As I said, it works while we're the only club leeching. If everyone turns into leeches, that leaves nobody to leech off, and all the leeches die.

"There will always be opportunities to poach from other teams" is an assumption, predicated on other teams continuing to draft & develop them, and not doing what Adelaide does (refusing to draft/develop them, choosing only to poach from other clubs).

Are you actually trying to say that we will be in trouble when everyone stops developing rucks - because they cost too much and in many cases the results are hard to justify?

Then all of a sudden there will be no rucks left - everyone will have a bog average ruckman - therefore WE will be in trouble?

I’d guess the change is going to be that players that can only ruck are going to be extinct. Hell they already are on other AFL lists!! ROB has exposed this by dropping the thing he was good at - contested marks.

It’s the argument that Mostyn was trying to make with Grundy.

It won't be just us in trouble - every club will be in trouble, as there will be few (if any) developed but not established rucks available for poaching (i.e. the type of player which is now cheaply available).

My argument is completely unrelated to Mostyn's argument about Grundy.

We shall see, you don’t think it will take a decent contract to pry him out of Essendon and paying him enough to generate a decent compo means no trade
Probably depends more whether Draper wants to stay or not as Essendon.

Hopefully he wants to stay!

Doubt he would get round 1 compensation, but likely he will be overpaid.

If every club is in trouble then no club is in trouble

It’s all relative. If the league wide standard of rucks dropped there’s no reason to think it would disadvantage us in particular. The game would be different, that’s all.
If the rucks were that bad, may as well just play a tall midfielder type instead.

Then the Linda Blairs will just say its the right thing to do as our ruck stocks were dangerously depleted

Rucks aren't ever going to be extinct, just look at Geelong they have 4 young rucks on their books currently obviously they are thinking not only their future lead ruck but a capable back up.

Out of Toby Conway, Mitch Edwards, Jacob Molier and Joe Pike they should be well set up for the long term. Toby Conway the oldest at 21.

The end game is we must absolutely replace Strachan with a far better back up plan at the end of 2025 and at this point I'm far far from convinced McAndrew is that though at least we have the option to try before we buy right under our nose with him.

Then it's either re-sign ROB for say 2 years or try to recruit someone superior, again I'm far from convinced Sam Draper is that player if the talk of him wanting home has any truth.

That we have brought in McAndrew would suggest the club isn't going down the Toby Murray ruck development path whch is a little disappointing IMO.

Isn't that grabbing a ruck from anywhere? ;)
He’s in our SANFL team, currently not on AFL list.

What happens if Strachans injury isn’t bad enough so we can upgrade the new ruck but hes going to miss some games. Meanwhile ROB goes down for a month or his form sucks again. Who rucks? Not this bloke until we can create a vacancy with a long term injury.

I would have also thought there was a minimum requirement as to quality, he’s played 2 games, been delisted, was on his way to a SANFL side. Otherwise yeah it would be easy, I’m sure the Gaza ruck would also like a game.

That feels definitively like grabbing a ruck from anywhere.

It's a minimum chips backup - they're easy to get. We're not looking to replace ROB at this point.
What if ROB gets injured or his form sucks again? Happy to keep playing him? I would have players should be selected by meeting standards if you’re going to honour selection integrity, not because you’ve stuffed the list up.

I agree with everything you're saying here.

Ideal is a new backup who's maybe 22, and a ROB replacement who's ready to go.

We may already be into someone for next year who is coming out of contract besides sam draper who i dont want

There's the options according to Footywire

And I would suggest a goodly proportion of the better options will well and truly be off the table by the end of season unless we get real busy right now.

Or a player wants to come home such as barnett or smith who is ooc in 26

I highly doubt Smith or Barnett are ready to be the leading ruck if we are to be a contending team in 2026.

Smith has spent the greater proportion of his development playing forward chopping out in ruck at VFL level.
