I'm even MORE confused that you can't see what you are saying. They need to get something for Houston. They only contemplated moving him on to get back into THIS years draft. If all they get for him is a F1 which they effectively send to GC for Luko, they are basically giving up Houston AND the F1 for Luko. How can you not see that?
Isn't what is being said as simple as this (3 way trade essentially). Not a great trade from ports end but they only lose Houston and get Lukosius, the F1 never would touch port in that scenario

Carlton - Houston
GC - Carlton F1
Port - Lukosius

Let's just all agree that it's not what Paer want - or what will happen in the end.

They will not let Houston walk for unders when he is in contract and in demand.

Their only issue is that they want Lukosius and have nothing really to offer. So now what?

Ken Hinkley on 24th August said:

"He has got a three-year contract with our footy club, loves our footy club," Hinkley told reporters on Friday.

"I'm really comfortable that Dan will play more games for Port."
And at the SAme time Houston said he wasn’t leaving, only to do a 180 2 weeks later. This has obviously been a smoke and mirrors process that’s gone on for a long time, and unfortunately for Port, Melbournes issues have pulled the rug out from under them. Dan wants Carlton now and Port know that they can’t keep him as they need the picks for Luko, and Carlton know this and are playing a very smart hand.

Port have gone from thinking they would have pick 5 in this draft to looking like they won’t have anything except 2 F1’s, one of which will go to GC.

I would love Adelaide to come out publicly and state that “while we totally respect Luko’s decision to nominate Port, we are willing to include our F1 if anything should change through trade week”.

This would give GC a lot of leverage and at worst force Port to give up a F1, and at best land us Luko.

Apparently, we're in for Peatling as well. Reid is really determined to end Murphy's career this off-season.

I don't hate this target mind you. Could be a high-value, low-cost aquisiton to bolster the midfield - especially if we're looking towards moving Laird out of there. Equally, you can never have enough tough and combative types in a lineup. However, it does raise eyebrows in regards to Sam Berry's extension if it goes ahead seeing it's another player who fills similar niches.
Does that mean Peatling was a late swing ie after Berry ?

I think Ports thinking is, use a F1 for Lukosius ....and get two x 1st round picks in this years Draft

Trouble is, no-one wants to give up picks in this Draft .....and the Clubs who want Houston, haven't the Draft Capital

I'm not sure even CARL's pick #11 on its own does the deal

There is no repairing the relationship with Houston now. He’s gone.
Disagree ....I can see Houston going back to Port quite easily ....he left that door open with his comments about loving the Club

Would Port not rather trade their own F1 for Lukosius? Tell Carlton to turn that F1 and whatever else into ~pick 10 so they can draft their Butters replacement a year in advance.

Bergmann has all but flagged he is leaving in 12 months and I think he will get them a 1st next year.

The reason for trading Houston was to get into this years Draft ....that deal doesn't achieve that objective, so Port won't deal on this basis
They can't get into this year's draft AND get Luko. Houston will only garner them 1x 1st rounder, and they're not offering up anyone else worth a 1st round pick. Luko shouldn't cost them a 1st round pick, but almost certainly will. One in, one out.

I think we overreacted in signing Berry, but we also have worries about our contested ball so he's someone that has a role in our squad.
I think you'll find, we signed Berry, not knowing the trade outcomes .....if we missed Cumming, we ran the risk of also losing Berry.

IF we knew our trade targets were already locked away, maybe the Berry Contract doesn't get done .....anyway, it's not good news for Schoenberg

The Berry Contract still gives us leverage next year, if he decides he wants a trade

Pretty ugly outcome for Port

The only time I can think of that happened was with Tom Papley, and Port Adelaide isn’t Sydney. Dan wants to go back to Victoria and you can be sure the AFL and the Vic media will ensure that happens.

You wouldnt know that from my brief read of the Powa board....all suggesting TWO first rounders for Houston...absolute minimum ;)

It certainly could end up that way. I was thinking before today there was likely a role for Berry in '25 in our best 22, seeing a high defensive/middling offensive output player was coming in vogue as someone to have in a midfield rotation, however, Peatling would likely strip that away from Berry without too many issues.

He does offer a bit of depth in that regard, but the other side of the coin is depth can be a double-edged sword if you're not expected to make a deep run at a flag.

I think it's quite possible, though that's just reading the tea leaves with how late this interest is. My guess is we missed out on Luko and have swung to our next undecided target. It doesn't bode well that we'll get Peatling, however, we do have a few pathways into our midfield which could sway it.

Yeah, that's not going to happen lol.

Carlton could offer up a fringe player with pick 11. Maybe another Motlop to play for Port.

Port have a history of aggressively trading out important players at peak value. I don’t think Houston’s request is a shock to Port (it may have even been invited).

Port are in an extremely good position if Houston nominates North and very iffy position if Houston nominates Carlton. Shopping Houston around (if you believe those rumours) may come back to bite them if he nominates Carlton.
