar
B: Nankervis ~ Smith ~ Dowling ~ Cook
S: Murphy

Em: Sloane, Himmelburg, Berry, McHenry, Gollant, First pick

Unavailable: Murray, Schoenberg (ACL and Achilles).

Hope we have other irons in the fire because depth looks less than this year and a few more injuries would see a bit of a disaster.

I bloody hope not. Why should he be treated differently from other squad members though? If he was a 1st or 2nd year player putting out what he produces onfield would he be getting picked?

The thing he brings is experience.

In a cruel irony, 1st year players do not have the hallowed experience.

Thus, poor Nicksy’s hands are tied. Sloane must be selected. The side must have experience.

Macadam - Fogarty - Rachele
Pedlar - Walker - Rankine
Jones - Dawson - Milera
Hinge - Keane - Smith
Worrell - Butts - Michalanney
ROB - Laird - Crouch
Thilthorpe Soligo Schoenberg Berry
Sub: Nankervis

Emerg: Dowling Gollant Cook

Noteable outs: Keays, Murphy, Sloane (not best 23)
Doedee, Murray (injured)

Accounting for injuries but not trades:

FB: Michalanney ~ Butts ~ Worrell
HB: Hinge ~ Keane ~ Milera
C: Smith ~ Dawson ~ Jones
HF: Rachele ~ Walker ~ Keays
FF: Rankine ~ Fogarty ~ Thilthorpe
R: O'Brien ~ Laird ~ Crouch
B: Nankervis (def/ mid) ~ Soligo (mid) ~ Dowling (mid/ fwd) ~ Pedlar (mid/ fwd)
S: Schoenberg

I could easily see Schoenberg to bench, Dowling to the HHF and Keays to sub depending on pre-seasons. Pedlar to start over Crouch would be a great way to start the year. Murphy (unlucky, but I'm losing zero sleep), McAdam and Sloane squeezed to depth. Yes, I know that they will actually play Sloane.

Schoenberg is injured long term.

B: Michaelanny - Keane - Worrell
HB: Milera - Butts - Hinge
C: Smith - Dawson - Jones
HF: Rachele - Thilthorpe - Keays
F: Rankine - Fogarty - Walker
1R: O'Brien - Laird - Berry

Int: Dowling - Pedlar - Soglio - Murphy
sub: McHenry

Assumption is Crouch, Doedee and McAdam leave for other opportunities and Berry works shit out in preseason. If McAdam stays, I think the way to make it work is to have Shane replace Keays as a defensive forward and just use his aggression and pace to try to force him to fit into our best 22. It's not a nice fit, but that forward line is stacked even without McAdam. I'm not assuming any trades, but if I had Adelaides wallet, I'm paying up for Parish just due to us needing another significant clearance winning midfielder and he's more dynamic than Crouch. At the moment, however, my inside midfield rotation would be Dawson and Laird 80%, Berry 60%, Rachele 40%, Soglio 40% as a rough five to build around. Pedlar won't be ready in 2024 for significant inside midfield minutes, ditto Dowling but both should be able to handle wing and forward minutes.

Beyond that, the other change is switching Thilthorpe into CHF and Tex into the third tall role. We're a year away from needing to be all-in, which means we need to transition our forward line to the structure we're going to be using in that assault in 2024. Defense and outer midfield are in a comfortable situation and so I'm going for a business as usual situation there.

Geez..

This would be bloody good to see if it did happen like that but unfortunately Keays wont be replaced by Dowling yet but it would be great to see.. and cook wont replace murphy.. even though he damn well should.

Wouldnt think Shoenberg will be right to go by R1 either in the SANFL.. he’s got a long road of recovery from a torn achillies unfortunately.

I really like your thinking though.. Progression. Improvement. Opportunity..

Mutineer what do you reckon?

Oh… and it will be interesting to see how jones goes with his foot.. wonder if he will test it in the sanfl for a couple of weeks..

Then he can put pressure on smith for his position..

Keane and Butts to battle it out and they have at least the first half of the year to audition for a spot after Murray is back. Going to be made even more interesting if Petty is acquired.

I think Curtin starts his first season playing as the seventh defender. Easier to get him into the speed of AFL footy starting behind the ball. Can always get him around the contest in games to expose him to the midfield if that’s the end goal for him (being a mid that is).

Soligo not positioned on the wing as I think he should have time in the centre square.

Is Gold Coast gonna go really tall round one because they know we are down defenders?

They also will already have a game under their belt so will have shaken off the rust.

The group is quite even so it will really depend on who has a great pre season in order to get in that Round 1 side

If Jones is fit, I'd likely look towards Smith or Nankervis to sub, however McHenry also seems to perform rather well as a sub.
